INFO

Thank you for your interest in my first helo campaign 'Paradise Lost'. I’ve always been fascinated by helicopter pilots who flew in the Vietnam War, and I have read many personal accounts. I’m blown away by the courage and airmanship it took to complete their wide variety of missions. Therefore, I’ve always wanted to make a great Vietnam-era Huey campaign. The problem is, as I’m typing this, we do not have a Vietnam map. I considered using the Caucasus and call it Vietnam, but we already have many campaigns using that one. However, the new Marianas map just got released and it’s beautiful, it’s got palm trees…but it’s an island. So instead of pretending that Guam is Vietnam, I came up with a background story to create a fictional conflict in the late 60s that resembles the Vietnam War I hope you’ll understand why I had to make this compromise, and you’ll enjoy the atmosphere of the missions. I made sure that it’s Vietnam-like down to the smallest details.

In the first 6 missions you’ll fly slicks, that is, a Huey that’s used for cargo and troop transportation. Then, you will be transferred to B Company of the 4th Aviation Battalion, and you’ll fly gunships equipped with miniguns and rockets. Each task in this campaign is based on real life missions flown by UH-1s, I did not come up with any of it. Well, except for one, but I don’t want to give out spoilers.

CAMPAIGN TIPS

- Always, ALWAYS check your kneeboard cards and make sure you're tuned to the right radio frequency. Voice overs are tied to frequencies and if you don't hear them, the missions will be no fun and impossible to complete

- F10 map icons are turned off. It's time to challenge your navigational skills. Guam is a small island, it shouldn't be too hard to find stuff by dead reckoning. Use the F10 map and look for red circle markers, then look at the surroundings for visual clues and try to find them in relation to those. Like 'a few miles SE of the airport' or 'just South of a golf course' etc...

- Most ground stations like Company HQ, FSBs and the Hospital can also be found using FM homing.

- Sometimes you'll fly from the left seat, sometimes from the right. You'll be switched there by the mission, it's on purpose. The campaign will explain why.

- Do not change the ROE of the door gunners, it will be handled automatically by the mission

- You may change the ROE of the copilot though to make him fire the miniguns.

- AI helos can take a long time to land at LZs. I wish they didn't but that's what we've got. Be patient.

- You don't need to use the built-in ATC comms. Ever. You can if you want to, but you don't have to.

MUSIC

Although you can listen to some copyright-free 60s-like music by tuning in to the Armed Forces Radio in-game, the best was to play the campaign is to play this Spotify playlist in the background:

If you have any questions or feedback, please let me know. Just like all my other campaigns I'm planning to keep improving this one to make the gameplay smoother and the user experience more fun.

I've played thru and enjoyed both existing DLC UH-1 campaigns as well as the stock one, yet this looks most promising. The photo showing prop plane spraying "agent orange" from what it looks like and with UH-1 gunship covering, good historical reference.👍 Hopefully there are AI F-5Es doing CAS as well, just for immersion?

Now the only major thing lacking would be OH-6 scouts, for some proper hunter-killer pink team missions.😆

From the description it seems a portion of the campaign involves flying from the left seat. Has it been made possible for AI right seat pilot to actually fly the helo (not just straight and level or circling) and shoot rockets, and player (co-pilot) controlling the minigun and radio? That was how Vietnam era UH-1 gunship worked, and would be awesome if DCS engine allows mission creation this way.

Hi

on mission1, as I approach the HQ it asked me to push the space bar for comms, nothing happens?  I am sure I have tuned the radio and even turned it on!  Almost certainly human error, but not sure what that could be?

Thanks

Hi Reflected, if it doesn't ruin the missions any is there anyway to get the knee boards seperate like in the Pdf docs? Or at least the radio freqs? Would make it a little easier to reference.  4 missions in so far and loving it! The ai have done a few bizarre things bit not enough to detract from the feeling of it.

You have knocked it out of the park already!

Thank you! The pdf-s are available under mods/campaigns/paradise lost/doc. I haven't included the freq chart, but it's a good idea, so I will include a separate pdf for those.

Where did you land in Mission 1? ive got nothing but tall trees all around the blue smoke.

I think there was a landing spot right at the source of the smoke with a bunch of guys waiting to be picked up.

I read that in Vietnam, pilots would sometimes chop trees with their rotor blades and create their own LZs. Pretty sure DCS doesn't allow that, but landing in that tight spot certainly felt like I must be chopping trees... 😄

Hello all,

I can not install this campaign. Get again and again
the following error message.

DCS updater 2.12.0.97
Unknown Module
REFLECTED_SIMULATIONS_UH-1H_PARADISE_LOST_Campaign.

I have the same problem with the campaign DCS: A-10C IRON FLAG Part I.

As far as I know this problem has never occurred and I have already installed many campaigns.

Does anyone know what the problem could be ?

Thanks in advance !

Hello Reflected,

thank you very much for the quick feedback. Yes, I know this
reference to the "Open Beta", but I can't find it anywhere here (see picture). Too bad, then I just wait until a "stable" update allows the function. As far as I can remember, an installation hint only appears if the correct version is available, strange ? I had already installed an "Open Beta" version, but had to delete it again for space reasons.

Thanks a lot !

Ref the Armed forces radio in game, could I go in and swap out the free music, for a Armed forces Vietnam playlist I already own?    It has the proper music and armed forces Vietnam adverts and radio programs, all set up and sounds amazing when flying the Huey.

Would it be possible to drop this into the music folder of the campaign on my system, or would it mess up the campaign?

i would prefer selecting the music via the radio in game rather than use an external program like Spotify.

Oh, good point! The E-Shop doesn't mention the required DCS version at all (same for the A-10C II Iron Flag campaign that was released on the same day as Paradise Lost).

@NineLine @BIGNEWY can you ask the team to update the E-Shop page to include a reference to the required DCS version for the 2 new campaigns? I think it's probably DCS 2.7.9 that's required.

Hopefully the Stable will be updated soon.

In the meantime, for anyone interested, you can always switch between Stable and OpenBeta using the command line (in Steam it should be possible via the right click menu, but I'm not sure if this campaign is already available via Steam).

if you export your music into an ogg file named 60s_Radio.ogg, then open the mission file with zip and replace the 60s_Radio.ogg file with yours (similarly named) then yes...I think...try and let me know.

Cheers for getting back to me, once I get back home next week, I’ll give it a try and post my results here.

@BIGNEWY on a second attempt I notice I cannot purchase any campaign from e-shop. Every one has the "Requires another product" even for those I have modules purchased and installed.
Stupid question, (I know...), and I'm sure I'm wrong. But double check you're actually logged into the e-shop. From time to time it logs me out. .
Just happened again, and as soon as I logged in I could purchase.
