A NATO Northern Flank map! YES!!! 😱

Though I really hope DCS' naval environment improves because this is the perfect place for it.

Excellent news.

Hoping that there's going to be more sea than shown on the map, to allow somewhat more realistic distances from shore, but otherwise, can't wait.

I mean, it would be pretty easy to extend it north further into the Barents - it's just sea.

The real piest du resistance for me would be to have Iceland (even if on its own separate map which is later joined together) for a fantastic RSR experience, especially if we get this for the Tu-22M-3 (not to mention a place where the F-4E and F-15 were based historically). Apart from Jan Mayen (which is a tiny island with no permanent population), it's all just sea.

Though if such a thing were to ever happen we'd really need to transition away from flat maps.

Regarding the choice of the location, the Kola Peninsula fully corresponds to nice "cold war" scenarios.
I don't know Orbx at all and as this will be their first map in DCS we hope to see a quality result.
The finalization of this map is probably not for immediately but for my part I have only one wish: to have a realization of quality at low altitude with at least the same quality as the Syrian map. The South Athlantic map is currently very disappointing on this aspect...
We are waiting and looking for more screenshots, good luck to the Orbx team!

If the just deliver the details and quality most of their assets for other flight sims already have, this may become a new standard in DCS map making - just check their site with plenty of examples: as I am not sure if a link to their site is allowed here, just search for FTX ORBX.

Wow, this is huge news indeed! For me this was totally unexpected. And what a nice surprise this is. Absolutely fantastic map for the most important naval-air theater of the Cold War.

And it looks like it is going to be huge. It includes the area for a Soviet land invasion of Sweden via Finnland, which is going to be Viggen homecountry. I would have considered it to be completely appropriate if this would have been its own map, separate from the North Norway-Kola theater. For me this feels like two maps in one.

Just a thought, maybe we should do a DCS "group buy" for the additional SSD storage space that we're going to need.

Great news. EF2000 map?

Very interesting to see what the Orbx team can do with the DCS engine. Can they port assets, mesh directly to DCS if they want to? Also the Orbx presence in the civvie sim market is huge, this could make some MSFS users take more notice of DCS.

We heard nothing after the A2A guys were pictured with Wags a few years ago and the confirmation A2A were talking to ED. Unfortunately the MSFS 2020 announcement and Covid came soon after and disrupted things. Hopefully next.

the airport is just a flat texture, so no: it's not almost finished

I assume that the process of creating terrain in ORBX is so fine-tuned and automated that we won't have to wait long.

screenshot, obviously now deleted, seems like Trondheim airport to me. And it might actualy be from ORBX Trondheim FS2020....

That was my thinking. If Orbx already have objects can they be used in DCS quite easily?

For MSFS they have a nice freeware mesh for Iceland… 😉

Fantastic news I must say.
Ef2000 map jumped into my thought the minute I saw today's newsletter. Ef2000 game was such a great game for me back then and with Heatflur/Truegrit Typhoon coming I am going to be reliving those sweets times in the closest map in dcs to that from DID.

The developer are renowned for making world class terrain, so I very sure it is going to be an exciting experience in this map. This is surely going to put ED in yet another spotlight.

Like others have mentioned, hope we do not have to wait too long (ironical and infamous 2 weeks-time) to get this map.

I wish all parties involved the very best in this project.
