Crash to Desktop

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, seemingly out of no where I'm getting a crash to desktop when in external view at altitude in multiplayer. 3 of the crashes to desktop I have gotten no error message. One time it crashed and blue screened "Unexpected store exception".

So far I've performed a slow DCS repair, deleted fxo and metashaders2 folder which have not fixed the problem. Attached is a copy of the latest dcs.log.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Log is showing problems:

  1. Nvidia GPU drivers referenced in the crash log, you should uninstall them, download and run DDU cleaner and reload the fresh drivers.
  2. Lua code errors, maybe related to MODS (FRENCHPACK V4.8), suggest uninstalling all MODS if fresh load of GPU drivers doesn't resolve issue.

Uninstalled driver and ran DDU cleaner, installed fresh and new Nvidia driver 512.15. Crashed on me again. Uninstalled FRENCHPACK V4.8 mod, stress test lasted 1 hour 3 minutes and finally crashed to desktop again.dcs.20220328-212648.crashdcs.logdcs.20220328-212648.dmp

ETA: not exactly a "stress" test, just ran the game in multiplayer in external view.

You should check your RAM. Try re-seating it in its slot(s), then run a memory test (MemTest or Windows Memory diagnostic).

And if none of the above works, try disabling XMP.

No dice, this time crash happened while in single player mission. Screen went black/froze and computer restarted.

Another crash to desktop, it seems very consistent timewise, about an hour before it crashes. Temps look fine though.dcs.logdcs.20220329-134122.dmpdcs.20220329-134122.crash

So putting a 60FPS frame cap seems to have solved the issue. Thinking its either the PSU or GPU.

Please try this:

  1. Empty "C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\DCS.openbeta"
  2. Empty "C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\metashaders2"
  3. Empty "C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\fxo"
  4. And most importantly, empty "C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\NV_Cache" (Windows might refuse to delete some files unrelated to DCS - just hit "Ignore")

EDIT: ah, some progress at last. 😀

Well thought I'd post an update, this problem still plagues me and its not a DCS issue. I'm having CDT in all games and i cannot figure what the problem is. I've even swapped GPU's with someone else to rule that out, problem remains. If any of you have any idea's I'd def appreciate it!

Have you tried the NVIDIA control panel Debug mode yet? Open the NVIDIA control panel > Help > Debug mode.

You can also click the "Restore default settings" link on the main page.

CONCLUSION: If anyone is still following this, I finally found out what my issue was. My RAM was getting too hot causing the XMP OC to become unstable. Every Time RAM temps reached >59C I would run into a CTD. With XMP disabled, memory would still run hot reaching 60C while gaming, but it will only crash at those temps when XMP is enabled. Now the question is, why is my RAM running so hot!

Thanks for your feedback. 👍

Check if another piece of hardware is in contact with your RAM (CPU radiator, MOBO radiator, or GPU for instance).

Issue was the two top 140mm AIO fans doubling as exhaust fans were set too slow. CPU didn't need them fast but RAM definitely does especial with the 3080Ti dumping all that heat into the case. Ended up connecting them to my manual fan controller. When gaming I just jack them all the way up.

memory can be very temperamental. have you tried memory with heat sink? but yeah airflow is important too.

Yeah it's the G-Skill Trident Z so it has heat spreaders

this will prove if GFX OC is making game crash.
