Nvidia 1660 6Gb vs 3060 12Gb - worth it?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys!

Looking for advice with regards to graphics card upgrade.

I am running Intel i7 4770 3.4Ghz (@3.7Ghz). This CPU was released in 2013 btw 🙂
I've got 26Gb RAM and decent SSD drive.

My current card is nVidia 1660 6Gb and I am looking to get better FPS. Unfortunately my PC is in a smaller case so only cerain 2-fan cards will fit.
The most powerful would be Asus 3060 12Gb.

I play single-player and missions are not very busy. My resolution is 1920x1200.
Today in the average mission in Ka-50 I get 35-40fps in the cockpit.

Would this upgrade be worth it, considering the card itself and the CPU I've got?

Perhaps someone has an educated guess or maybe even went through similar card upgrade and has before and after numbers 🙂

RTX3070 would be the better purchase, 3060 in the majority of circumstances will not be able to fill that large of a frame buffer so the extra VRAM is pretty pointless.

I would not buy any card without testing how much headroom, IF AT ALL, your 4770 CPU has.

If your CPU is already fully loaded on that 1 core it does make little sense to get a bigger GPU for "MORE FPS", it would be much easier if you said," I want a higher resolution and some more detail ( those that don't tax the CPU too much ).

Do you get the idea behind this ?

Install MSI Afterburner and set up it's OSD to show EACH CPU Core and GPU, as well as RAM and maybe more if you like. Look for the one Core that is under heavy load, if that core is 90+% most of the time, there are no more serious FPS to gain with any better GPU. With DCS, it heavily depends what mission you fly, consider this.

Check your metrics and report back,

I am looking to upgrade also. Would the better purchase be a RTX3060 with 12GB or RTX3070 with 8 GB?

In my Mini-ITX system which I use for my dcs-rig I currently switched from 3060 - 12GB to 3060 Ti - 8GB. I run DCS in 4K and I received the plus of fps I expectet (about + 20%).

But despite the high resolution, I didn't recognize any negative consequences due to reducing the v-ram by 33%.

I actually have no real feeling, how much v-ram would be used in dcs when using high-quality-setting in 4K. Could it be that 8 GB would be enough no matter what settings are being used?
