15 July 2022

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,:pilotfly:

We are working on the MK-84 AIR general purpose, high-drag bomb for DCS: F-16C Viper. The MK-84 AIR contains a large and highly explosive packing, making it one of the most commonly used dumb bombs by the United States. It is with great pleasure that we inform you the MK-84 AIR will complete the Viper’s weapons roadmap.

This week we are eager to share the progress on our Dynamic Weather System. We will soon roll out several enhancements for wider testing that includes rainbows, moving clouds, ice halos, cirrus clouds, a weather preset visualiser tool for the Mission Editor, and more. See the Development Screenshots, they are truly beautiful.

Included in the next Open Beta update will be the KS-19 100mm Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) cannon. Please check out the details below, and keep your eyes peeled for new animations.

Thank you for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics

F-16C Viper

New Weapon

Hero1.png

Coming soon to the DCS: F16 Viper is the MK-84 AIR. This 2,000 lbs general purpose bomb is fitted with a BSU/50U tail assembly ballute that provides high speed, low altitude delivery. The high drag of the bomb allows the aircraft to avoid the blast pattern. This can be an excellent choice to destroy runways, enemy unit concentrations, and high-value targets that require a low-altitude attack. You may select to deliver the bomb in either low-drag or  high-drag mode based on mission requirements. The inert, training version will also be available.

Weather System

Development Progress

Hero2.png

We are currently working on a variety of weather system enhancements. In the above screenshot you may see the progress on the ice halo effect. Also in progress is the addition of cirrus clouds and moving clouds that are affected by wind direction and speed. The next task will be a preset selection window that will allow for rapid weather tuning using the Mission Editor.

KS-19 100mm

Ground Unit

Hero3.png

Originally deployed aboard ships in the Second World War, the towed version was named the KS-19 heavy calibre anti-aircraft cannon, which also had some surprisingly good utility in the ground attack role against heavily armoured targets. Look out for the Soviet 100mm cannon coming in the next Open Beta.

Compared to the 23 and 57mm anti-aircraft artillery guns, the KS-19 allows engagement of targets at even higher altitudes. When combined, the three types of AAA provide a layered air defence umbrella.

Thank you again for your passion and support,

Kola Map

Introduction

Hero1.png

In collaboration with Orbx Simulation Systems, we are excited to announce the development of a new terrain module: the Kola Peninsula. Orbx has over 15 years of experience creating highly detailed scenery and airports for flight simulation platforms.

Hero2.png

For Russia, the mostly ice-free ports of the Murmansk area, home of the Northern Fleet, are of immense strategic importance. Thus, the narrow land corridor from the Kola Peninsula to central Russia has evolved into dense clusters of military airfields and bases.

Similarly, the northern areas of Norway, Sweden, and Finland mirror the military and economic importance of this peninsula, with significant bases for all branches of the respective armed forces and extensive training ranges hosting key exercises for western alliances.

Hero3.png

The Kola map will cover more than 550,000 square kilometers of land across northern Scandinavia and northwestern Russia, plus large sections of the Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea for naval operations.

Detailed airbases, included with the initial release of the Kola Map, will be Bodø, Bardufoss, Evenes, Rovaniemi, Luleå, Vidsel, Monchegorsk, Olenya, Severomorsk-1 and -3, and others. They will be modeled in their contemporary configuration. Beyond airfields, many of the important army and naval bases, test ranges, radar and storage sites will be added, as well as the entire road and railroad network.

Hero4.png

Civilian POIs will also be represented, including key buildings, bridges, hydro dams, power plants, port facilities, and vertical obstructions.

Dramatic fjords and glaciers, with the many islands, creates an interesting coastline. The lake-studded taiga forests and arctic tundra complete the natural beauty of this region. Both Summer and Winter versions of the Kola map are planned.

The Orbx team is collaborating with experienced DCS campaign creators Baltic Dragon and Reflected Simulations to create engaging F/A-18C and F-16C campaigns at launch.

05 August 2022

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,:pilotfly:

It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the latest, planned addition to our aircraft lineup: DCS: Kfir by 3rd party developer, Aviron.

To create more realistic battlefields, we are working on a broader range of infantry animations that will prove vital when moving through uneven ground and settlements. This will be in parallel with improved path finding.

We are also excited to share the substantial improvements coming to the AI-only B-1B Lancer. Please note the textures are still work in progress. Development Screenshots.

Thank you for your passion and support.

DCS: Kfir by AVIRON

Introduction to the Lion Cub

Hero1.png

The Kfir is a single engine, single seat multirole, all-weather combat aircraft based on the Nesher Mirage 5 aircraft. but it is powered by the GE-J79E engine. To accommodate the engine, extensive changes to the fuselage, cooling, wing, and canards were required to retain its excellent performance. It was given the designation KFIR (Lion Cub in Hebrew). The Kfir received various upgrades and special modifications throughout its service.

The Kfir entered Israeli Air Force service in the mid 70’s, and it was used until the late 90’s. It took part in the 1982 Peace for Galilee Lebanon where it carried out unescorted strike missions and received credit for shooting down a MiG-21 in a mixed-dogfight with F-15As.

Hero2.png

An early version of the Kfir without the modified wing and canards (Kfir-C1) was leased to the US Navy and Marine Corps with the designation F-21A. It was used as an aggressor in various locations. The Kfir was also exported to Ecuador, Colombia, and Sri Lanka, and it is actively in use by the private US Aggressor company, ATAC.

Aviron aims to bring the Kfir to DCS in the most realistic fashion possible. The DCS Kfir will simulate the external and internal systems and state-of-the-art flight dynamics based on aerodynamic research, CFD modeling, and wind tunnel data.

Infantry Animations

Development Progress

Hero3.gif

We are pleased to inform you that work is progressing on a range of infantry animations. In the above animation, you can see a work-in-progress animation of a soldier climbing to a higher surface. The new control system will allow units to behave in a more complex and realistic manner.

It also requires the solution of applied problems, such as overcoming obstacles and improved path finding. In some cases, the unit can overcome a situation just by stepping over an obstacle. There are different types of such surfaces that can be up to 1 meter in difference.  The second animation option is for higher obstacles of 1.5 to 2 meters. In this case, the unit will have to climb up the obstacle and then jump off the other side.

B-1B Lancer

Development Progress

Hero4.png

As part of our larger effort to improve older AI units, work is underway on texturing the new AI B-1B model. Most of the rivets, screws, and aircraft skin sheets are already drawn. The aircraft is painted in standard USAF colors. Material surfaces have also been created. Next, the chassis, chassis niches, bomb bay, and cockpit will be painted. We will also apply dirt, dust, traces of aircraft wear and identification marks / technical inscriptions.

12 August 2022

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,:pilotfly:

With the exciting announcement of DCS: Kfir, we are pleased to introduce the upcoming DCS: Sinai map by third party developer OnReTech. This stunningly accurate representation of the Sinai peninsula, eastern Egypt and southern Israel will provide many opportunities for missions and campaigns based on fictional and historical scenarios.

We are eager to provide you with a progress update of the DCS: WWII Marianas map. Based on original US Military and Navy pre-invasion maps, many more plantations, settlements, and other cultural features were discovered. This has allowed us to create a highly-accurate map of the Marianas in the summer of 1944. Please read the details below and check out the Development Screenshots.

Thank you for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

DCS: Sinai

Development Report

Hero1.png

The total size of the DCS: Sinai map is 1500 x 1000 km, of which, 700x700 km will be in high-detail. The map includes the entire Sinai Peninsula, eastern Egypt and the Nile Delta, southern Israel including Gaza, western Jordan, and western Saudi Arabia. This area features a wide variety of landscapes like mountains, rivers, desert, agricultural areas, sea and bays that provide a variety of mission and campaign settings.

Hero2.png

The map is being designed to represent the 2000s and up to the present. It is planned to recreate about 40 airfields, both military and civilian: Wadi al Jandali, Abu Suwayr, Faid Air Base, Nevatim Air Base, Ramon Airbase, and many more.

Hero3.png

The map also contains many military bases and strategic seaports that allow for interesting strike missions. A large number of military facilities and bases will help realize various historical scenarios based on the Arab-Israeli wars, as well as fictional missions and campaigns.

Hero4.png

Major cities include Cairo (including Cairo International Airport), Ismailia, Alexandria, Suez, Port Said, and others. About 100 unique objects and architectural monuments will be included. All objects and assets are divided into territories to present greater unique, regional characteristics. The coastline of the Suez Canal, the Gulf of Suez, and the Gulf of Aqaba will be created in detail.

Hero5.png

The project will consist of three phases, and each phase will include airfields, unique objects, and unique scenes. The first phase will include the entire territory with major cities and 14 air bases in Israel and Egypt. The second phase will add 11 more airfields. The third phase and final phase will add 12-14 more Egyptian military airfields. The OnReTech team is making every effort to ensure that customers will receive the first two phases in early access, which will help to fully reflect the theater of operations of the Arab-Israeli conflicts.

DCS: WWII Marianas

Development Progress

Hero6.png

In order to accurately depict the Mariana Islands in the summer of 1944, the coastline textures and fields are being completely redone based on actual pre-invasion maps courtesy of the United States Navy and Military.  On the island of Saipan, all three Haruji Matsue plantations: As Lito, Chacha, and Marpi Point are being recreated. They provided tons of cane that was processed in the nearby sugar mills and taken to the Sugar Dock to be shipped to Japan.

Hero7.png

The entire island of Tinian is also being recreated in high detail, and it comprises the original Japanese airfields. This large and mostly flat area is also where the first napalm bombs were used against Japanese soldiers hiding in the surrounding jungle and outlying small islands. We are also making improvements to the coastline, settlements, and palm plantations. For more, please check out the Development Screenshots

Hero8.png

Shortly before the retaking of Guam by US forces in June 1944, the island was still under control of the Japanese, it consisted of very small villages occupied by the native Chamorro people. In the modern Marianas map, a lot of this area is covered by cities, but in the Second World War, the land was made up mostly of palm plantations.

We hope you enjoyed this preview of the new maps coming to DCS and we kindly await your feedback.

19 August 2022

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,:pilotfly:

We are thrilled to announce DCS: F-100D Super Sabre by Grinnelli Designs.  The “Hun” is a single seat, single engine fighter designed by North American Aviation that was the original fighter in the legendary Century Series. The Super Sabre was the first USAF fighter capable of supersonic speeds in level flight. Flown extensively in Vietnam, its contribution was irreplaceable.

We have been working on Petrovich AI voice overs for DCS: Mi-24P Hind.  Modifications have also been made to the 9K113 control system, and a more accurate sight design will be available in the next Open Beta. Please read the details below.

Work continues on the modernisation of older AI models, and we are pleased to share progress on the B-52H Stratofortress. Please check out the Development Screenshots.

Thank you for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics

DCS: F-100D Super Sabre

Introducing the Hun

Hero1.png

The F-100D is an advanced version of the Super Sabre that features improved avionics, landing flaps, and larger wings and tail fin. The upgraded avionics include the AN/AJB-1B low-altitude bombing system and an AN/APR-25 radar homing and warning system.

Hero2.png

The F-100D has four 20 mm Pontiac M39A1 cannons, and it has six hardpoints capable of carrying AIM-9 Sidewinders, LAU-3/A unguided rocket pods, and conventional bombs.

Hero3.png

The Super Sabre fighter bomber flew extensively over Vietnam as the United States Air Force's primary close air support jet. The F-100 was in service for 17 years and flew over 360,000 combat sorties before it was retired in 1971.

Hero4.png

DCS: F-100D Super Sabre aspires to be the most faithful re-creation of the Hun ever produced for flight simulation. Working with veteran Hun pilots, the Grinnelli team is dedicated to simulating the avionics systems, weapons, performance, and unique flight model in high fidelity.

Mi-24P Hind

Development Progress

Hero5.png

The first set of Petrovich AI voice-overs are planned to be included in the next Open Beta. To find the sweet spot, we have made recordings starring two former military pilots with slavic accents to provide authentic and informative voice-overs. This will bring the number of spoken phrases to a similar level as in DCS: AH-64D.

We intend to add new voice-overs for both helicopter crew AIs in future updates, and we will be monitoring your feedback to see how you enjoy them. We also plan to support switching between voice-over languages in the Special Tab settings. When that is done, we plan to add Russian language voice-overs to DCS: Mi-24P Hind.

We are enhancing the ATGM sight after receiving new data. The first change to the ATGM sight and guidance unit is its control axis properties. Control voltage is used to move the gyro-stabilised aiming axis of the 9K113 system. There is a limit to how low it can be and the minimum speed that the motors driving this unit can move. The minimal speed of this system is 0.07 degrees per second. We've implemented this limitation for the Mi-24P Hind, and it will be available in the next Open Beta. Operators will mostly feel the difference in scenarios where the ATGM system is used at maximum range and when the target is small or moving at a speed that matches, or is below, the minimum aiming axis speed.

Hero6.png

The Second change is to the sight grid, which is based on new data and references we have received from our subject matter expert and the Monino Central Aviation Museum. With special thanks to them, we have been working on adjusting the missing symbology in x3.3 mode (aiming grid and stadiametric rangefinding cues). Various overall grid size adjustments, along with FOV enhancements for both modes (x3.3 and x10), make it closer to its real counterpart. The diagram above reflects the distance to a target at 2 km.

B-52H Stratofortress

Development Report

Hero7.png

We are pleased to update you with progress on the AI B-52H 3D model. Aircraft textures are nearly complete. The above screenshot illustrates the attention to detail of the landing gear that is now painted and animated. The aircraft's lighting equipment has been set up, and we are now texturing the bomb bay. We hope you enjoyed this update and look forward to your thoughts.

For World War II aircraft, all cooling component systems have been reviewed and updated. We’ve added a new boiling physics system that is based on temperature and pressure. This results in "natural" boiling of these pressurised, closed-loop systems. Battle damage boiling can now be caused by drastic pressure drops from punctures. You can see this as steam effects coming from airframe bullet holes. All warbirds except the Spitfire and Bf 109K-4 have this update. We kindly await your feedback and plan to update all the other warbirds soon.

Enigma

Dear Fighter Pilots, Partners and Friends,:pilotfly:

We are delighted to introduce a new third party developer, Crosstail Studios, who are developing the DCS: A-1H Skyraider. The ‘Spad’ excelled in the US Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force due to its immense payload and ability to loiter over the battlefield for extended periods. It also served with the British and French Air Forces. Take a look at this Flying Legend now.

DCS: Supercarrier is undergoing its next stage of updates, which will include improvements to the textures and lighting of the Air Boss (PRIFLY) station and Briefing Room functionality. In parallel, we are also working on directing aircraft from parking to catapults and from the landing box to parking. Please read the details below and check out the Development Screenshots.

We are excited to announce the upcoming release of a substantial update to how the AI performs Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM) for jet aircraft. This updated AI brings significant changes that we hope will result in a far more capable AI that fights more like a human.

Thank you for your passion and support.

Yours sincerely,

Eagle Dynamics

A-1H Skyraider

Introduction

A-1H_Newslaetter_01.png

The A-1H Skyraider is a single engine, low wing, attack aircraft that served most of its time during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Known for its ability to carry heavy ordnance loads, the Skyraider is powered by a Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone supercharged radial engine; the same engine that powered the B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber.

A-1H_Newslaetter_02.png

DCS: A-1H Skyraider will aim to be the most accurate representation of this aircraft for any flight simulator. Crosstail Studios has a partnership with the Cavanaugh Flight Museum, from which they have been given access to all aircraft, which includes two airworthy Skyraiders.

The Crosstail Studios team has spent an enormous amount of time recreating the A-1H Skyraider based on 3D scans from the aircraft located at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum. Subject matter experts have guided the flight model characteristics and other key details. Crosstail also has the support of the A-1 Skyraider Association veteran’s community to aid in the development of this magnificent aircraft.

A-1H_Newslaetter_03.png

The Skyraider was primarily used to support combat search and rescue, and it helped save countless lives during the Korean and Vietnam wars. In a world quickly evolving into jet- turbine powered aircraft, the Skyraider still managed to have a long and successful service. In fact, the A-10 Warthog was designed with some of the characteristics of the Skyraider, including heavy ordnance load capabilities and long endurance.

A-1H_Newslaetter_04.png

Crosstail Studios is also proud to announce their partnership with Echo One Niner Audio Production who will produce the A-1H Skyraider audio! The Echo 19 team has extensive resources and a passion for recreating true-to-life audio experiences. With their help, the A-1H will come out of the box sounding fantastic.

The Crosstail Studios team has put together a brief teaser video, demonstrating the potential behind their new incoming full fidelity module for DCS. Check it out!

Stay tuned for more Skyraider news on https://www.crosstailstudios.com

Supercarrier

Development Progress

Supercarrier_Newslaetter_05.png

We continue work on the PRIFLY deck and Briefing Room of DCS: Supercarrier. The Briefing Room functionality that will allow mission planning information to be shared across tablets. The briefing officer will also be able to display details, like the F10 map, on the projector prior to mission time. Later, we will expand the Briefing Room art to include multiple squadrons.

AI BFM

Development Progress

F-16C_Newslaetter_06.png

Basic Flight Maneuvers noteworthy features

Based on performance characteristics, each aircraft type will favor either one-circle (nose to nose), two-circle (nose to tail) fights or a combination of the two. This will result in dramatically different tactics based on the type. Flying against a Viper will be very different from fighting a Hornet, for instance.

When performing a merge, the AI will aim to dictate turning room based on the opposing aircraft’s type, aspect angle, and energy state. Meaning, a one-circle fighter will try to minimize turning room whereas a two-circle fighter will try to create an offset to allow a lead turn across the tail.

Particularly in a two-circle fight, the AI is much better at maintaining optimal sustained turn rate and will adjust nose position below and above the horizon to maximize turn rate or convert energy into altitude with excess energy. The AI Skill Level setting will determine how much G the AI will generate. At Ace level, the AI is excellent at managing airspeed for optimal performance.

Based on how the fight develops, the AI may switch between one-circle and two-circle according to merge angle and relative airspeed. This provides a much more dynamic opponent.

Please note that World War II aircraft often use a different BFM toolbox, and we will develop a unique set of BFM improvements for these aircraft, in addition to multi-ship Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM) behavior for all aircraft later.

Normandy 2

Introduction

01_DCS_Normandy_2_Hero1.png

The DCS: Normandy 2 map enlarges the DCS: Normandy 1944 map to 400 x 600 km to include London, Paris and the surrounding regions. Normandy 2 will feature over 130 original map objects and a detailed area six times larger than DCS: Normandy 1944.

02_DCS_Normandy_2_Hero2.png

The Normandy map has been redesigned to include new churches, train stations, market squares, and gas stations, plus many other cultural and natural features. The United Kingdom region has been completely redone to a much greater level of detail and accuracy. This is in addition to also updating the French region.

Key Features of DCS: Normandy 2

  • Recreation of London and Paris.
  • Improved ground textures, roads, rail lines, fields, forests and new trees.
  • Additional telegraph and power poles, semaphores, fences and new buildings
  • More accurate rivers and coastlines, including the chalk cliffs of southern England.
  • Updated and unique airfields with greater details and more equipment to better match the period. Normandy 2 brings the number of unique airfields to 50.

03_DCS_Normandy_2_Hero3.png

DCS: Normandy 2 will benefit from new technology that allows existing maps to be extended with low-detailed areas. If you wish to pass on the upgrade, you may still join multiplayer servers and compatibility with campaigns will remain. Please note that the Normandy 2 upgrade is required to experience a much higher level of detail.

DCS: Normandy 2 will be available as a complete map for $59.99 USD. If you have either DCS: Normandy 1944 or DCS: The Channel maps, you can purchase Normandy 2 for $14.99 USD. If you own both, you can purchase DCS: Normandy 2 for only $9.99 USD.

DCS: MB-339

Development Report

04_DCS_MB399_Hero4.png

The MB-339’s development will receive continuous improvements and additions that will result in the DCS: MB-339 being the most accurate reproduction of this aircraft for PC Flight Simulations. Major features at release will include the following:

Electrical System

Includes five separated DC bus (Essential, Primary, Secondary, Anti-Ice, Armament), six AC bus (115V Essential, 26V Essential, 115V Primary, 26V Primary, 115V Secondary, 26V Secondary), Circuit Breakers logic and BUS Reset switch. Each bus becomes active according to a specific logic based on Generators and Alternators activation. Load metres indicate the actual electric load on generator 1 and 2.

05_DCS_MB399_Hero5.png

Hydraulic System

Two separated circuits (Main and Emergency). Main circuits provide power to the landing gear, wheel brakes, nose wheel steering, flaps, speedbrake, and aileron servo control. If you deactivate the aileron, you will not be able to make a complete lateral excursion of the stick. The excursion decreases if the airspeed increases for a dynamic pressure effect.

The emergency system provides the pressure required for the landing gear emergency extension and operation of the emergency brake. The parking brake is connected to the same circuit so if you activate the emergency brake, the anti skid will not work.

Anti-ice System

Canopy icing and windshield demister feature, pitot and AoA sensors anti-ice and engine anti-ice. Ice formation causes loss of aerodynamic and engine performance.

06_DCS_MB399_Hero6.png

Pressurisation System

Based on the pressurisation chart reported in the flight manual, the cabin altitude gauge will show the actual equivalent cabin pressure. The system can be turned off via the dedicated guarded switch and the ram air scoop can be used to improve the cabin ventilation during an emergency in case of air contamination. Air contamination is not reproduced but activating the ram air scoop when the cabin is pressurised causes a loss of pressure. Also included is the possibility to regulate cabin temperature to avoid the canopy fogging.

Navigation System

VOR/DME, TACAN, ILS and GPS (with working CDU and possibility to set the DTC).

COMM1 and COMM2 radios

Reproduced according to flight manual procedures with three separated PTT. Stick PTT allows communication to selected radios on ICS panel, COMM1 and COMM2 PTTs located on the throttle, which allow communication on relevant radios overriding the ICS radio selection. DCS-SRS is compatible from day 1.

07_DCS_MB399_Hero7.png

Armament System

Realistic master arm logic; if the master arm switch is turned on when on the ground, then in flight with the gear lever up it is necessary to turn off the master arm switch and then on again to allow weapon firing. Also working are the ground fire switch, fire inhibitor switch (for instructor station), fuze switch and single/ripple logic.

Oxygen System

Includes two separate bottles. Oxygen consumption is based on the number of pilots. If you select "solo" in the Mission Editor, you will have greater oxygen autonomy.

Fuel System

Fully working electrical and mechanical pumps, fuel dump, fuel unbalance and fuel transfer logic.

Also included is initial Multi-Crew synchronisation, an IFR Hood for training flights and a complete damage model.

08_DCS_MB399_Hero8.png

The MB-339’s development is progressing very well, and we are confident with the current progress. With great pleasure we inform you of its imminent release. Please stay tuned for details and check out the Development Screenshots

KA-50 Upgrade

To Black Shark 3

Hero1.png

The Black Shark 3 Upgrade Program will allow all existing owners of the Black Shark 2 to upgrade to Black Shark 3 at a reduced price. Now is a great time to download DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark 2 to get to grips with this fearsome beast in time for the Black Shark 3.

Black Shark 3

Development Report

Hero2.png

3D Helicopter Model

The completely new and more accurately detailed 3D model is based on newly available data, drawings and photographs. The model incorporates our latest technologies and materials, which will bring the Black Shark 3 to the current standards of recent DCS modules and exceed it. A novel modeling of internal compartments, engines, transmission, and control elements is a first for a DCS module. All of this exquisite detail can be seen under the hatches.

Hero3.png

Air-to-Air Missiles

Igla missiles are similar to those used in MANPADS and they are designed to intercept subsonic aircraft out to 5 km. New wingtip pylons have been added for Igla missiles that provide two additional hardpoints to the four existing ones.

Missile Warning System

The sensors of the Missile Warning System (MWS) are integrated into the onboard defense system with the ability to display detected threats on the ABRIS display. Four combined MWS sensors operate in the IR and UV ranges, and they are located in pairs on the nose and tail of the helicopter. When a launch is detected, a missile launch warning is displayed on the ABRIS display and automatic dispensing of flares is possible.

New Inertial Navigation System

The inertial navigation system in the Ka-50 is now based on complex information processing algorithms using the Kalman filter - just like in real navigation systems. The calculator receives data from several navigation sensors. Based on these input data, the Kalman filter vector is calculated, consisting of three-axis coordinates, velocities, heading, drift angle, and wind speed. Thanks to the filter, even if one or more navigation sensors fail or give out data with a large error, the navigation parameters will continue to be calculated indirectly through data from other sensors. This model of the inertial navigation system is the most advanced in DCS and will be used in the development of new aircraft.

For fans of the classic Ka-50 of Black Shark 2, there will be a Mission Editor option to remove the Missile Warning System (MWS) sensors and Igla Air-to-Air missiles.

The MB-339 is an Italian, single engine, twin seat, jet trainer and light attack aircraft that was derived from the Cold War MB-326. The aircraft entered service in the early 1980s and quickly became the primary trainer of the Italian Air Force.

Hero4.png

The MB-339 was exported and many are still in service. Flown by the Armada de la República Argentina (Argentine Navy), this aircraft took part in the Falklands-Malvinas war. It was also used by the Eritrean Air Force against rebels, smugglers, and the Ethiopian Air Force.

Historic operators of the A version of the MB-339 were the Air Forces of Italy, Malaysia, Nigeria, Peru, United Arab Emirates, Argentina and Ghana. Thanks to its superb flying qualities, the MB-339’s PAN aerobatic version is also used by two national aerobatic teams: The “Frecce Tricolori” (Italian Air Force) and the “Al Fursan” (“The Knights” – UAE Air Force). The MB-339 is the only jet aircraft capable of performing the famous Lomcovák maneuver.

Hero5.png

The MB-339 will be released in an almost feature-complete state. Some of the most interesting features available at release include:

DCS 2.8

Progress

Hero2.png

After the most recent patch, DCS is now running on Open Beta version 2.8.0.32235.1. To address your most common questions, we have put together a list of points.

What is DCS 2.8?

DCS 2.8 is a quality of life update.  DCS 2.8 is the next step forward in realism and quality of life improvements. We added atmospheric effects like moving clouds, rainbows, glories, ice halos, and the visual quality of the clouds. We also dramatically improved the AI Basic Flight Maneuvers (BFM) logic for jet aircraft.

Virtual Reality

Because the 2.8 update introduced moving clouds that require additional calculations some of you may have noticed a change in your VR performance. We are investigating this and will strive to address this as soon as possible.

Easter Eggs

During the Halloween period, we included some easter eggs that you may have already seen. We are very thankful to the community for the overwhelmingly positive response, and we would love to continue this tradition in the future with the addition of an Options setting to opt out.

Lighting & Shadows

We introduced a new point lighting system to the DCS: Persian Gulf map as a test. This allows light sources like parking ramp flood lights, and more to cast dynamic lighting of objects and within cockpits. We plan to implement this lighting to other maps later.

Shadows are an important part of this visual effect, and this improvement to the lighting will also require related dynamic shadows from these light sources. We are planning a new approach to handle the complexity of shadows in DCS.

All of the mentioned features are available in the latest DCS Open Beta update, and we encourage you to check them out for yourself! Please remember that the Halloween Sale is still on, and it is a great opportunity to take your DCS to the next level with new maps, aircrafts, and campaigns! Check out the Shop.

Mi-24P Hind

Development Progress

Hero2.png

Work on the Petrovich AI for DCS: Mi-24P Hind continues, and our latest development has focused on Petrovich background behaviors. These determine what Petrovich will do when not busy blowing stuff up with ATGMs or searching for targets through the periscope sight.

One of the activities, which is almost finished, will allow Petrovich to scan for threats and warn you of them. Petrovich AI will move his Field Of View (FOV) in different directions to scan for potential threats like missiles or projectiles fired at you. The FOV is limited, and if Petrovich looks at something on the starboard side, he won't notice gun or missile fire coming from the port side. When detecting threats, Petrovich will only notice missiles from far away when a smoke trail is still present. The projectile detection range is limited to 2.5km. Petrovich will not warn you of everything detected and flood you with messages. Rather, Petrovich will be looking at relative speeds and trajectory to decide if a missile or hail of rounds pose a threat. Just like a real co-pilot, he will make educated guesses and warn about incoming missiles, even if the missile is locked on another target that is close to you.

Messages and voice overs will be in the form of clock direction calls, between 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock. Petrovich will also use countermeasures automatically when he detects incoming missiles. We also have a new video from Wolfpack345 ready that reviews all Petrovich AI functionality. Check out DCS: Mi-24P Hind Petrovich AI.

We will next move this technology to George in the AH-64D.

The new DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark 3 adds great new features that include: Igla air-to-air missiles that significantly expands the Ka-50’s combat capabilities against other aircraft and the new Onboard Defense System (ODS) that detects and warns you of incoming missiles. Also, for the first time in DCS, a physical model of the Inertial Navigation System (INS) has been implemented that includes alignment before the flight, drift error accumulation, and the ability to correct according to preset fixpoints. For more details, please read the Black Shark 3 White Paper.

Hero3.png

The Ka-50 Black Shark 3 is based on the helicopter factory number 8798000025, Serial number 00-05. This particular aircraft was completed on June 18, 1990 and became the standard for Ka-50 mass production. A variety of historically accurate liveries are included.

A special Air Strike Group of two Ka-50s (No. 24 and 25) and a C2 Ka-29 took part in Combat Operations in Chechnya from late 2000 to early 2001.  In those engagements, the Ka-50s had standard camo skins with side numbers, but no country markings. That skin was intended to appear as neutral, but at the MAKS-2003 airshow at Zhukovsky, the skin was repainted with country markings and yellow side number 25 on each side.

Hero4.png

The Black Shark skin helicopter was fielded by the 344th Army Aviation Combat and Training Center at Torzhok in 1995. By the end of 1996, it was painted black with a shark tail and mouth. Ka-50 helicopters were frequent guests at many exhibitions and air shows. That’s why there are a wide array of airshow skins. We present two of these to you; the “Werewolf” and the “Black Shark” for the No. 18, commissioned July 1, 1991.
