128gb upgrade - worth it?

Recommended Posts

Definitely going to be upgrading from 32gb  3200mhz to 3600mhz 128gb and wondering if anyone here had similar upgrades that can share results. I know some ppl upgraded from 32 to 64 and saw less stuttering in VR and overall more stable fps...but not any increase. BTW I am doing this upgrade because I dont really see a point in getting the latest Intel board and DDR5 since theres not much out there at the moment...and it wont cost me over 2k. This is just an upgrade to keep relevant for the time being, nothing more.

I will also report back my findings in this very thread once I get the ram installed. As it is, I am on a beta version of Windows 11 and my performance is all over the place in different games, so would be interested in seeing if anyone had any positive moments to share.

I have had 128GB for almost 2 years and I have not seen very much uber running.   Windows 10 AMD equipment.

If it is for DCS only and on Win 11. I recently upgraded to 64gb, 3600Mhz C18. I play single and multi player at 4k maxed settings. Going from 32>64gb definitely reduced some stuttering in multiplayer. I don't go near the full 64gb though, maybe touch the high 40's in gb usage at most. However that is rare, must of the time its about 34-38gb in multiplayer.

Not considering DCS' needs and our desires but:

as tempting as it sounds, imho DDR4 2-channel is not the proper layout for 128GB. The bandwidth is too little to really make use of it. You will need ~2seconds to shuffle the RAM with an average bandwidth of 50ishGB/sec @ 128GB volume.

128GB either needs 2-channel DDR5 ( with better prices and better specs !!! ) or more than 2 channels on DDR4 and those chipsets and CPU got WAY TOO expensive, see Threadripper and alikes. So DDR5 will be it sometime in the future if we really need to step up to more than 64GB.

Right now 64GB is enough and for more there are no real alternatives available that make sense in all aspects.

I got 128gb because I caught some that were fairly close to the 64gb sticks I was looking at. IIRC I paid an extra 50 bucks for them, so theres that...anyways...

I was on 22H2 Windows 11 insider preview build and it was giving me some serious performance issues, so I just reformatted today. Im going to spend the next few days reinstalling everything and setting up my computer again, but so far I cant really tell that I have 128gb of ram installed now. Will be benchmarking for the day tomorrow.

There is zero difference for everyday computing between 32, 64 and 128GB or even 2TB of RAM.

Other than VMware and DCS nothing ever needed more than 32GB on my desktop machines till today.

Ok heres my first oops Ive made in a judgement call for a pc component in a very long time....didnt realize my motherboard was dual channel and not quad channel. I find that odd as I thought I bought it because it supposedly had quad channel...so, oops...
