LordBlueBaron22
Hey ya'll. You know that weird post that sort of sticks out of the fuselage of the Corsair? That I've heard is called the navigation antenna. It is said in the Corsair's manual that you can retract that and it recommends that it should only be extended if in use. How does this antenna work? Is it radio direction finding or something different? The manual doesn't explain. Below are pictures of the manual and of the navigation antenna (if you can find it). I'm not sure how exactly that can retract. I assume it folds?nullnull
Ala13_ManOWar
The aerial with the radio wire isn't retractable, the stick behind the canopy might be since it's not something you see regularly in Corsairs IIRC. razo+r
http://tailhooktopics.blogspot.com/2014/01/f4u-corsair-wire-antenna-alternatives.html I assume the nav antenna is the ZB antenna used for homings located behind the cockpit at the belly of the fuselage. I think the reason for all the different types of navigation antennas has to do with technology changing? I assumed the reason the front antenna could retract is because it is sort of in the line of sight. Not a big problem but I assume an annoyance. Ala13_ManOWar
That kind of annoyance is a bit less IRL since you look with two eyes in 3 dimensions. Anyhow, that radio mast in front of the cockpit is a distinctive mark for early Corsair. The link above explains every change in that during Corsair's life. 1 "I went into the British Army believing that if you want peace you must prepare for war. peachmonkey
In IL2 there's a soviet Mig3 ac with a similar radio antenna in front of the cockpit, on the right side of the fuselage. In VR it kind of attracts your attention at first but after a while you don't even notice it. null
-Rudel-
The retracting antenna is located on the bottom of the fuselage. It's connected via a flex cable to the cockpit. 2 https://magnitude-3.com/ https://www.facebook.com/magnitude3llc https://www.youtube.com/@magnitude_3 i9 13900K, 128GB RAM, RTX 4090, Win10Pro, 2 x 2TB SSD i9 10980XE, 128GB RAM, RTX 3090Ti, Win10 Pro, 2 x 256GB SSD, 4 x 512GB SSD RAID 0, 6 x 4TB HDD RAID 6, 9361-8i RAID Controller i7 4960X, 64GB RAM, GTX Titan X Black, Win10 Pro, 512GB PCIe SSD, 2 x 256GB SSD
