RTX 3050 8GB

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

Getting back in to DCS after a long time and considering a new GPU - RTX 3050 8GB (this is within my budget ) will also be using it with X-plane,   due to the weird pricing the 3060 is not within reach as 3060 was the one i wanted , but the price on the Nvidia Site (India) and the dealers is a 40% difference , so just wondering anyone here does have a similar GPU and can give me some pointers to the performance that I would get.

Plan on purchasing this today if I have some feedback from anyone here using this GPU.

My current rig :

Ryzen 5 1600x

16GB DDR4

RX 550 2GB.

Regards.

It'll be a pretty big jump in performance (good upgrade) from your current AMD RX 550 2GB, that's for sure.

Performance wise, the RTX3050 8GB is +/- equivalent to the GTX1070 8GB and GTX1660 Super 6GB, but with the added modern features of Nvidia RTX (DLSS and RT, which DCS does not use).

ED lists the GTX1070 8GB as minimum recommended for DCS World, so it means the RTX3050 will do the job fine at 1080P, though you may need to compromise some settings ("medium" settings as starting point is a good idea).

If you can, look for a used RTX2060 Super 8GB or GTX1080 8GB (on Ebay, etc), as they perform a little better, and probably less expensive (being used).
Of course, being used, the warranty will be dubious.

Hi @LucShep

Thanks for the info, have been searching for used Nvidia / Amd cards , but even the used one's have ridiculous pricing,.

So thought that it's better to get a brand new card and the 3050 kinda fits right in the budget.

I was considering the GTX 1650 but the 3050 looks way more attractive.

Can do with some settings not set.

Thanks.

It'll be a really good performance increase.

I have a 3080 arriving this coming Friday and I will probably be posting my MSI 2060 Gaming Z on sale here in a couple weeks to offset a little bit what I did to my poor wallet.  Incredible what has happened to the price of these things.

Curious...what are about to spend on this 3050?  With the performance being almost up there with a 2060 but having more VRAM I don't know if I would buy a used 2060 over a new 3050.

Definitely get a graphics-card with at least 8GB of video-ram.
Avoid the 6GB and 4GB models.

@Buschwick

Purchased the RTX 3050 8GB today ,  It's a Galax make , started DCS and joined Caucasus  aerobatics online (kept everything to MAX , don't understand the SSLR / SSAO and the other SSxx something so not sure what to use )  also no DOF and Motion Blur ,   now when I entered the lobby selected the Mig 21 and clicked on "Fly" Dcs just quit on me , so then I went reloaded and went back to Caucasus aerobatics online and selected the L-39 , managed to get in the pit but after a few seconds DCS quit again , then reloaded DCS and went back to Aerobatics online Nevada , took the Mig21 and no crash , it was super smooth .   I couldn't read the fps as I am using a 32 inch TV hence the text wasn't clear , it's probably somewhere between 60-80 fps but can't say.

I use X-plane a lot but since many months had not done any simming because I was tired of the low fps due to the AMD RX 550 2GB GPU. But now XP is giving 50-60 fps maxed out.

I could have opted for the 3060 12GB but the price difference is almost 45% higher than it should be.

But overall I am happy. I can do some tests later if you want and tell you exactly the performance that I am getting.

Maybe once the gpu prices drop to normal I will think of something higher.

BTW the resolution I am using is 1920 x 1080

Congrats. 🙂 That must feel so much better now.

In regards to DCS settings, some are really demanding, so much that they're better left at off.
Maybe this (2nd post of thread) can help you set a baseline, for you to experiment with your own settings:

I think I am seeing 90 fps in Caucasus in multiplayer with around 10 users.

But DCS just quits.

Also installed the Simplex Shader Mod.

That is odd.

Only things that occur to me right now are:

  • Graphics Card can't hold full boost clock (then quits game). ...btw, what Power Supply are you using?
Try limiting the framerate to 60 FPS, as follows:
Create a setup file autoexec.cfg in the folder “C:\Users\*YOUR USER NAME*\Saved Games\DCS\Config\” and write this line there:  options.graphics.maxfps = 60
  • Could be hitting RAM+pagefile limit and DCS running out of memory.
Try to increase pagefile size to 32GB (32768 both in min and max), for example: https://mcci.com/support/guides/how-to-change-the-windows-pagefile-size/)

  • Possible corrupt DCS installation (missing files, etc).
Follow the "Clean and Repair" section in this article: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/support/faq/repair/

I followed your advice and 60 fps in the autoexec. now in DCS i am seeing only max of 35-40 fps ? is that fine ?

Also about the pagefile , realized my C drive is a 120GB SSD and the space left is only 24 GB , do have a 2TB HDD where all the sims are installed.

So what I did was set 32GB on the D drive , for now there is not exit of DCS but there is heavy stuttering , especially when using F2 to watch some aircraft

That is a signal that you're using Vertical Sync ON in the game options.
It provides the smoothest experience (if game is always locked and persistently at 60FPS) and zero tearing on screen, but unfortunately it has a big downside - whenever it goes below 60FPS, it nearly halves your framerate.

Either place Vertical Sync OFF, or reduce graphical settings.

Pagefile on a mechanical HDD is not the best idea, as that is too slow.
But since you don't have an SSD with enough space for it, as you did with the HDD will have to do for now.

Better start considering the purchase of a bigger SSD (recommend 1TB or bigger).

Meamwhile I am curious....

Remember this suggestion in a previous post of mine:

Quote

Create a setup file autoexec.cfg in the folder “C:\Users\*YOUR USER NAME*\Saved Games\DCS\Config\” and write this line there:  options.graphics.maxfps = 60

...try increasing that value just a little, for example to "65" (instead of "60")
See if somehow it helps?

@LucShep

Set it to 65 I am seeing fps at 50-64 on the Caucasus map on Multiplayer.

The terrain load time is a little too high but I guess that's ok. It was the same even before setting up the autoexec and the pagefile.

Just wanted to know , does everyone get stutters also when changing views using F2 ? or is it just me ?

Yes, it's more or less severe (or not at all) depending if on SinglePlayer or Multiplayer, on the module, if DCS is installed on SSD or HDD, and of course on the PC hardware specs.

Feel free to look around the Performance Bugs section of the forums, perhaps voice your concerns in there too: https://forums.eagle.ru/forum/483-game-performance-bugs/

This seems to be a RAM issue. At 32GB I would have stuttering while cycling F2 through the different players throughout the map. When I upgraded to 64GB this stutter is gone. In multiplayer with 10+ players I'm usually using 41+GB of RAM.

I acquired an RTX 3050 a few months back because the reviews said it was a fantastic video card. And my hardware isn't old; it should be able to handle anything, but it didn't. As soon as I installed it, the computer began to malfunction, and it shut down.

What is your current PSU rated at? It could be that your PSU does not out put the needed power. A quick search found that an RTX 3050 needs at a minimum 550W PSU.
