I think I am going to run pretty close to stock for now guys. I am using the stock CPU fan that comes with the Corei7 retail at the moment.

I used to build gaming machines every few years. This is my first one since 2002!!! I did a TON of research on every component to make sure that I had some upgradeability in the future. I will post some frame rate screenies when I get her built!

The release of Black Shark finally made me go through with building a new machine. My Core Duo laptop just isnt' cutting it.

Happy holidays to all.

That is a solid build that you have there! Are you going to put together a build log?

Hi Evontroy,

I will do my best to take some pictures and post my build findings. I don't know about a "log". I am so excited to get the thing built! :)

Another update, my girlfriend ordered the TrackIR 4 for a gift. It should be here sometime next week! :) Assuming that nothing arrives DOA, I should be up and running by the 29nth.

Building a rig is definitely an exciting endeavor. A log is basically a record of your progress in building the rig; but it seems like your doing that. Good luck, looking forward to your findings because I am currently in the market for an X58 setup.

You go X58, stay away from Gigabytes boards...just fair warning. Wish I could have got the eVGA x58 board myself...

I might go with the Intel X58 board or an Asus P6T Deluxe. What's wrong with the Gigabyte X58 board?

All my other machines were built with Asus boards in the past, so I decided to stick with them. My last Asus board was a PC800E Delux for those that want a blast from the past.

I looked at the at some of the other boards but the Newegg custom reviews from those that bought them were kind of scary. Some had a bunch of DOA's, other manufacturers seemed to have BIOS problems or they were very picky about which triple channel ram you could run. The P6t Delux seemed to have the best overall set of reviews.

Thanks for the feedback!! I will take that into consideration.

I have yet to receive a working one. The intel boards are horrible as well, from what Ive heard. The EVGA board is the best of the bunch so far.

Go with the Asus P6T. ;)

I am not too keen on Evga and motherboards (I was a 780i adopter. lol). I won't buy an Evga mobo. I like their videocards, but their mobos.......

The Asus P6T has recieved excellent reviews, is priced very well, is easy to overclock, and for me has been rock solid. I wouldn't change a thing on it to be honest (except for maybe re-organize the PCI slots, lol). The P6T is probably the best "all-around" X58 board out right now (read reviews of it and customer feedback at various sites).

If Intel could make an X58 board like their Bad Axe 2 LGA775 board, they would be rockin'.

Hiya Arklight,

What types of frames are you seeing with your corei7? Can you let us know what detail settings you have and also...are you using a trackIR4?

An update for everyone else:

Half of my parts are in Las Vegas and the other half are in Salt Lake city according to UPS.com.

An update for everyone else:

Half of my parts are in Las Vegas and the other half are in Salt Lake city according to UPS.com.

All settings maxed except water (normal) and view distance (medium). At 1600x1200x32 8xFSAA and 16xAF I get about 40 FPS with a lot of stuff around (when my processor was at the default 2.66). When I am just flying around, my FPS pretty much stay around 65-85 (85 is my refresh rate). I do not have TrackIR4, but I do have TrackIR3 Pro (havent set it up yet though). For what it's worth, my performance did not change at 1920x1200. My GTX is severly bottlenecking my i7. I really should be running SLI, especially since my processor is running so fast. The i7 scales extremely well with SLI. Note that for this performance I do not have the affinity set to all 4 cores.

Since OC'ing I have only checked what my performance is a few times, but I think I picked up another 15-20 fps or so. If I set the affinity for all 4 of my cores my performance is very good and obviously goes up even higher. It seems to run smooth as butter with only a slight jump in the frame rate once in a great while.

Needless to say, I am getting quite a bit better performance than my E6600 oc'd to 3.2 ghz. in my old rig. A new videocard should really help. The 8800GTX just can't keep up with my processor.

Thanks for the response! In that case, you may want to take a look at this article if you are in the market for a decent mid-level card:

http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=3479&p=4

Take a look at what the suggest for a good mid-range card if you are a corei7 owner. :)

By the way, sharkeyextreme has a review on the NZXT Temptest case that I ordered. It is a pretty interesting read:
