Moreover if the pylons will be canted outward like by SH, this has to produce huge frontal RCS, apart the huge drag penalty.

SH Pylons were Canted for Launch Clearance of the Inboard Hardpoints, and the Mid/Outboards had to be canted to match.

For the ASH, If I remember the last proposed details was to have a Default loadout of:

-Base F-18 Block III/IV Airframe (Likely be assigned J/K)

-Conformal Fuel Tanks

-Pylons 1 and 11 Will Have AIM-9X III Only

-Pylons 2 and 10 Will Carry Various AIM (AIM-7,9,120) and AGM-88, GBU 12/38, SDB

-Pylons 3 and 9 Will Carry Pylon2/10 Stores + NGJ, AGM-65 + Various GBUs, JSOW, EWP

-Pylons 4 and 8 Will be Disabled

-Pylons 5 and 7 Will Carry AIM-7/120/ATFLIR

-Pylon 6 Will Cary EWP

A lot of sensor elements previously requiring PODS will be moved internally (ie IRST)

Now, Other Than Removing the Need for External Fuel Tanks Completely w/ the CFT's you Remove the Drag from them and their Pylons.

The Inboard Stations will remain Wired, however they likely wont be used as much if at all due to EWP being able to carry more weapons than before + Weight Restrictions

(ie You Could Mount 2 EWP w/ 4 AIM120s in Each to Each Wing + another AIM120 and AIM9X) But You'd likely be overweight by that point, and who needs 24 AIM120s.

Also, The Thing that's not really a dominate "feature" of Block IV+ that rarely gets mentioned are the new Pylons.

The LAU-127 Pylons are a Newer Revision and smaller/Angled compared to the E/F and C/D Pylons.

The SUU-80/SUU-79 Pylons are also being replaced w/ Newer Ones, Smaller, and Shaped to Angle Radar Waves Away.

That will Attach at a offset to eliminate the canted Pylon Drag.

So the Ideal General Loadout is:

Tips: LAU-127x/x Revision + AIM-9X III

Outboard: SUU-80x/x Revision + AIM7/9/120

MidBoard: SUU-79x/x Revision + EWP

Inboard: Not Used (But Wired for SUU-79x/x Revision, Possibly Used for Non Jettisonable Stores (ie NGJ)

Fuselage: AIM-7/120/ATFLIR

CenterLine: EWP

The EWP can Carry Anything from 4 AIM-120s Each, to Various Arrangements of SDBs and GBUs

And Has Reduced RCS and Drag Compared to Exposed BRU Attachments and Adapters.

There's Also Replacements coming to replace the ATFLIR w/ a Smaller Integrated Solution.

Good summary. It would be interesting to know if there is an appreciable loss of Clmax due to the CFTs, but I doubt it would be admitted if there was. Skate, has anyone ever told you that your random capitalization makes them dizzy? :D

i dont know where i picked that habit up from... lol.

CFTs only affect on drag/performance is transonic drag, which is negated by the EPE's.

No big deal. I guess that makes sense, they're pretty far aft of the LEX. Just that increase of frontal area. (As if the Super Hornet needs more transonic drag!)

I do not miss those days where you soaking and still have to inspect the aircraft (BPO/PRE) refuel and put it to bed.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

I'm glad I didn't go but it's really cold here so I'm not sure what's worse. Cold or wet. Unless it's cold and wet and then I'm glad I stayed back.

Anyone else have the feeling that this push and pull between boeings SH and the F35 is actually a good thing to drive down costs for both fighters?

Know and use all the capabilities in your airplane. If you don't, sooner or later, some guy who does use them all will kick your ass.

No. It's smoke and mirrors. I expect LM will make an affected cost reduction only... one that they were prepared for all along. POTUS will look good for having made such a "big league" deal. Yuuuge savings.

I think you are probably spot on. The shareholder anger over their loss of wealth may be a bigger deal.

What is with the red plastic pistol on the F-35 pilot getting his pocket stuffed?

Yeah Canada's gonna be buying a 40 some odd fleet for interim while they decide what's gonna be their next fighter. I like the F35. Just not made for Canada's needs

Funny thing is...

I hear nothing but good things from Active Duty Military on the F-35.

The only Negativity is coming from the Press and people that blindly swallow everything they report.

I guess it depends on the type of aircraft people are expecting. The press is mostly concerned purely with air superiority capability, which is not what the F-35 was designed first and foremost to achieve - and yet it seems pretty good at it so far thanks to its sensors.

But that having been said the whole project could've been handled much better, and I feel also tailored differently. These "too big to fail" projects of the US military industrial complex are not particularly healthy for the state economy.

In short the aircraft might be good, but the price to develop and procure it certainly has been way to high, so the question now stands wether it will be worth its final price tag.

Many people said the same thing about the F-15, until the F-22 came out. Then, many said it about the F-22 until the F-35. I see a trend.

Exactly. The press is just being sensationalist. They love to throw out big numbers and interview people like Pierre Sprey (who is an idiot) in order to throw out clickbait headlines. But when you actually look at the numbers, the price is starting to beat out the 4.5 Eurocannards, the pilots adore it, and it just when 15:1 in Red Flag 17-1, and its primary role isn't even air to air.

Yeah an upward-spiralling one :P
