Regarding the new Top Gun skins

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this

I'd like to voice a concern of the new Top Gun liveries added.

In the Hornet: The 3 kill silhouettes are F-18s (should be F-5s), the stripe curves at the nose when it should be sharp and the helmet texture looks incomplete on the JHMCS part.

Why not add Iceman's F-14 skin instead of an Aggressor F/A-18 with his helmet on? (Also where is Hangman and Fenix's skin shown in the trailer with the yellow or red stripes?)

Maverick's F-14 skin newly added has two left facing VF-1 emblems on either tails, when in the real one they are mirrored to face forward plus they're too large.

Now I could be wrong on some of them and I do apologize if I am but nonetheless

I really appreciate that these are added but once some of these flaws are seen they can't be unseen. There are some community made skins who did it right who's work can be used as an example

its hard to tell with the size of the silhouette but i think they are F-5s er i mean mig28s. the air intakes are in front of the wing.

Why do you think those silhouettes should be F-5's? Are you referring to the planes shot down in the first Top Gun? Because this plane wasn't in that movie... or, if this is a reference to something in the new movie, don't tell me yet, I'm seeing it tomorrow.

 

I will also add that while I agree those do look like F-18's to me too, it's a pretty close comparison from those angles, and seems borderline nit-picky.

The MiG-28s were F-5E, which have leading edge root extensions and look like this:

Sorry, that was ambiguous.

By "this plane", I meant the F-18. not the MiG/F-5.

I know the F-5 doesn't get a lot of love in DCS, but how can anyone say that's not one of the sexiest looking planes ever?! Everything about it's shape oozes awesomeness.  (and I say that as an F-14 fanboi! )

Some might find these details nitpicking but those small details just matter.

Just as that F-14 insignia is really way too big. There are much better user made skins available.

I really hope they make these screen accurate since these pointed out remarks are quite simple task to fix.

Mask isnt a problem, you can wear what you want.

Bigger issue is that F-5 markings are on the wrong posiotion and the are to close of front on the skin, they must be moved back a little like on pictures below.

i do not mean to be a party pooper. the plane in the movie is not a charlie model of the hornet either. it just ruins the realism... /S

I just took a look at the first movie and, unless I watched it wrong, the VF-1 emblem on the right tail is indeed inverted. I mean, looking backwards, as in the new skin. You can barely see it in the flat spin scene.

What do you mean leading edge root extensions? The F-5 were modified for the first film??

Apart from the livery, no. But F-5E's were modified compared to F-5A's, so they don't look like this:

The silhouette of the F-5E looks remarkably similar to that of the F/A-18, and there is a reason for that. The F/A-18 is a derivative of the YF-17. The YF-17 used the F-5E as a starting point for its design. Technically the F/A-18E is an entirely new design that looks very similar to the legacy F/A-18C. So, the family has quite the lineage:

T-38A and F-5A -> F-5E -> YF-17 -> F/A-18A/C -> F/A-18E. One of the engineers responsible for the F-5E was also key to the development of the P-51, F-86, and F-100, so Kelly Johnson of Lockheed is far from being alone as a huge influence on American military aircraft design. For some reason, Edgar Schmued never got quite the publicity that Kelly Johnson received.
