Is the only way to determine that your wing tanks are empty is to notice that the internal tank needles are moving?

If all the selected external tanks are empty, you'll get a master caution and a warning panel light indicating external fuel empty. This gets a little tricky if you select both the center and wing fuel pylons and one pylon has a larger tank. In that case, just select one at a time, center or wing.
