predaeus Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Ok, finally it was my time to start the first single mission, switch off the 3 auto pilot shiny buttons, lift off to fly some turns around the FOB, before crashing into the ground. Yay, was that fun, the flight feeling is so great! Like someone else mentioned here, even the menu music is awesome. Great overall package so far ED, thanks for all the work you guys put into this! Now I have to wait for a new rig, so I can totally enjoy the experience...
GGTharos Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 switch off the 3 auto pilot shiny buttons You're doing it wrong ;) Leave those ON. ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
159th_Viper Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Listen to GG........;) She might Wallow like a Randy Rhino at first.......or so it will seem........but it will all click with Flight Time. DiabloSP Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 If you do that -> switch off the 3 auto pilot shiny buttons. ... It's normal to end like that -> crashing into the ground. GG is right.
EtherealN Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Let's put it like this: it is mandatory for the real Ka50 pilots to leave those three active. they are there for a reason. The same reason why an RL Gripen (or Eurofighter too, I expect) pilot leaves hid steering assist systems on - they make sure the bird is controllable. Only if you have a specific fault in the electronics that causes errors in those systems should you ever switch them off. In the sim or in a real thing. Dark-Light Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Aren't the pilots trained how to cope without ap?
GGTharos Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 They are; that isn't the point. All combat and most civilian helicopters that aren't really light have these sort of auto-modes, and you're supposed to fly with them on. Their purpose is to allow you to pay more attention to actual airmanship (and in combat, to the enemy, etc) rather than struggling to get your aircraft to fly straight. EtherealN Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 (edited) Extra important in the Ka50 compared to comparable helicopters too, since in the Ka-50 it's just you. In the Tiger, Ka-52, Mi-24, Mi-28, Cobra, Apache, Rooivalk, Mangusta, Littlebird, the armed version of the UH-60, fire support version of the Mi-8 and the Kawasaki OH-1 there's two crew. Pilot and weapons officer. In the Black Shark, there's just you. Thank the Gods that you don't have some electronic assists. :P In fact, even the cancelled prototype choppers like the RAH-66 Comanche, 56 Cheyenne and Bell 63 were two-seaters. So by comparison, not only the Gods are to be thanked, I'll thank Darwin too just to be on the safe side. :D Hell, even most transport choppers have two flight crew. Vesperatus Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 In the Black Shark, there's just you. Thank the Gods that you have some electronic assists. :P There, fixed it for you

GuntiNDDS Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 i got and started playing the game yesterday. i spent the last two weeks or so observing the forum and youtube videos, so i had quite a good idea on how to operate the helicopter upfront. i am by no means good at it yet, but i get how it works. i also didnt find the autopilot buttons hindering me. they work pretty good with the triming for me. only situations that i still have difficulties with are approaching a runway for landing correctly and manual hovering maneuvers. so far i am enjoying the game alot. its very immersive and the performance is better than expected. and thats from someone who hasnt flown flight simulators since f16-falcon and fighter bomber on the commodore amiga :D the only bad experience i had was with the dvd-rom it shipped on tho. out of the box it was unreadable and i had to clean it with glass cleaner to get my dvdrom reading it. (thats the german distribution version by koch media, btw)
lion737 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Aren't the pilots trained how to cope without ap? Before they don´t fly perfectly without AP they surely will not be aloud to use it ! (...would cost too many lives and money :D) I would do it the same way with the sim. It´s much easier to use the AP correctly if you know how to fly without.
glottis Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I would do it the same way with the sim. It´s much easier to use the AP correctly if you know how to fly without. I'm not sure that's a great way to do things... the dampening part of the autopilot is so essential in the KA-50 that flying without any autopilot at all is really an advanced, emergency-only skill. I can't really understand advising anyone to start with this.
AlphaOneSix Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 the autopilot is so essential in the KA-50 that flying without any autopilot at all is really an advanced, emergency-only skill. Very true. I can't really understand advising anyone to start with this. Nobody should. :joystick: :D
DocNobby Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 I can't really understand advising anyone to start with this. Well, maby starting to fly helis that way is a bit hard. I've been flying every heli sim I could get my hands on in the last 15 years and I must say, that I really enjoy flying the BS with AP off (for training). :joystick: I think it's good to know how this baby reacts without any automatic correction applied. When flying enroute in a mission I use full AP and in combat FD (I dont want to hold that trim button down all the time). It's just like when you bought a new car. It's good to know what you can do with it when ESP is off, so you know the Physical limitations. But while this is a personal preference its still a bit :poster_offtopic: Sooo... back on topic! I just wanted to chime in and say, that I really enjoy this great Simulation! :D Got the german version last friday. I've been reading the manual for the last two month waiting for the sim. Great job on the german manual btw.! Didn't have to look at it too often, but it's a really good read in my native language. The only shocker for me so far: Betty speaks german?! "Fahrwerk ausfahren" :animals_rooster: Feels somewhat "wrong"... But then again, I've seen there's a nice Bundeswehr skin.
Guest mich Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 Buying DCS:BH I was certain this will be a solid sim. And ED overdelivered. Fabulous game. I appreciate both the deep content and the quality of the software. Same goes for your constant support: posts on these forums, producer note movies and the patch being delivered for such a well-polished game. My only gripe is the manual, esp. the fact it has only russian cockpit illustrations. I still must appreciate its thoroughness though. I'm very happy with the way I've spent my money. Can't wait for ED's future projects. I'm sold on whatever you guys deliver :)
HansRoaming Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 For me the immersion and sense of achievement one gets when you learn something new is second to none in this sim. Am currently upgrading my PC to make BS better. ED have got my money for their future ground attack and close air support releases.

My sentiments entirely, I have already pre ordered the manual on Amazon, having a fantastic time learning the complexities of this sim, cant wait for future releases!!
