RTX3090 with 1080p. Anyone playing with this combo?

Recommended Posts

Now now, hold down your pitch forks. I'm aware RTX3090 with 1080p is an act of blasphemy as a general consensus.

But I'd like to stay with 1080p for cornucopia of reasons. One is that I already have G-sync IPS monitor, and I'd like to stay with it to notice how much electric is going to cost me with RTX3090 on 1080p, and from there an educated guesstimate of 1440p.

Then for once I'd like to enjoy the game at very high settings, and 24GB vram of the card should be pivotal to hit the target.

Anyone using 3090 on 1080p? How's the gaming for you?
And finally, which vendor is generally recommended for quietness and cooling with air? EVGA (any series) is still going over 1700€ in my backyard. Cheapest I can find is MSI GAMING X TRIO for about 1550€.

You said it...blasphemy! If you know you are going to stick with 1080p why would you even consider wasting money and electricity (since you mentioned it as a cost issue) on a 3090! Look at some benchmarks, the 3090 doesn't scale well at all in 1080p.

Dude if you running DCS without a framerate cap the amount of electricity the 3090 will pull on will be roughly the same. Regardless of what resolution your using. Or it will be as high as your CPU can go to keep up with the 3090, so your CPU will consume more electric.

I own a 3090 on water with a 5900x. If I dont use a framerate cap, whether I use 1080p, 1440p or 4k, the difference in electric my PC as a unit pulls from the wall is about 30 watts. Then you have to consider the 3090 requires a certain amount of electric to just run a game, any game on any settings. The lowest I can get mine to pull is about 140 watts with a 60 fps cap.

What I can tell you for DCS on max settings system usage at 60fps, 1080p 210-140watts, 1440p 230-310watts, 4k 290-380watts. Those are close enough, thats a 5900x, 64gb DDR4 and a 3090 on water.

If I were you  I would buy a 42-43" 4k TV and a headtracker and enjoy the magic of DCS at that detail.

hello. i have had my current rig with 3090 since Apr 22, 2021. i run 1440 though. i have had no problems with DCS or any other game for that matter. i get motion sick with VR so i cannot do it. also i see so many people complaining about glitches (and fairly, many loving it) i am a little afraid. with the possibility of DCS engine improvements, everything will improve. except electricity usage 😉

I think what you're describing still sounds more practical.

The soapbox is all yours then if you'd like to share some knowledge and shed some light.

But my corner store dude got the best merchandise  🙂

Seriously though, one of my main concern is about vram utilization as it appears the title is quite hungry about it.
Now from what I gather from this thread and other sources, 3090 isn't optimal for 1080p even a waste for mediocre gains/euro so 3080 then?

You should be looking at team red if you want lots of vram and 1080p performance. AMD does better than Nvidia in most cases at 1080p, if I were you I would be looking at the 6800/6800XT.

Also remember your frame buffer will be storing textures at 1080p resolution so having a lot of vram isn't going to be as necessary as someone storing textures at 4k resolution.

Hector has made a good point there, I had a 6800xt, not great for 4k which is what I wanted. However, when I had 1440p it was perfect for it. Power usage, temps everything. My 3090 would be a total overkill and use more power than I needed. For 1080p this reason can only be greater.
