ataribaby
When I played this game Ace of Aces (1986) - MobyGames and its awesome "flying thru clouds" flight graphics I was dreamed exactly about what I got 30 years later with DCS Mossie with VR. Engine controls was even "on DCS level" Mossie was awesome back then as now. Great module and experience ED! Hog_driver
I had the tape version. It was very impressive back then, there was even some kind of intro with black and white pictures. Each time I tried to use the boost, there was an engine fire shortly afterwards. I used the fire extinguisher, but with only one engine operational, it was game over anyway
ataribaby
Hehe yeah, that scramble photos I was thrilled by flying in clouds.
Hog_driver
In 1986, it was a new level of quality in 8-bit gaming. A friend of mine has the floppy disk version and oh man, was I jealous!
ataribaby
Bah that "Higher" class with floppy drivers back in 80's
Hog_driver
I saved some money to buy a floppy drive for my C-64, but eventually bought some aviation books for that money
ataribaby
C64 Floppy was actually slower than tape cos its slow serial connection, unless game used some custom turbo loader (floppy unit had actually CPU and RAM as C64). Just playing Mossie in emulator
Hog_driver
Yes, it was pretty slow. But there was no point in playing some (pirated) games in the tape version. F-14 was another good floppy disk game.
ataribaby
Yeah, for me Ace of Aces with Mossie was most atmospheric. Probably cos clouds flying. I also liked complexity back then with side views where you can play with knobs and switches.
Hog_driver
True, those side views were something completely new back then. But I think the most playable sim for the C-64 (at least the most playable one I played) was Air Combat Emulator. It was very user-friendly, had a campaign (well, sort of) and in-flight refueling to boot
ataribaby
Ahh ACE Fast Forward 30 years and I still struggle with in-flight refueling like back then. There was even computer voice in ACE as warning system right?
