3090 FE worth buying for DCS?

Recommended Posts

New DCS user here guys, glad to be here! Been playing the game four days now and absolutely love it!

I'm looking for honest opinions on whether or not a 3090 is a decent buy largely to run DCS in VR. I'm currently using a 1080 Ti but my spot has finally come in the queue to pick up a FE 3090 at MSRP. Would've much rather got a 3080 or even a 3080 Ti, but I refuse to pay more than 3090 MSRP for 3080 and 3080 Ti after-market cards. Also sucks that it seems almost inevitable there'll be a 3090Ti in just a couple months' time, but who knows when the heck I'd be able to actually get my hands on one of those at MSRP!

My Quest 2 should be arriving today as well, so I am eagerly anticipating setting the game up in VR tonight!

I've seen all sorts of contradictory info about whether a 3090 makes any appreciable difference over a 1080 Ti in DCS, which I find quite hard to believe! My 8086K runs rock solid @ 5.3GHz with a 4.7 Uncore and a -3 offset for AVX loads and I manage to run my 1080Ti at 1950 core / 6000 Mem without any issues, as well. Seeing as I want to play in VR, what do you guys reckon about making the jump to a 3090 today, given that I can get one at MSRP?

Cheers!

Hi Tocamac,

The 3080/3080ti is the way to go (Bang for buck wise)  but when do you think you will be able to get a new card @ MSRP?

If you have the card in your basket buy it. It's a no brainer!!!!1

You cannot go wrong with the extra fast Ram neither. DCS will not be a problem at all for you.

I also have a 3090 FE which I brought @ MSRP very pleased with it.

Importer told me it would be "maybe" 3-4 months for a 3080Ti FE and 6-7 months for a 3080 FE @ MSRP.

Not like I want to drop the cash on a 3090, but I've got no real option atm, with after-market cards going for well over what the 3090 FE MSRP is.

With my 1080Ti I'm currently getting around 37-42 fps at 4K with mostly high settings. I guess what I'm wondering is...will the 3090 up this fps by 50-60% in DCS. If it does, I'd be ok with getting the 3090 right away, especially given that I want to use a Quest 2 headset with the game. The last thing I'd like is to buy the card and find that my fps only went up by 5-10 or something, that would be major buyers' remorse!

Thoughts?

What sort of fps are you guys getting on your systems with your 3090s? What settings? I guess I could replicate them and see what my 1080 Ti is currently giving me, that would be the best indicator of what the upgrade might give me...

Too many variables but expect a 40-50 percent performance increase. Your CPU is great.

Yeah I delided my 8086K and liquid metal'd it the day I got it and it's a top class CPU for gaming, especially in single thread performance. Every so often I've contemplated just swapping it out for a 9900K on my existing board, but I've heard those chips run super hot even on an NH-D15 and they're soldered as well, so delidding would be a bit of a task, so I've just stuck with the '86!

For DCS, I'd say stay on the 86 until raptor lake comes out. As for 3090 fe, grab it for msrp. A 3080ti may be better bang for buck but a 3090 at msrp is too sweet a deal to pass up.

That's what I'm thinking as well, which is ironic because at launch I rolled my eyes so far when I heard what nVidia wanted for a 3090 over a 3080! xD

I got my 90fe at launch day in Russia. They were doing a flash sale at aliexpress. I tried getting a 3080 fe but failed. Sold out in seconds. The 3090fe was available for a couple of minutes more so I grabbed it instead at msrp. Who would have thought...

Yeah I signed up on nVidia's India website for both the 3090 and the 3080 on launch day. It's taken a year to get a 3090 allotment, 3080s probably won't be available at MSRP until the 4090 is very nearly out! Having said that, I'm seeing a bunch of sellers on used item sites offering so-called 3080Ti and 3090 at throw-away prices. Sounds dodgy af, not sure if these are miners dumping cards or what, but I'm not willing to chance it tbh.

For VR and at MSRP, yes, worth it. For CPU cooling I’m surprised how well my 11700K performs with Noctua CPU cooler. It is nearly as good as the 360mm liquid cooling on my 9900K setup and much quieter.

PC: 5800X3D/4090, 11700K/3090, 9900K/2080Ti.

Joystick bases: TMW, VPC WarBRD, MT50CM2, VKB GFII, FSSB R3L

Joystick grips: TM (Warthog, F/A-18C), Realsimulator (F-16SGRH, F-18CGRH), VKB (Kosmosima LH, MCG, MCG Pro), VPC MongoosT50-CM2

Throttles: TMW, Winwing Super Taurus, Logitech Throttle Quadrant, Realsimulator Throttle (soon)

VR: HTC Vive/Pro, Oculus Rift/Quest 2, Valve Index, Varjo Aero, https://forum.dcs.world/topic/300065-varjo-aero-general-guide-for-new-owners/

Yeah I prefer big air coolers to water, myself. They are quite literally silent, no headaches with potential leaks (or topping-up if it's a custom loop) and the very best ones cool as well as all but the very best custom loops.

You have a chance at getting a 3090FE at MSRP?  Heck yes!  Get it!!!  I got mine last Nov at MSRP.  I replaced my 1080SC with it.  Indeed, it's well worth it at that price.  see my sig for my rig specs.

Lads, just wanted to say a massive thank you to all who pushed me to get the 3090! It just arrived and I've plugged it straight in and done some back-to-back comparisons with my 1080Ti.

1080Ti was getting anywhere from 37-42 fps average, with a few drops as low as 28-32 (very rarely) and would go as high as 46-47 if I was high over the clouds!

3090 FE is averaging around 74-80 fps, with drops to as little as 66-67 fps and climbing to 160 fps over the clouds! I am absolutely thrilled with my early results on this thing!

It's been an expensive couple weeks...picked up a Quest 2, then an LG 48C1 (first Gsync screen I've ever used with my PC) and now the 3090FE. All I can say, though, is OMG...there is NO going back! 😃

Sweet rig! Are you running 4 sticks of RAM @ CL14? I'm thinking of upping mine from 32 to 64 but I can no longer get the RAM I have, so am gonna have to hunt around for it online! Wish me luck!

Edit: Holy shit! The VRAM runs hot on this thing! 15 mins in DCS and my memory junction temp was 102 C, GPU Core 70 C, ambient 31 C. Time to get some Gelid Ultras and fix this, I reckon! 🙈  Also I noticed that the VRAM only went up to 2,438 MHz, looks like there's plenty of headroom to push the VRAM higher once I have better thermal pads on there!

cool beans, glad you got that card!   Yes, I'm running 4 sticks of RAM

yes, the mem temps can get up there, but that VRAM runs hot regardless.  I do under volt my card.  having two profiles.  one for normal desktop usage, and my mem temps are 62-66.  my other profile is for gaming/VR, and in DCS, i've seen my mem temps hover around the upper 70's and low to mid 80's.  there are plenty of good sources for under volting out there on the net, if you're interested.

I got a 3090 at a good price (relative to what people have been paying for 3080 Ti cards!) specifically for DCS. Agree with comments that 3080 / 3080 Ti is good option but it all depends on actual prices you will be paying.

Works brilliant for 2D, but also works well for VR (Reverb G2). Recommended.

So, all good with the 3090 except...that it was making my second NVMe SSD run critically hot, because it was seated directly beneath it! That, in turn, was making DCS crash. I think. I've re-seated the second SSD to the third NVMe slot, hopefully that solves that now!

Edit: Turns out it's the Drive Temperature 2 sensor, not the main one, but it's reading 86 C and DCS crashes as soon as a mission loads up. This is even after I moved the SSD over to the third slot. Can't say I know whether this is new or it happened all along with the 1080 Ti and I just never noticed, or indeed whether this sensor reading can be relied on. What IS new is the crashing. That never happened before this evening! Ideas?
