New NVIDIA Drivers?

I have been seeing things on YouTube for the past week or two about some new setting in Nvidias newest driver that is supposed to make a significant difference in fps in games.  Not sure if it applies to VR.  I guess it has to be enabled in settings.  Has anyone tried this in VR yet?

OK I watched the video he is referring to NIS, you have to run a lower rez and then NIS scales it up a bit. I tried those things in the past I never liked going to lower rez then scaling it up..

I can confirm it's supported (and seems to work) on the 1080ti, but NIS doesn't seem to work with VR unless the SDK is built into the game.

This is "competitor" to NIS which I use with very good results

The currrent release is here https://github.com/fholger/openvr_fsr/releases and supports NIS as well.

So, the FSR only works with SteamVR, I suppose I can use it with standalone version, would it be better than latest Meta (ex-Oculus) native?

It can be done but I am afraid i need to mess around with the SteamVR settings all over again to see the difference, if at all. It would take some time away from practicing hovering.

so the net net; for a given resolution NIS or FIS will significantly reduce GPU frame time at a small cost of visual acuity, generally a better performance than a similar reduction in Steam % and better visual quality with NIS/FIS for a point for point reduction in steam. your shout

so the strategy is to set the SS value as high to a point just before the fps becomes unacceptable, right?

depend on how you test, but thats a valid way to approach it.

I tend to do my initial tests in a simple environment and get as much performance headroom as i can; and get an acceptable (to me) look

for me that means 100% with NIS at .8 and shaders

I''ll be damned.

I always think adding SteamVR on top of the native Oculus layer would cause trouble in FPS. I use the modified openvr_api.dll to DCS. With all settings unchanged when switching between native and SteamVR -- including the headset frequency and resolution, nVidia driver setting, DCS VR and System settings. Just have SteamVR SS and DCS per-game SS both are at 100%

If I have to trust both fpsVR and in-game fps are correct, SteamVR with this OpenVR driver has at least 10% better in frame rate. It is very apparent when I fly a nothing-happen mission over downtown Beirut.

Further questions: should I lower the DCS per-game SS to 80%? Or should I lower the SteamVR SS instead? Would it help if I turn off sharpening using FIS/NIS cause Oculus Link has done a great job??

If your original SteamVR per-app resolution was 3000x3000 per eye for example, if you set FSR/NIS to 0.8, then the game is rendering at 2400x2400 per eye.  Then it is upsampled to 3000x3000 by FSR/NIS algorithm.  It is this upsampling algorithm that's supposed to be "smart" and better than just blowing up the image and therefore giving you better performance with little quality loss.

But there will be quality loss nonetheless.  So I recommend compensating for it by increasing the SteamVR final resolution.  In this example, 3000/0.8=3750 would be your upper limit.  And it's about finding balance between performance and quality.

There will be no benefit from decreasing SteamVR resolution.  If you're gonna decrease, decrease the FSR/NIS renderscale.  Not SteamVR.  I personally use much more aggressive setting at 0.67 renderscale.  And then increase SteamVR resolution higher.

I would also disable its built in sharpening.  And use reshade sharpening instead.

I just tried this with the latest (497.09) drivers. I do not get the "NIS" on screen when DCS is running. This is testing in 2D mode with a monitor.

Either it doesn't work with DCS or it doesn't like my hardware (2080 super). Has anyone got this to actually activate with DCS?

You might wanna ask in different section.  This is VR section and don't want to get it mixed up.

Can I ask how you enabled it? I have the same card and just installed the latest Nvidia driver. I don't see any new option in the settings. Thanks!

@FupDuck The setting is called Image Scaling in Nvidia 3D settings. I followed the video at the beginning of this thread and that setting is available on the 1080ti with latest drivers.

I get the latest nVidia driver installed but DCS OB cannot start in either VR nor 2D mode. May be due to OpenVR FSR. Having a clean and repair to see if it can be fixed.

Nevermind... I dunno, there are new settings in the control panel now I am not sure if I need the FSR anymore.

Just for general community info........

I've just installed the new Nvidia driver 511.23.  I've not tried it under VR conditions or played with any new features yet but in normal 2d it's a 0.6FPS drop (80.2 to 79.6) which is okay by me.  I haven't noticed any onerous or concerning differences e.g. stuttering, flickering, etc.

Test conditions were a simple mission created for a Hornet at 1,000ft on approach to Senaki using FRAPS for benchmarking.  Logging started at the exact some point in the terrain for each run and an average of 3 runs before and after install of the drivers.  Previous driver was 497.29.

PC is i7 11700 + 3070 + 32gb 3200hz ram
