Beware! Beware! Spitfire Mk.IX campaign info

Recommended Posts

I had a replay of the first mission and for some reason on this occasion the AI Spitfires would not engage the enemy plane, even if they were being fired upon. They just flew in formation the whole time. 🤔

When I was playing it. I've played the mission a few times now and it has only done it once.

Hmm that’s some AI weirdness/ glitch. I’ve tested it a 1000 times and the ai always engaged,  and I’ve just seen a playthrough video on YT that worked out fine too.

let’s hope it was an isolated random case, let me know if you see anything like that again.

It’s mission 2, they keep doing crazy-s turns not setting course….

hope they can sort this out at ED it kinda ruins the hard work you have put into this!

Keep up the goow work!

BR, Bas

Also been encountering the crazy S-turn issue, but it only happens on specific missions.

On Sortie 2 the AI did the S-turns all the way from Biggin to when they started climbing over the Channel.

On Sortie 5 they didn't start the S-turns until we reached the coast of England, and they continued doing them through much of the climb.

Good evening.

Fingers crossed the random AI S curve formation  flying has been squashed in todays update. (2.7.17.29140).
Having almost given up on this otherwise brilliant campaign, I flew mission 5 again tonight (after the update) and the AI flight all flew straight and true, when a few days ago it was unplayable unless you ignored yellow 3 and flew your own course.

Really looking forward to the rest of these missions now.

Once again my thanks (along with many others) for all the work on making this so historically interesting.

I have just flown mission 2 again.

  • Set course much improved. The gaggle circling over the airfield got itself organized fairly smoothly.
  • Flying in formation still pretty hopeless at times. When at altitude and near the bombers my IAS varies from 120 to 180 kts requiring slamming the throttle from full power to idle and back to remain anywhere near. There were also periods when the other aircraft had a 10° nose down attitude in level flight.

Agreed. It's a great campaign. (Even with some bugs that will hopefully be all gone one day.)

Thanks for the info, good to know the S-turns are gone, ED finally fixed the AI's ability to switch waypoints.

As for all the weird flying and warping, only the recently announced new AI FM will solve it - hopefully. Until then, this is the DCS AI, this is what we've got. No way around it, unless I make the B-17s fly at 70-80 mph faster than they should, which I won't.

It seems like you don't see the little buggers soon enough.

I suggest you set labels on to 'dot only/ symbol only' (whatever it is called now).

I fly in VR and find this is pretty much essential for me to have any chance of surviving.

The saying "lose sight, lose the fight" applies even more if you never never even see them coming.   🙂

The same thing happened to me too 🙂
Now I don't follow and I don't fly straight for more than 10 sec. Up to 7 missions, I haven't been shot down and I shot down six. God speed!

Watched back the TacView and it was the 4x109s at my 10o'clock that dived and circled behind unchallanged.  The flight lead actually told a separate spitfire group to attack those 109s while he vectored us into the main group at 2'o'clock, so I just wrongly assumed they were engaged, silly me.

Successfully negotiated the mission last night, but one thing I did notice is that the audio radio messages don’t seem to reflect what the DCS-AI does,  After the radio message for a spit to turn back with fuel tank issue there is a 20 sec delay before he goes with his No.2,  and again after the radio message to engage (this was the issue I had with the 10o'clock group) some of the Spitfire AI groups just continued to fly around in formations and didn’t seem that interested until they were bounced??  maybe a timing issue ?? not sure how it works tbh....  anyway cheated slightly and put on 'symbol only' ID as I struggled seeing anything at medium range @ 1440p,  DCS need to sort that becuase at 1080p its so much easier to see.

Anyway 2x109 kills (after reviewing tacView 1 kill... other was shot up bad but landed!!! but DCS gave me a kill ???), a wing full of bullet holes and a bumpy landing with 5 lbs of fuel left 🙂 ... a lot better than my first 3 attempts.

Leasons learned..... Ignore flight lead and dont expect DCS-AI to react or do as their told until its too late   💀🙂

PS @Reflected these missions are the best I've done so far.. so imersive even if the AI sucks bullets..... we need more 'Reflected' spitfire campaigns pls  🙂

Thanks All

I bought the campaign a few weeks back and love the attention to detail of this campaign. I obviously suck at flying though as can't get oast the first combat mission escorting the bombers.

Once the 109s show up I try to stick with my number 3 and not be a hero etc, but just end up getting shwacked out the sky by a 109. I tried again and tried just running from one once it got on my tail, but it's impossible to outrun a 109 in a Spitfire, so I got shot down again. I can't even complete it being a coward running away! Haha

I worked out with Tacview what was happening. Half the Spitfires are crashing into each other on takeoff so going into that mass furball with only 8 of the 16 we were supposed to. So we don't stand much of a chance as think there is 25-30 of them. Run afew times now and F2 view the Sputs just keep hitting each other on taxi/takeoff

Please report it with a track in the Channel map bugs section. But make sure you have no mods installed. Or you can even send the track to me on Discord and I'll forward to ED. But it would be nice if I wasn't the only one constantly whining to them about the AI's inability to take off, and some pressure would come from the community too 🙂

Try no to run away but stay close to the other Spits so they can shoot it off your tail.

Thanks will do. I actually watched them after I took off and looks like half the flight use a runway that doesn't exist. Slightly across the angle of the runway thats there. It's like they are on a different map in their minds !

Yes, known issue, and only safe way to avoid problems is to takeoff after everyone. Just give thumb-up and then go behind last plane.

Here is picture of what you're describing.

I was guessing that runway 23 was problematic, but later sorties sometimes don't have that problem. So I'm clueless, I hope ED can troubleshoot from track records.
