Communications issues with certain aircraft/airbase combinations

Depending on aircraft and airbase combinations, the ATC comms appear to be broken. I have the tower frequencies set correctly in the ME according to airbase frequency listed under the airbase info in the ME, and set to correct coalitions. Track attached with Allied aircraft scattered across Manston, Hawkinge, High Halden, and Biggin Hill, ATC set to Channel B. Axis aircraft at Merville, ATC set to Channel I. Track attached showing broken/odd combinations. All others operate okay.

Biggin Hill + Spitfire = all comms options blacked out, no response from ATC

Mosquito + Manston = all comms options blacked out, but there is response from ATC (so why blacked out?)

P-47D-40 + High Halden = all comms options blacked out, no response from ATC

K-4 + Merville = all comms options blacked out, menu response from ATC, but no audible response from ATC

A-8 + Merville = all comms options blacked out, no response from ATC

Spitfires at Manston and Hawkinge work fine. P-47D-30 and -30Early at High Halden work fine. P-51D at High Halden works fine.

I converted your track to a missions, then checked for starters Biggin Hill, I did not see any frequencies matching that of Biggin Hill on your Spitfires.

When I set the Spitfire like this, I get a response from the Tower:

Switching to channel B for tower comms, then switching to A for comms with wingman. (I used an AI in this instance just for testing purposes)

Before testing I double checked all airfield frequencies and the aircraft ME frequencies and they did match at the time, as mentioned in the first post. Did the Channel map get any updates between February and now? That would be the only explanation for the frequencies matching in February and not matching now. I specifically set B to tower, so it's odd both A and B are 124 along with the main flight freq.

I also tested again and the P-47D-40 at High Halden still does not get a response from tower on Channel B, with 118.1 set as the B freq.

Re: Channel updates. Looks like there were some comms fixes done, according to Flappie. At least on Manston. Still the issue remaining at High Halden. Perhaps better for me to open separate bug reports for specific airfields?

It is certainly possible something changed, I can look at the rest of your mission this week. If you have the actual mission file that would be best.

Ideally one report per bug is best, but this is some gray lines so I am ok working through it here and see if there are some bugs.

I will check the P-47 next, maybe tonight. I will report back.

Here's the mission. It's been updated and some fixes added. The Allied fighters are resolved--more on that at the bottom.

The Axis fighters still have trouble, though:

K-4 slots, Channel I at Merville gets the comms dialogue response but no audible response.

A-8 slots, Channel I at Merville get no response at all. This is strange because they work fine at Merville in Reflected's Horrido campaign, if I recall correctly.

D-9 slots not tested as I don't own that module.

On the Allied fighters I found something peculiar. When increasing the number of aircraft in the flight sometimes the freqs are copied over and sometimes they aren't. Compounding the issue further, the in-game slot selection does not always list aircraft in ascending order #1-4. Some of them end up listed in descending order, namely the P47D-40 and the Biggin Hill Spits that I was having trouble with: I thought I had selected the lead (which I was sure had the correct freq) when I was actually selecting the #2 slot, which had a buggered freq. The P-51D slots have the same sorting issue but the freqs apparently copied over fine.

So for the K-4's I did the same thing, I changed channel 2 to the second frequency on the airbase list and it worked as expected. 118.3.

For the 190s, I could use the first frequency, which in this case was 38.7 (even thought the second one worked, but shouldnt as its out of range for the FuG 16ZY, but that might be because of workarounds for modern maps). I had to set the Communications-Homing switch to Abst. as well.  (I need to check as well, I thought Abst. was for Homing not comms)

Based on our manual alone, I think some tweaks need to be done BUT you can get it to work as I suggest here.

In our manual, I is supposed to be for comms within flight or squadron, so this one should be like allies and change the radio frequency when set under channels.

II is supposed to be for several flights and squadrons, appears to me it is being used as above.

III (or triangle) is for air traffic control or base (this would probably work correctly now if you set it to the above 38.7 for Merville, but I didnt try.

IV (or square) should be for larger scale country wide comms/defense/raids network.

I need to confirm all that, but again, for now, it should work as I have below. Channel 1 or 3 as ATC, channel 2 for flight comms.

image.png

EDIT: thinking a little more, this is probably correct.

So for the Channel map, for Luftwaffe, you want to set Channel 1 as a custom channel for your group of fighters. So for your 4 fighters to talk.

For Channel 2, this would be the channel for Larger group comms, so if you have multiple groups that need to communicate, this needs to be set the same between all of them. So say you have 4 groups of 4 aircraft, you would want this to be set the same among them all.

Channel 3 would be your tower. So you would set this, for the Channel to the first number in the list. In the case of Merville: 38.700

Channel 4 you could use for whatever, if you wanted a channel for all Luftwaffe aircraft, or maybe a secondary field, GCI, etc.

Another side note, on Allied, I was stuck in the old ways of the Caucasus Map, you can use the first frequency number in the list, for example with Biggin Hill, setting channel 2 to  38.6 allows contact with the tower.

I have to find a document I have somewhere that describes what each channel was used for with Allied aircraft.

I see. That's a bit weird. Do the individual channels have their own frequency ranges? In most of the radios I've used in DCS the radio itself has the range limitation but any channel could be tuned to anything within that range without discrepancy between each channel.

No the channels are all the same range (although I don't think they are historically accurate due to limitations in other maps), and 3 of the 4 channels you can do what you want with honestly, but one channel autofill's the radio frequency here:

image.png

So if you put 38.5 in channel two, it fills in that info. I was only giving the historical usage if that is your thing, but as long as you use that channel as your main comms, you should be ok. Set tower comms on another channel.
