Buying a new PC for DCS advice

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

I  want to buy a new PC  and want to play DCS on Max settings  on a  2560  x  1440   Monitor (5ms response ) @ 60+FPS

Here  are the specs for a  PC  I am thinking of getting and want to know if these  Specs are   good enough to avoid Bottlenecking and lag?

I also want Beautiful Eye Candy for Moviemaking.

  • PROCESSOR: Intel Core i7-12700K CPU, 12 Cores* / 20 Threads, 3.6 - 5.0GHz
  • Power Supply: Corsair RM850X 80 PLUS Gold 850W PSU
  • GRAPHICS CARD: Asus ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GDDR6 Graphics Card OR   NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 8GB GDDR6X Graphics Card
  • Memory: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz Memory (2 x 16GB Sticks)
  • CASE: Corsair 4000D Airflow Tempered Glass - Black
  • MOTHERBOARD: ASUS PRIME Z690-P WIFI D4 Motherboard
  • Solid State Drive: 1TB Samsung 870 QVO Solid State Drive
  • COOLER: Noctua NH-U12S CPU Cooler

Any suggestions or feedback would be very much appreciated

Thanks

Keith

Looks like a solid build to me, I don't think you'll have any issue getting the performance you're looking for.

It looks good for me too.

One thing only: If you delay your buy 2-3 months (for whatever reason), I´ll wait for the next gen CPU and GPUs on 4th quarter.

Next gen PCs will carry a decent upgrade in my opinion, but you don´t need to wait if you are ready to play now on flat screen.

Go higher on the DDR 4 memory. Tip for DCS go for a powerful CPU and 64 gb ram.

MY SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware Intel pentium 3 @ 800 MHz, 256 Mb RAM, Geforce 2 64Mb, Dell screen 1024x768 + Microsoft sidewhiner joystick + TrackIR 2 + TrackClitPro SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 98, Noice Attack & VIASAT PRO, SnackView

Looks like a solid build to me. I think 32 GB is enough, if you're looking at increasing the budget then I think you'd get more out of a higher tier GPU than increasing RAM to 64 GB.

System specs: i5-10600k (4.9 GHz), RX 6950XT, 32GB DDR4 3200, NVMe SSD, Reverb G2, WinWing Super Libra/Taurus, CH Pro Pedals.

+1 for 64GB

adding another 32GB later on could be tricky, I'd go 64GB from day 1 on.

64GB, you surely mean?
With such an ammount of RAM, and in my own experience (YMMV), it doesn't seem to really matter.

I started with 16GB/32GB min/max pagefile (from when using 32GB RAM before), then onto System Managed Size (set automatically by Windows) to see if there's any benefit.
Couldn't notice any difference TBH.

I do feel it has to have a bare minimum. Some programs and games (old legacy ones mostly) need at least 800MB set as minimum, otherwise they won't run, so (IMO) not using a pagefile at all is never to be considered.

I finally set it to 1GB/2GB min/max (yes, that small) to minimize SSD (NVMe) drive usage.
The pagefile is barely used with 64GB of RAM - most I've seen is 60% on a really hectic mission online with other stuff opened in background - and the system runs smooth and fast at all times, has been so for months now.

Wel, there are multiple reasons why adding another kit of RAM modules to an already existing one may end in pulled hair and SPD defaults.

Maybe the easiest one to understand is that you will likely not get the exact same batch of IC's on your new modules, even if they are the same brand, model and spec there are real chances that the IC's are differently spec'ed or even from a different vendor ( Samsung, Micron, Hynix, etc. ) without saying anything about that on the packaging. That is something your IMC does not like at all, a mix of modules. The higher the speed, the tighter the latency and the bigger the GB-size the harder it gets for the IMC to manage all that and not fail once.

You might get lucky, you may pull your hair. You will find out once you go that route.

If your Motherboard holds two M.2 SSD's I would get two 1TB drives, I had one and had to get another for lack of room.  I've got IL2, IL2 Beta, DCS and DCS Open Beta on that 1TB drive...I was quickly running out of room.. I went out and got another M.2. The OS is running off of an SSD in the case's rack, Seagate 500Gb SSD. So I've got two 1TB M.2's, one 500GB SSD, and one 350GB Raptor HDD.  IL2 on one M.2 and DCS on the other, OS on the rack SSD, and all my junk/backups on the HDD....

Cheers

This is rather overkill and not really needed for DCS' memory hunger.

If you run 64GB just for DCS you can safely set your PF to fixed size of 8 or 16GB, maybe even 32GB but you will never get that far. If your DCS session tabs into 20GB swap space your sessions is likely going to crash anyway..LoL

Also, with the above guideline you will waste between 96GB - 192GB drive space... not ideal.

I think I totally agree. I just recently changed this just because I seen a video about it. I had to max set for 32gb. I will take your advice and redo.
