Upgrading to 3440x1440 34" monitor - can my gpu handle it?

Recommended Posts

Is there any point to upgrade to a 3440x1440 from a 2560x1080 monitor? I am currently using the i7 9700k and gtx 1080Ti. In most cases I have a stable 60fps and 80-85% gpu usage.

Does it make sense to upgrade the resolution if i have to lover the details to keep 60fps?

My current settings:

You won't run that resolution on those settings on a 1080ti. I couldn't on my old 2080ti, not down below about 5000ft ish. It will do more like 45-50 FPS rather than 60+ FPS.

However at that resolution and the anti aliasing turned down IE ssaa off and visibility range to high. You might be ok. My previous 2080ti could at that resolution.

When I was running my AW3420DW 34" Ultrawide on my other rig i7-9700K not overclocked and a 2080Super @ 120hz it ran just fine. I got out of the FPS number thing months ago and I think the 1080ti is a better gpu then the 2080Super. I also tested the monitor @ 85hz and saw no difference in performance between 120hz. The monitor has its own tweaks too so I dont think your gonna have any issues but if your more worried about a few fps numbers then thats gonna be an issue on your part. The 34" monitor and dcs is amazing.

I dont think the OP is talking about the GPU running the monitor at 60, 85 or 120HZ. Correct me if I am wrong but the OP's asking if his 1080ti can drive that resolution on those DCS settings at 60fps in the game itself. If thats the case it wont manage that resolution with MSAAx2 with SSAAx1.5 and Visibility on Ultra. If my 6800xt and previous 2080ti couldn't a 1080ti cant. Thats 4'953'600 pixels vs 2'764'800, thats a 45% increase. If the 1080ti is already running at 80-85% load it wont take that increase in resolution without turning some settings down to compensate.

I didnt want the OP to be mis informed and spend money on the wrong thing.

A friend lent me a Xiaomi Mi 34 ''. Your prediction is correct. The GPU is struggling with my settings. Utilization at 99% all the time. F / A-18 free flight Caucasus mission 50-57fps, Spitfire The Channel free flight 40-50fps... When I turn off MSAA and SSAA the game just doesn't look good enough, regardless of resolution. I think the new monitor will wait for some better times. Thank you for your reply!

No worries mate, I hit the same wall buying a 4k TV to use for a monitor. I went all in and ended up with my system I have now. It was that or change my knackered banger out on the drive, LOL! I'll enjoy DCS and keep my spanners handy for another year or two.

SSAA is a massive killer as are shadows. So if you get chance to borrow it again have a play trying to get MSAAx2 with some SSAO working. I find it a nice balance. However for some reason when DCS is over a standard 1440p resolution the step up required is a big one and need some proper GPU power. Maybe that will change when the core engine gets updated, I dont know.

Just didnt want you to go and spend your money to go "oh no 99% usage I need a new GPU" not in todays climate.

I've got a 40" 4K here, and a 2k, and a 144Hz 1080p.

On the 4K I found I didn't even need to turn on any anti aliasing because the pixel density was so high. To cut a long story short I use the 1080p despite having two higher res displays, and the horsepower to drive them. I prefer all the effects turned on and the high framerate vs an actual higher resolution. It feels like DCS is pretty happy at 1080p.

Hello Burt, Can you instruct me how can I connect 2 difference GPU ( I have 1070Ti and 2080Ti ) one the 2080Ti to my HP reverb G2 VR headset and  the 2nd 1070Ti to my screen, I tried many times to do it, but couldn't success;  If I got the screen that connected to the 1070Ti live but the VR headset that connected to 2080Ti got black (nothing could see). the only possibility to got mirror images on the screen and the VR was when the both connected to the same GPU.

Please help , inform me if I need to tune or do something else in setting  of windows or bios or.....

Thank you in advance

Actually, a GPU running at 99-100% is what you paid for and is the desired state of the card when gaming while NEITHER bottlenecked somewhere else NOR fps-capped by the user.

A GPU running in the 80s% and not fps capped is a clear sign of a big bottleneck, usually CPU in terms of DCS.

Those cards are ment to be run at 100% by design.

The fps is limited with RivaTuner to 60. I forgot to write it in the first post. I tried to play with unlocked FPS and 100% GPU utilization, but anything below or above 60 fps is causing me problems with TrackIR.

I have a 1080ti and ultrawide 3440x1440 for 2d with a 6700k cpu. I set it pretty much ultra across the board (minor tweaking for specific things, like shadows to low, etc, which yield little visual difference but hit performance). Typical fps was 45-70 depending on what was happening.

Aye, 100% GPU is fine. High levels of CPU usage are more concerning.

Thing about DCS is that even beast GPUs are really marginal.

No, I wouldn't expect good performance from a 1080 Ti while running 3440 x 1440.  It's decent for 2560 x 1440, but not 3440.

If you're going to go with a higher resolution than 2560 x 1440, you'll need a much heftier graphics card, maybe an RTX 3080 or better--IF you can find one, much less afford it 🤑

I average 80-90 FPS in single player and 50-70 in multiplayer. 3080Ti with 3440x1440p display. My settings are almost the same as yours, I have shadows and heat blur to low, water high, SSLR on, clouds ultra.

RTX 3080 Ti is an absolute monster. If that doesn't do it, nothing will.

I tested my mates EVGA Ftw 3080ti in my own system with DCS. It is a beast and knocks my 6800xt out the park regarding DCS.

However with a quick undervolt and a 60fps cap. It didn't use much more electric or get too hot either. It ran about 65 degrees c overall. It only used a lot of juice if you ran it with no cap at 99%.

The luxury was having the headroom to run 4k resolution and still fly very low without FPS drops.
