Upgrade time - please have your say

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

It's time for an upgrade, or perhaps it's not?

Here's my build that I have had for a couple of years:

Gigabyte Aorus x570 Pro wifi

32Gb DDR4 3600Mhz RAM

Ryzen 3700x

Gigabyte 2080 Super

Various SSD

Gigabyte Aorus 48" FO48V

What would you upgrade of the above?

Cheers!

E.

To be frank, that system seems still current to me, gains won't be worth the cost of upgrades, IMO.
That 48'' FO48V is an OLED, I think, which I believe can reduce resolution while maintaining crystal clear image, a bit like CRT used to (OLED different tech than LED, seems able to run lower resolution than "native" without looking fuzzy). So that will aleviate any bottlenecks caused by GPU if 4K is a bit too much for it.

With that said, if the itch to upgrade that system was too big and was able to spend, I'd look to upgrade these parts:

- CPU: Ryzen 5000 series, like an R7 5800X or R9 5900X, or wait for the upcoming Ryzen 5800X3D
- RAM: get 64GB instead of 32GB ("B-die" 4x16GB, 3600 CL14, or 3600 CL16, or 3200 CL14)
- GPU: Nvidia RTX 3080 12GB or AMD RX6800XT 16GB

Maybe a nice and pretty ventilated case as well, if you're tired of looking at the one you're using. 😛

If this is your current Hardware then you shouldn't have too much perfomance issues. Considering the Hardware Pricing atm I would say it is not time for an upgrade. You could easily wait a bit an see if there will be a bigger performance leap that justifies the amount of money to spend.

Yeah, one could always wait and see. But atm I would guess that you could gain a few percent of performance. But you would have to spend a lot of money for just a few percent. So my thought is: it is not worth it, so it is not time to upgrade any of this hardware.

If the prices wouldn't be so ridiculous, you could think about the graphics card. But as the prices are sky high and there are new versions very likely to come up this year... just wait for it and see if its worth it.

I only fool around the F-14 - and still having a hard time on it as there is so much to learn and so little time and talent. But I love it.

The only thing I'd consider upgrading is the graphics card, since you game on a 4K TV/monitor.

But, the GPU prices are still high compared to their MSRP, even though they are slowly dropping down. Given how the new generation of GPUs is planned to be released in like 6 months by both AMD and Nvidia, I'd wait for those for sure.

i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg.

DISCLAIMER: My posts are still absolutely useless. Just finding excuses not to learn the F-14 (HB's Swansong?).

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

Wonderful! You guys rock!

I have been thinking about a new graphic card, upgrading to the 3080 as there is an end of year sale at the moment here in New Zealand. But not sure how much of a performance gain a would see in all honesty.

I agree with the others, thats a pretty solid system there. For me having tighter timed Dram helped a bit all around on my system. Something like G.Skill 3200/C14, quite a few used kits around now DDR5 is available. However with that TV as a monitor, something like a 3080 or above would be good. AMD as good as they are now cant handle 4k resolution as well as Nvidia. I know I had a 6800xt.

You could always go the whole hog and go for Intels latest with DDR5, I dont think you need to at all though.

Unless you have a pool full of Dollar notes I would not buy a complete new system, the gains as said above are not worth it.

If you really need more power, upgrade the GPU and throw in a 5000 series Ryzen and sell your old parts.

Thanks 🙂

I have decided to wait it out in the end. The GPU would give me a few more FPS but I would need to spend $1800 NZD for it. It's not like I get bad FPSes now, it's just more of a itch I had!

I had the luck to buy a 3080 for only a few bucks above the MSRP back in the days (10/2020) - so this was not cheap, but kinda okay. But I wouldn't throw more money on it because it has its limits. I have the 10 GB VRAM Version which is obviously limited but also the 12 GB Version wouldn't give you much headroom over it.

If you keep this in minde, on itches like that a good scratch will do it.
