[help] 27" 1080p or 1440p!?

Recommended Posts

Hey did someone upgrade from 24" 1080p to 27" 1080p?
A lot time i have read that 27" 1080p sucks, but other say it´s ok. I have even a friend play on a 32" 1080p and say it looks good.
Also i heard lot times that spotting get worse at 2k compared to 1080p. Very few say it´s better in 2k.
I know that i  could buy 2k and just play at 1080p Resoulution, but far as i know it is always recommended to play the native Resolution of the Monitor.

All i can say is that 1080p still looks fine for me and i would rather keep my extra frames instead loosing them for a higher resolution, but i would like to have a bigger Monitor for better spotting without loosing much picture quality.
So, i wonder if 27" 1080p will look fine as 24" or could i go even bigger!? I play mostly DCS, but sometimes also a Shooter like Squad and i care only about gaming (so i dont need it for Office or so).

I would also like to have G-Sync as i have a nvidia GPU. Does this go well with DCS + Track IR?

i am also interested in responses here.  It would seem that there are definitely varying opinions but man I'd like some updated thoughts from folks.  The last real debate here was from back when the 4k tvs became relatively available and affordable.

what is the recommendation for the resolution vs size argument??/ Is there a sweet spot folks have landed on?

Spotting gets easier as you lower the resolution. And antialiasing gets better as you go upwards. So, if you really care about spotting, I'd go for 1080p.
I'm using a 27" 1080p and its just fine.
In 1080p you'll have those "staircase effects" even if you put on 4x msaa or 2x ssaa. In 2K, its much better.

In a nutshell eyecandy and casual flying = 2K if your pc specs also support it at acceptable fps
You already like how your game looks, and dont want to lose frames for no reason, also helps with the budget? = 1080p

Can't tell anything about 32" or higher, but my 27" is just brilliant and havent had any issues ever.

  • -Relax- changed the title to [help] 27" 1080p or 1440p!?

Hey i have to ask here again. After few months i have still not upgraded my 24" 1080p Monitor....
I think about to get a 1440p 27" Monitor.
So i would play other games in 1440p and DCS still at 1080p for better spotting!

Is anyone here who can compare playing DCS in 1080p on a 1440p 27"Monitor vs 1080p 27" Monitor (nativ)?

Some say its not good because no nativ resolution and it not sale goof with 1080p.
So is it that bad playing 1080p on 1440p Monitor?

I find that DCS looks noticeably better at my monitor's native resolution. When I got my 1440 30" monitor, I discovered that I preferred to turn some graphics options down rather than play at 1080. 1080 content on a 1440 monitor looks blurry in a way that 1080 content on a 1080 monitor does not.

What graphics card do you have? I'd personally go with 1080p on a size of 27".  Anything above would definitely benefit from higher resolutions. I use a 3060Ti 8GB and 1080p with a 27" monitor and couldn't be happier.

Thx for answeres.

@Mik75
I have a RTX3080 and ryzen 5800X3D CPU.
So i guess i could play 1440p without much problems.

The thing is for some shooter games i get told you can spott better at distances at 1440p.
On DCS other hand the thing turned where you can spott better at 1080p.
So i guess i have to make decision what is more important to me.

But the answer from @Roosterfeet realy make me think i should go for native resolution.

@Mik75Do you play any kind of shooters or other games where you think the 27" seems maybe a little to big for? (How far do you sit from the Monitor?)
Some say you can already see pixels on that Monitor size at 1080p.

I sit arround 80cm away from my 24" Monitor.

Damn i wished Monitors would scale much better so we could just drop resolution.

In my experience spotting is easier at 1080 but cockpit instruments are easier to read at 1440. If your playing on a competitive multiplayer server with no labels or only dot labels then 1080 might be preferable. Single player, if you don't mind turning on labels once in a while (I have a key bound), you may prefer 1440. Also, you still get the large pixel spotting benefits if you play at 1080 on a 1440 monitor, it just doesn't look as nice as as it would if it were native resolution.

24" is still ok for 1080p, it's just at the limit where pixel size becomes dominant, which is perfect for spotting in your case.

Any bigger than 24" doesn't look good with 1080p, it becomes too rough. 27-32" are better with 1440p and eventually 4k

I recently created a topic on this subject, and searching here on the forum, I found this.

I also have a similar question. I'm building a new PC: i7 12700k, Gigabite B660m, 64gb, SSD m.2 NVMe.

I want to get a 32" monitor, 16:9, 1440p.

The question is the VGA I intend to buy, an RTX 4070 (not "ti"), will be able to handle flights on multiplayer servers above 60fps.

Reading various opinions on the forum, I started to open up more options, like keeping it in full HD 1080p, maybe 27" 16:9, or 29" 21:9 ultrawide (is the height of the 29" the same as a 24" 16:9?).

I have heard that what most influences FPS on servers is the CPU and not the GPU. So even if I win the lottery and buy an RTX 4090, I wouldn't guarantee having more than 60fps on the servers.

I would like to hear from you about it.

Thanks! Seeya!

Well this is no longer true. Version 2.9 just introduced a fix for this “dot” problem 👍
