What is the point in power on missile which needs power supply to work later on, after take off, or just prior of use? Why not power it on when still on the ground? What are the advatnages/disadvantages? Does it overheat or something if it`s powered on for too long? And if so, what`s that max time it can be under voltage load?

This is an example, why having this kind of option:

  • Solution

Because electro/optical sensors like the Maverick for example, needs to be cooled

So if you power them on at startup, the missiles seekerhead gets to hot after a while and can damage the seekerhead, rendering the missile useless

The Maverick does not have limited battery power. It's plugged into the airplane until launch. The battery is only for the time of flight.

You are correct on this. Its because of cooling issues for the seekerhead.

The limited battery part, comes into play when the maverick is shot over (too long) longer ranges
