32 GB to 64 GB Ram

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

So I have recently started playing liberation with a server set up on the same machine, but I've noticed that my ram is getting full (up to 31.5 GB ) whilst on the Syria map on a fairly large campaign.

Would I notice much of a difference upgrading from 32 GB to 64 GB? DCS has crashed on me before whilst running Liberation and I believe it could be because my ram is full. I do have other programmes open like TrackIR, Sim shakers and obviously the DCS server. Any thoughts welcome!

Short answer, in your case yes.

I think you got all the info you needed in BitMaster's post, but FWIW I was seeing 99% RAM usage on 32GB in Syria in SP. Added another 32GB, it never goes above 67%, again SP (mostly with Apache).

I can assure you I have had mine at ~55GB RAM usage..... I don't think 32 or 64GB is a matter of question, it's rather "are 64GB already too few?"

I am not saying you should go for 96 or 128GB but 64GB are actually a good thing, w/o any doubt.

Yes, yes and yes again. I recently got into multiplayer, noticed the stutters so upgraded to 64gb ddr4. Now here is the interesting bit. I had G.Skill 3200Mhz C14 Samdung B-die. I upgraded to 3600Mhz C18 Micron. I dont think the speed and timing are that essential, the 64gb kit gave smoother gameplay overall. Much much better.

Bear in mind that most CPU's won't take more than 64GB without a massive drop in speed (by both memory controller limitation and motherboard design), I would hold off from a proactive 128GB upgrade unless capacity becomes the main bottleneck. I dont think there are many 128GB memory kits outside of quad channel systems and cost will be thru the roof.

This is an issue for me. Im evaluating an upgrade to 64GB but even that is already expensive as is and not much future proofing in that as far as I can see (128GB kits are not even sold here).

Yes Pilotasso,

the real concern I have is that 2-channel DDR4 is not "wide enough" for 128GB, it just fits the 64GB size with roughly about the same GB/sec bandwidth at around 52-55GB/sec.

My rule of thumb has always been, not more RAM than I can shuffle in ONE second. If I really needed 128GB I would move to a Chipset with more Channels or to a DDR5 system that

can shuffle 128GB in ~1sec.

I thought about 128GB and I could have gotten a kit for not much more than my 64GB kit but with lesser timings and MHz...that might be OK for developing or VMware, but not for gaming

when the Simulation really needs to push/pull lots of data to and from the RAM and foremost, my last 8700k was a RAM-disaster board and I wanted proper RAM this time and no funny

experiments.

Will there be a difference in performance between using 4 x 16GB sticks vs 2 x 32Gb sticks? I already have 32GB (2 x 16GB) and I'm thinking of upgrading to 64GB, but how to do it?

It's more cost effective to buy two more of the same 16GB sticks that I'm already using, than to buy two new 32GB sticks and discard 2 perfectly good 16GB sticks.

Even if using 2 channels of 32GB does perform better than using 4 channels of 16GB, I assume 64GB (4 x 16) overall will still be better than 32 GB of x2 16?

Ehhh,

you are mixing up terms. Channels and Ranks. Your CPU has 2 memory channels, each of those can be populated with 2 modules. Each module can be Single Rank or Dual Rank and not every combination of amount of modules & size & speed and number of Ranks is suited for every CPU. There are limitations, just check the QVL for RAM of that CPU and Board.

64GB for example can be 4x16GB, but those 16GB modules can be made of 8-Gbit chips or 16-Gbit chips on the module. With 8-Gbit you need 16 chips on the module ( Dual Rank ) and with 16-Gbit chips you only need 8 chips ( Single Rank ). Samsung B-die was only made as 8-Gbit, so any 16GB module with B-die is a Dual Rank, like the ones I use. I have another kit of B-die, 4x8GB with 8 x 8-Gbit aka Single Rank modules.

Usually, it is faster to have Dual Rank in our common Desktop chipsets. To get Dual Rank with Single Rank modules you have to use 2 modules per channel, 4x8GB with 8-Gbit dies/chips on the module presents itself as a Dual Rank config. Ergo, 4 x Dual Rank appears as Quad Rank and can be stressfull for your Memory Controller.

That's how I understood it, chances are..I am wrong 😉

I have a DDR5 rig and am using 32GB of Corsair Dominator at 6200mhz. I heard so many people mentioning issues with MP and Syria servers using all their ram I bought another 32GB set just for if I start playing those servers. Unfortunately DDR5 mother boards don't handle four 16GB DIMMS from two different sets at the moment at full speed so when I install the other set I drop from 6200mhz to 4000-5000mhz, its a trade off.

I am still learning the game and haven't got to play at all in months due to work so I haven't got to test yet if 32 at 6200 is better than the 64@ 4-5000 for this game yet in those types of servers and I am nowhere near ready to play multiplayer.

Hi Sorata, If you have a fast cpu/dram combo and a GPU with plenty of Dram. 32gb will probably be ok. Why dont you try it, hop on the "through the inferno" Syria server, when it has a few players on.

Then use MSI Afterburner to check you Dram and Vram usage. You will know for sure if you need the extra 32gb. I honestly dont know how running it at those speeds will effect it though. Download and install the latest MSI Afterburner and then customise the Overlay display to show "actual" dram and vram usage. Go into settings then monitoring. Check the following "memory usage/process" for both vram and dram. One is near the top of the list the other is down the bottom.

Personally, 64GB, patriot viper makes cheap good enough kit without the Rainbow sparkle RGB <profanity>.

Keep in mind when the average idiot on Reddit say (example) 16GB is enough , 32GB is enough.
Always go x2 of that number.

64GB gives a far more smoother experience, Anyone saying 16GB is fine needs a head wobble.

I was seeing the exact same thing 99% usage out of 32GB. (Not sure why this is) And its no memory leak? I think ED should really update there recommendations for PC specs.

What's the first sign you're running out of ram? Stutters?

Yep, though to be sure, just open Task Manager, which will show you RAM usage.
