AMD 5800X3D, the new King for flight simulators?

Hey, no worries, will keep an eye on OCUK. Anyway, it is rather said that 5800x3D was out in less than half a year and then it is "outdated".

From one gen to the next is usually a modest improvement in the first place. It's not like you're missing lazer sharks or something. You are missing a modest performance increase (possibly, not always a certainty either) and premium prices.

I'm on the fence too. Currently using a 3900X on an X370 board. I'm tempted to step up to AM5 for all the platform improvements, but the investment will be significant.

My other option is to drop in a 5800X3D and milk it another year.

After reading the Tom's Hardware review, I'm leaning towards grabbing a 5800X3D. Check out the MSFS benchmarks: 5800X3D is still outperforming even the 7950X in MSFS (and actually most games), but by a huge margin in MSFS. I think MSFS is about the closest they have to DCS.

How much change did you see in DCS with the bump up to 5800X3D?  I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to spend the extra 500 and get a 7700X.

I saw a good increase, though I didn't put in the effort to benchmark DCS. I bought it knowing that it's the last CPU that my current build can accommodate. If I were to upgrade now, I'd really consider a 7k series as you will have upgrade paths in coming years.

Modules: Wright Flyer, Spruce Goose, Voyager 1

I went from 3600 with a solid 4.3 all core overclock to the 5800x3D and instantly saw uplifts of 25-30% in free flight missions, CPU heavy scenarios are night and day different.

Not a single tech internet presence doing benchmark using DCS World is a felony!

Significant change.

I had started to frequent the Enigma server and often encountered enough stutters to make it unenjoyable and downright unplayable sometimes. Now with the 5800X3d it's like night and day with little to no stuttering at all.

For me it was well worth the money, and for my purposes (which is almost exclusively DCS) it looks like I'll be able to avoid the big Zen 4 upgrade until the 8000 series at the earliest.

As I wrote above, I am very satisfied with my 5600X to 5800X3D upgrade.

What we need is a stable trackfile using only free parts of DCS that tests both GPU and CPU. This can be used by anybody to compare systems.

Then create one. Take a SU-25 around the Marianas, make sure that it has clouds and some weather effects, make sure you use some kind of imaging device (like FLIR or TV - I guess for the SU-25 it will be TV), because that impacts the fps heavily, et voila - there is your benchmark.

Make the Track 90-120 sec. long and give it some distinct cues when to start and end the recording.

You can use Afterburner/RivaTNT for recording the Min/Max/Ang/1%/.1% fps.

Need to try this, and Beirut may also be a good choice, as long as the TRK file plays correctly and consistently in the first place!

For Syria with the F-16 I have a Benchmark Track here:

It lacks Video-feed though, but for a basic performance and settings comparison it'll do.

Humm, to make free maps busy enough takes a lot of work. Do we need the user to have the map in order to play the TRK file?

Yes, the track files are not a actual recording, but a log of movements and inputs. When playing a track file, DCS recreates the simulation with this logged parameters. So in a nutshell, you need the map and the aircraft in order to use a trackfile.

So, we can only use Su-25T

Or TF-51.

But honestly. If your doing a benchmark track, you‘ll be doing mostly for yourself. From my experience the interest in thoroughly benchmarking DCS is limited to some enthusiasts.

5800X3D seem to be selling out across the board… I wonder if they’re clearing stock for good, or if they’ll keep this one alive and are just selling out from people who waited for AM5 reviews.

I’m not in a position to buy yet, so if I miss my window, I guess c’est la vie.

Oh I'm not saying they aren't available, but the sites I've been monitoring (Amazon, Newegg, local computer store) are all quickly dwindling in stock over the last few days.

I guess a lot of people have realised that it still pulls it's weight even against the top end 7xxx CPUs so make sense to upgrade only the CPU on their AM4 system rather than splash out on all new.

Will probably change when the 7x3D come out.

As long as the stock lasts till Cyber Monday, it will be fine. It may not beat 79xx, but iirc, it sure maintains a little lead against the 77xx. Fingers crossed,

If I were AMD, I would have stopped producing any AM4 months ago.

There was a leaked roadmap that suggested they were going to keep selling am4 as low tier products for a while. Same leak also said am5 x3d was tba, but running along side.

Concur, and it makes sense. Since AM5 mobos and DDR5 are so expensive, AM4 still provides a lower cost option with DDR4. Intel’s latest support both DDR4 and DDR5, AM5 is DDR5 only.
