INPUT please... How does this build look?

Recommended Posts

Hey all - My PC finally died and I have a chance to pick up a pre-build listed below...

I am historically an INTEL/ NVIDIA user and this build is on the AMD/RADEON family.  I don't know much in this area.

How does this look:

  • CPU: AMD RYZEN 7 5800X 8-Core 16-Thread 3.80 GHz (4.70 GHz Max Boost)
  • GPU: Radeon RX 6800 16GB
  • Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) ATX Motherboard
  • RAM: G.Skill TridentZ RGB 32GB DDR4 3200MHz (2x16GB)
  • SSD: 1TB Gigabyte AORUS Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD
  • CPU Cooler: EVGA CLC 280MM AIO RGB
  • PSU: 750W 80 Plus Gold
  • Case: ASUS TUF Gaming GT501 Mid-Tower

Aside from the PSU looking a bit low how do the other parameters look for DCS/potential for some VR play?

Thanks

As you said, PSU could use +100w and a Platinum label.

I would also consider purchasing 64GB right away. 3200-3600.

Skip the RGB "Trident bling" and get the non-RGB 64GB kit Gskill RipJaw 3200-14-14-14-34@1.35v instead. They run at 3600 with 1.4v without any trouble.

found this ... thinking of biting on it.  It keeps my CPU with AMD and has a 3080 Ti in there.

Again i think the PSU is a bit low and I worry about the fire hazard of those failing 850s i read about.

Anything triggering red flags here?  I'll upgrade the RAM later to 64 and gift the GSkill to my son.

  • CPU: AMD RYZEN 9 5900X 3.70 GHz (4.80 GHz Max Boost), 12-Core 24-Thread
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12GB (Brand may vary)
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS Master ATX Motherboard (WIFI)
  • RAM: G.Skill TridentZ RGB 32GB DDR4 3200MHz (2x16GB)
  • SSD: 1TB Gigabyte AORUS Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD
  • CPU Cooler: 240MM RGB AIO Liquid Cooling
  • PSU: 850W 80 Plus Gold
  • Case: Rosewill SPECTRA D100 ATX Mid Tower With Tempered Glass Case
  • WiFi: Yes
  • Bluetooth: Yes
  • VR Ready: Yes
  • Peripherals: Gaming Keyboard and Mouse (EVGA Z15 RGB Gaming Keyboard and EVGA X17 Gaming Mouse)
  • Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (free upgrade to Windows 11 upon release)
  • Dimension: 18.50" x 8.27" x 17.32"
  • *The Windows 11 upgrade will be delivered to qualifying devices late 2021 into 2022. Timing varies by device. Certain features require additional hardware (see aka.ms/windows11-spec)

Thanks

With the RTX3080Ti, then better make sure it has at least a very good ≥ 850W PSU (Platinum, preferentially).

Then it's a great system! More so if you're already planning to get 64GB of RAM later.
Also, and regardless of PSU, consider undervolting your GPU on the new system, it'll consume less, run cooler, and last longer (important, considering their price these days...).

There have been some issues with transient spikes with some PSUs, but the fire hazards you may have heard can be related to user error.
One should never, ever, run these power hungry RTX3080/3080Ti/3090 GPUs with a single PCI cable (splitted) from the PSU, it really needs a separate/dedicated PCIe cable from the PSU feeding it, for each slot in the GPU, always.
I think most RTX3080Ti models will have three slots for power. If it's a top quality ≥ 850W PSU that hasn't three separate PCIe cables, just two, I think you may daisy chain 2 connectors of the same PCIe cable, and have a second cable for the third connector (see image below).

I have tested a 3080ti on my own Corsair TX850m. It worked perfectly fine however that was in my X570 system fitted with an undervolted 5600x. If you are worried about the PSU just upgrade it as it is not worth the headache if there is a problem. 850w is enough just make sure its a proper quality unit that gets fitted.

Then like Lucshep says make sure its wired up correctly.

Hey, there is something to it and I dont want to scare you but there is more than 1 version of this particular Gigabyte Aorus X570 Master around. There is Vers 1; 1.1 afaik and there is Version "2". Only the "2" Version is said to be error free and it was THE reason why I run the X570S and not the X570 without the S as I didnt want another problem board.

- Some say that the board will never kick into PCIe Gen4 mode ( may need to Goggle if that is still the case )

- Some report USB bugs

- General Issues with RAM ( new layout on Vers2 has a different RAM-VRM layout, visible at first sight )

Others say it's a rock solid board, no complains and it is sold many many times with good reviews.

If, then I would really only buy Version 2 of that board, or get the X570S like I did.

Sorry to crash the dream

P.S. The X570S I run is the best "new rig" experience I personally had in over a decade. Very reliable and solid board, not a single glitch since October.

LucShep,

have you seen der8auer's video where he cuts 1 wire after the other on a 2080ti Strix to see how many wires you actually need ??  SCARY !!  haha

German

English

I second what you say, better feed it with 2 separate cables straight from the PSU...and have a good PSU to protect your investment.

Look what he uses....Seasonic Platinum

LOL 😬  ...I was cringing the whole time!
der8auer is one fella that is worth subscribing to, also "Actually Hardcore Overclocking" channel has two good videos on that subject.

Yep. 🙂 Better just accept that one extra cost on the PSU, and pay a little attention when connecting things (as recommended by manufacturers).
It's just not worth risking thousands of dollars/euros/pounds of one's precious PC system (crazy prices these days on GPUs!) and the whole drama involved.

  • 2 weeks later...

The 80 plus rating is mostly for efficiency which is good and all, but it is not a badge of quality.

It has just been for a very long time, an overlap between decent parts and the various 80+ ratings. Platinum over gold has no additional requirements, just a slightly tighter waste power curve.

In fact it's just three simple measurements.

at 20, 50, and 100%

And the difference between a gold and a platinum is 3%, 2%, and 2% respectively, that is all the difference between the two badges.

And often the platinum comes at such a significant price increase, you could be looking at a 1000w gold, instead of an 850 platinum.

I think noone will disagree with this.

The thing is, if we have to put a safe (as in minimum recommended) PSU wattage for an RTX 3080/3080Ti/3090, that will be 850W.

There are excelent 850W 80+Gold PSUs, sure, but there are plenty more 850W "80+ Gold" label with questionable quality, manufacturing and provenience.
The "80+ Platinum" label is guarantee of quality, as only the most reputable manufacturers produce them, with the very best components.

The user in OT is looking at pre-builds. Pre-builds even with such high-end graphics often include PSUs of questionable quality. This is why preference for "80+ Platinum" label came up to the discussion.

The #1 trouble maker in a standard PC is the PSU.

Talk to guys who fix PC's for many many years and they tell you exactly this.

I wouldn't mind running a Gold Label PSU ..IF..they would give me 10-12yeras warranty...and also deliver the same quality of DC current for my components but they usually do not.

Yeah I agree with all of the above there. Basically you want to get a PSU purchase correct, your system relies on that. Regardless of whether its gold or platinum, check a reputable review first. If its good then buy it, I dont think the brand or efficiency rating is any guarantee of a quality unit to be honest.

An internet search and a little reading up can go a long way to save you a headache later on down the line...
