The Russian Mil Series!

A few teaser pics.....

Almost ready to post the first!

We will start with 1.

 Work our way up!

The Mil Mi-1 (USAF/DoD reporting name "Type 32", NATO reporting name "Hare" was a Soviet three- or four-seat light utility helicopter. It was the first Soviet helicopter to enter serial production. It is powered by one 575 hp (429 kW) Ivchenko AI-26V radial. It entered service in 1950 and was first seen on the 1951 Soviet Aviation Day, Tushino and was produced for 16 years. More than 1,000 were built in the USSR and 1,594 in Poland, as SM-1.

Designed to be used as an agricultural aircraft, air ambulance, passenger transport, air mail, freight transport helicopter as well as a armed escort/scout.

It also includes a  Prototype of an armed variant, tested from 1961, with four 3M11 Falanga (AT-2) or six 9M14 Malyutka (AT-3) anti-tank missiles.

I have included all the assets needed to fulfill these roles, Mountable in the ME.

Next,

The Mil Mi-2 Hoplite

The Mil Mi-2 (NATO reporting name Hoplite) is a small, lightly armed turbine-powered transport helicopter that could also provide close air support when armed with 57 mm rockets and a 23 mm cannon.

The Mil-built prototype first flew in the Soviet Union on 22 September 1961, after the initial development the project was transferred to Poland in 1964. The first Świdnik-built example flew on 4 November 1965 (making this the only Soviet-designed helicopter to be built solely outside the Soviet Union). PZL-Świdnik produced a total of 5,497 helicopters, about a third for military users. The factory also developed fiberglass rotor blades, and developed the wide-body Mi-2M seating 10 passengers instead of eight. Most typical role-change kits include four stretchers for air ambulance usage, or aerospraying or cropdusting applications.

In Poland, several specialized military variants were also developed for support or reconnaissance roles, with 23 mm autocannon, machine guns and/or two 57 mm rocket pods, four 9K11 Malyutka anti-tank missiles or Strela-2 AA missiles.
Operational history

The Mi-2 was first introduced into the Soviet Air Force in 1965. The Mi-2 is used by mainly former Soviet and Eastern Bloc countries, although it was also purchased by Mexico and Myanmar armed forces.

Most of the armed Mi-2 variants were used by Poland. Some were also used by the former East Germany (with machine gun and unguided rocket armament only).

North Korea still maintains a large active fleet of Mi-2s.

The Mil Mi-4 Hound

The Mi-4 was designed in response to the American H-19 Chickasaw and the deployment of U.S. helicopters during the Korean War. While the Mi-4 superficially resembles the H-19 Chickasaw, it is a larger helicopter and is able to lift more weight. The first model entered service in 1952, and replaced the Mi-1. The helicopter was first displayed to the outside world in 1952 at the Soviet Aviation Day in Tushino Airfield.

The Mi-4 transport helicopter laid the beginning of the Soviet Army Aviation, it was widely used both in the armed forces and in the national economy and for several decades remained the main type of helicopter in the inventory of the Soviet Armed Forces and of the Civil Air Fleet. The Mi-4 went out of service with the development of the Mi-8. It is not used by the Russian Air Force anymore, though it remained in service in some countries as a utility helicopter or as a military transport a while longer. Albania was thought to be the final country using the helicopter and by 2005 all were out of service. The Mi-4 played a very important role in Bangladesh liberation war of 1971. The Mi-4 was the workhorse of the Indian Air Force[4] covering the medium lift role at the time. A highly successful heli-borne operation, the Meghna Heli Bridge, using Mi-4s helped the Indian Army's 57 Mountain Division clear the Meghna River. The helilift of a battalion of Indian troops to the outskirts of Sylhet was the first heli-borne operation of the Indian army.

Much like the UH-1 Huey, after it was gradually phased out of military service, it was used in various domestic roles: search and rescue, firefighting, polar expeditioning, construction site cargo helicopter, commercial flights and many others.

The Mil Mi-6 (NATO reporting name Hook)

The Mi-6 was by far the world's largest helicopter when it was designed in 1954–56; with a maximum load capacity of 12,000 kg.[1] It was also the world's fastest helicopter; with a top speed of 300 km/h (190 mph). In its early days, the Mi-6 set many world records, including one for sheer circuit speed at 340 km/h (211 mph). As of 2013, the Mi-6 still holds the FAI record of fastest 5-tonne lift over 1,000 km, in which it flew 284 km/h in 1962

From 1959 to 1972 at least 500 units were built for various general-transport, utility, firefighting and flying-crane duties, the last two sub-types not being fitted with the large fixed wings, which in other versions bear part of the lift in cruising flight and thus enable higher speeds to be attained. The twin nose wheels and large low-pressure main wheels do not retract

Normally flown by a crew of five or more, the Mi-6 seats 65 armed troops and can alternatively carry 41 stretcher (litter) patients and two attendants, or a wide range of bulky loads, including vehicles, loaded through rear clamshell doors. In exercises, fleets of these aircraft have airlifted many kinds of weapons, including FROG-7 rockets on their PT-76 tracked chassis, as well as large radars and heavy artillery. All Soviet armoured personnel carriers, armoured cars and light mechanised infantry combat vehicles can be carried

Mil Mi-10

The operational service of the Mi-10 was of moderate success, being distributed mainly to units of the VVS (Voyenno-Vozdushnyye Sily - Soviet Air Force) which already operated the Mi-6. Operations with no load were found to be unstable, and the best procedure for take-off was found to be a rolling take-off, which usually also resulted in nose-wheel shimmy when lightly loaded. The main mission of the early Mi-10 virtually evaporated with the improvements in contemporary ballistic missiles; thus the majority of the long-legged variants were converted to Mi-10PP, (or mi-10P), airborne Electronic Counter-Measures helicopters, carrying a large ST-900 Step' (Step' - Steppe) ECM pod under the fuselage mounted on a pallet.

Other Mi-10 long legged aircraft were converted to carry out a wide variety of missions but usually only as single prototypes. Of special note was the Mi-10R (R - recordnyy- record) record breaking helicopter, converted from a production machine, with the undercarriage of a Mi-6 fitted with fairings and spats, as well as a tail bumper to reduce the risk of damage to the rear fuselage on landing.

Mil V-12

The Mil V-12 (NATO reporting name: Homer), given the project number Izdeliye 65 ("Item 65"), is the largest helicopter ever built. The designation "Mi-12" would have been the name for the production helicopter and was not applied to the V-12 prototypes.

The prototype V-12s outperformed their design specifications, setting numerous world records which still stand today, and brought its designers numerous awards such as the prestigious Sikorsky Prize awarded by the American Helicopter Society for outstanding achievements in helicopter technology. The V-12 design was patented in the United States, United Kingdom, and other countries.[3]
Side view illustration

Despite all of these achievements the Soviet Air Force refused to accept the helicopter for state acceptance trials for many reasons, the main one being that the V-12's most important intended mission no longer existed, i.e. the rapid deployment of heavy strategic ballistic missiles. This also led to a reduction in Antonov An-22 production.

In May–June 1971, the first prototype V-12 SSSR-21142 made a series of flights over Europe culminating in an appearance at the 29th Paris Air Show at Le Bourget wearing exhibit code H-833.
V-12 No.1 at the Mil Helicopter Plant in Panki. Note that the rotor blades are removed.

All development on the V-12 was stopped in 1974. The first prototype remained at the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant in Panki-Tomilino, Lyuberetsky District near Moscow and is still there today (7 March 2017) at 55°40′2″N 37°55′56″E.[6][7] The second prototype was donated to Central Air Force Museum 50 km (31 mi) east of Moscow for public display.
World records

Records are certified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. The V-12 first prototype has held eight world records, four of which are still current, in the FAI E1 General class for rotorcraft powered by turbine engines.

Mil Mi-14

The Mil Mi-14 (Russian: Миль Ми-14, NATO reporting name: Haze) is a Soviet shore-based nuclear-capable amphibious anti-submarine helicopter derived from the earlier Mi-8.

Formal development of an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) version of the Mil Mi-8 transport helicopter was authorized by the Soviet Communist Party Central Committee and Council of Ministers in April 1965, with the objective of replacing the Mil Mi-4 in the short-range, shore based anti-submarine role. The new helicopter was required to have an endurance of 2 hours on station at a radius of 222 kilometers (120 nmi; 138 mi) from base.

@Hawkeye60 hasn't replied to me yet, but I had cause earlier today to fix some problems with the Mi-1 and Mi-14, which got me thinking about the issues I had with the Mi-6.

Long story short: I've fixed the Mi-6 to work with the latest OpenBeta. Replace 2x files using the 2x .lua files attached to this post.

The Weapons_mi6.lua is completely commented out which allows DCS to not crash on launch.

mi6.lua has been changed pretty considerably to match the Mi-6's performance numbers instead of the Mi-24 which served as the base that @Hawkeye60 copied from. Where definitions for parameters aren't available, I stole numbers from the Mi-26. All data open source using only a few minutes of Google-fu.

I've also attached 1x .miz file so you can see it "work" without having to set up your own.

Known issues/miscellany:

  • Lights are stupid. I didn't invest any time to try to fix those -- someone else can have a shot. I also couldn't find any reference video/material to see if it had lights and what color and where on the fuselage.
  • The geometric origin of the 3D model is way wrong. I cannot fix that since I don't have the source 3D model. Consequently, the pitch axis in particular is screwy. If you're able to fix it, more power to you.
  • I corrected a lot of the geometric metadata for things like main rotor, tail rotor, etc. This model doesn't fishtail much/at all compared to what I started with. That means it can taxi to the runway for takeoff without wrecking itself or anything nearby. Unfortunately, and I think because of the geometric origin issues, it cannot land on a runway (it just orbits forever).
  • Vertical takeoff is mostly okay. Vertical landing is better but still not perfect. Given the above point, I recommend this be used in VTOL mode only unless you use something like MOOSE to clean it up out of the sky at the destination.
  • I disabled the weaponry to get it to not crash DCS on launch. You can still mount payloads in the mission editor, but I suspect they won't actually do anything in mission. I only intend to use with this MOOSE RAT, but you may think this is an issue for your application.
  • The nose door and aft clamshell door open and close during flight. I think this is because the 3D model is animated using magic/special/reserved animation enumerations (I think they're tied to cyclic pitch and roll), so I couldn't find a way to stop them from moving during flight. If you know how, please share with the community.

Please do not ask me for help debugging your setup. These work for me so I'm sharing with the community.

Why thanks!

@HawaiianRyan for this work!

I have been very busy.

I do plan on fixing and/or up-dating the mods/models as time permits.

The patches have played havoc with a lot of my mods and keeping up is a chore!

One patch and all hell breaks loose!😄

I know I can get some weapons to work.

ASAP.

Any chance for at least a fix on the geometric origin problem?

Maybe I can fix the rest, but not having the source 3D file puts me out for fixing the geometric origin.

Sorry for the delay.

Try this edm.

Drop into the shapes folder and allow overwrite.

I set the dimensions per this site.

While in max, I also fixed the rotor animation.

It was wrong.

Let me know of any issues.

Thanks for this effort.

The geometric origin is still way forward, almost at the tip of the nose.

Can you shift it to be more near the center of gravity? It doesn't have to be exact, but somewhere "in the middle" of the helicopter, maybe under the main rotor (in length & span dimensions) would be considerably better than what we have now.

Speaking of rotor direction, it is spinning backwards. Actually, it only spins backwards at low RPMs; once the main rotor gets somewhere in the 30%-40% RPM range, it abruptly switches direction to the "correct" direction of rotation.

Will do.

I was sure the rotors was spinning correctly.

Back ina bit.

Also: one of the rotor blades is noticeably longer than the other four.

Actually, three of them are so long they'd chop off the tail.

One of the blades is also not angled correctly (they should all be roughly uniformly spaced throughout 360 degrees, i.e., 72 degree spacing).
