Need PSU Help (Please HELP!)

Recommended Posts

After nearly a year, I am buying an RTX3080.  I am wondering if I need a new PSU

I built my PC about a year ago.

Ryzen 3800X

32GB Ram

RTX3060TI

2 TB SSD

A few powered USB's cards for peripherals.

I am currently running an EVGA Bronze 750W PSU.  I have never had issue with it.  Do I need to upgrade?  Thanks for your time.  I look forward to playing 4K and in the distant future VR (I did play VR with my 3060ti, it just wasnt powerful enough)

Please help.

Your processor can draw about 100W, plus the Mainboard, drives, RAM, etc, the consumption can reach about 200W, for example:

https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/amd-ryzen-7-3800x-review,7.html

However, the RTX3080 can draw close to 400W:

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ti-founders-edition/34.html

Here is what a reviewer had to say about your power supply:

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/evga-750-b3-power-supply,5229-11.html

So, while it seems that a 750W unit should be able to handle the load, you may want to replace the PSU with a better quality one.

Take a Seasonic Prime TX 850w Platinum.  One of the best you can get.

If you plan on buying one of those rumoured 4xxx Nvidia's going 500+ Watts you may want tzo consider the 1kW version of this PSU.

Good luck.

Edit: here is someone getting a 3080TI.  Same question.

I've got a Corsair TX850m 850w PSU. I run a AMD 5600x in a X570 system. I run a 6800xt daily. But I have tested my mates 3080 and then his 3080ti. All ran fine with my PSU running DCS @4k. Checking with a watt meter power draw was 540-560 watts on a heavy low level mission over Dubai. Also in "river run" using F-18. That was using his EVGA 3080ti FTW.

If I limited it to 60fps though power draw was under 380-480watts for the system.

I would also like to point out that buying a quality PSU is really important. I could have probably used a 650-700w psu for these tests. However not long term and I definitely would not have used a bronze efficiency. Its common sense that higher quality components go into higher efficiency psu's. These components cause less noise and interference. Also always check the amps on the rails, especially for the GPU you intent to use. The wattage a psu is capable of delivering is important. However I always try to check the amps a CPU or GPU might require and check that the rails have a sufficient supply.

Another thing check who really makes the PSU. In my experience when I am buying one I usually check out Corsair, Seasonic and also Super Flower, then I try to find a detailed review of that model.

Let me put it in other words:

If you ru(i)n a 1-3k€/$ GPU on a cheap PSU it's your own fault. Running such expensive HW on a 80,-€ Bronze PSU is a crime, but hey...the victim is also the murderer.

I have seen dozens of blown PSU's over the years, about 50% of them kill the whole PC when they blow up.

There is only a handful of companies that build PSUs.

Corsair, beQuiet, NZXT, Tagan, Antec, Chieftec, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, Phanteks and many many more DO NOT BUILD THEIR PSU's !!

They order them to their specs from that dozen of companies that actually build Power Supplies. Among them for example: Seasonic, SuperFlower, Flextronics, Delta, and maybe 5-10 others in total.

The difference between a Bronze "Brand XYZ" and a Seasonic PSU for example is that Seasonic has their PSUs 20% overpowered, so a 1kW PSU will hold 1200w for quite some time before it fails. Many others that claim to be 1kW or whatever fail at 75-80% of their rated output. Unfortunately, Hard-OCP's website is offline, that site had the best PSU reviews over a decade. Those reviews told me a lot and explained many issues I came across with low-quality-to-mediocore PSU's when they were pushed hard.

I run this "Corsair" AXi-1200 which is actually built by Flextronics, the recent years all my builds I did used Seasonic Platinum PSU's with very few exceptions and I have no issues with them in machines doing 24/7 for years as a Server. Very robust & reliable. I would not by my AXi-1200 again but get a Seasonic Prime 850-1kW range.
