How does it do it?

I've been looking a the Pimax HMD's and I noticed that a lot of people currently using it have equal or lesser systems than I do.

I've got a G2, 32GB mem, I5-10600 and I get an "OK" video at an average 40FPS. While these people rave about how well the Pimax runs and the quality of the video.

This leaves me asking the question, How does such a high end VR headset run so well?

It all comes down to render resolution. The default (100%) render resolution for the G2 is much higher than the actual display resolution (about 3100x3100 pixels per eye)
Don´t know what it is for Pimax headsets, but might very well be lower than that, although the display has a higher resolution.

Performance and quality in VR are also very subjective things.  Try not to get too wrapped up in what other guys are saying about their performance and quality with a Pimax versus what you're seeing with your G2.  You say you're getting 40 FPS on your G2.  Is there a reason you're not running Motion Reprojection on yours?  You might try turning that on and seeing what that gets you for a performance gain.  Your frame counter will lock at 45, but remember that Motion Reprojection's interpolated frames aren't visible to the counter, so the frame rate your eyes perceive will actually be between that 45 FPS and 90FPS.

I'm using OpenXR and the toolkit that goes with it. When I turn the MR on with the toolkit, my video looks like I am looking through a sheet of water. I don't know what's causing this and have not had the interest to pursue it.

Thanks for the info, RackMonkey.  I'm not using OpenXR at the moment, so I haven't seen what Motion Reprojection does with that.  I just read in another thread, however, that it may be an issue with AMD cards.

Running Pimax 8Kx with 5950x, 3090 and 32GB Ram.  I set PiTool SS to 2 and lately have been setting FOV to Small in PiTool.  I use OpenXR, OpenXRToolkit and OpenComposite and run resolution 31xx by 31xx and though I have not checked to see what FPS I get, everything is sharp, crisp and smooth.  I play DCS, FS2020 and IL-2 daily.  If I set FOC to Normal, I back down the resolution a bit.  My game settings are always in the Ultra-High values.

Hope this helps.

Well there are several different model of Pimax HMD.  I had a 5k Super that worked very well at a solid 90 FPS but with medium to low setting and not so good resolution.  Never used motion smoothing as it does not look good for me, I was getting 90 FPS anyway and it was so smooth.

Then I switched to an 8k+.  With a lower minimum refresh rate of 72hz, I was able to pump up details and get a much better quality since my target FPS is now 72.  The image processing load is the same as both 5k Super and 8k+ have a 2.5k pixel image per eye input signal.  The difference with the 8k+ is that it upscales the image to 4k per eye.  The image quality is not as good as a 8kX which is native 4k, but I get much more FPS with a resulting super smooth experience.

All this to say it all depends on which Pimax HMD we are talking about.

What I read though is that the G2 has a better image quality but much less smooth video, and a lot of frustration and tweeking to do in order to find the sweet spot.  For sure the pimax take a lot of work as well but seems that the G2 is even worst.
