Made.In.China.00 Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Hello every one, this is my first thread, so, enjoy. Just found a very nice article about in game AI and would like to share it with everyone here. http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2009/03/05/how-ai-in-games-works/1 I've been playing for a week only and I already noticed that DCS's AI is not very smart. In the "on the other side" mission, the 2 SU-27 did nothing when 2 MI-24 shot down me and my 3 wingmen. (yes, I know I suck, but I'm still learning):music_whistling: Any way, I know this is because of the old engine and a new one will be out eventually. Here's the message for ED: PLEASE, MAKE IT PLANNING SYSTEM BASED!!! I've played The elder scroll 4 Oblivion which has planning system for AI and the NPCs are pretty smart. If I disarm them and take away their weapon, they would run to the nearest weapon and pick it up. If I steal all the food from someone's house, he would go out and buy food, if I steal his money as well, he would go hunting or stealing. Imagine a DCS world with that kind of AI! The GPGPU is interesting too. The current engine uses heavy script, which eats a lot of CPU power, and some of us have some good GPUs sitting there being bored. So PLEASE, CONSIDER GPGPU! If we want to make a huge battlefield with all kinds of units running around, GPGPU would be more than helpful. I don't know about you, but I can wait for another year or 2, maybe 3 just for these 2 features. Let me know what do you think.

Actually that's not really AI, that's a predetermined script or trigger. I do x to the mob, it goes and does y. More true AI like behaviour (cos true AI means a machine capable of thinking for themselves) can probably be seen in games such as Fear and the newer gen fps, where mobs semi-think for themselves about where you are and what type of cover to use, or to run. If it was AI, the mob would have considered whether to attack you at all, if so, probably planned an ambush or called in reinforcements, not rush at you waiting to be disarmed. But games like have what, maybe 6 enemies on screen (at the most) at once? Try doing that in a military sim where there may be scores of units that you'd have to account for. Putting aside the massive coding/development needed, I doubt your home pc would be capable of handling that.
CE_Mikemonster Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Good link mate and welcome to the forums! But you've mentioned the AI (have a search :S) and compared it to the logic system of an RPG. Duno where this discussion will lead but should be interesting :) CE_Mikemonster sat back in his chair. And lo, for it had begun.. Too many cowboys. Not enough indians. GO APE SH*T
Made.In.China.00 Posted March 7, 2009 Author Posted March 7, 2009 Actually that's not really AI, that's a predetermined script or trigger. Yes, I know we can't have real AI anytime soon. As the article I linked sais Well, in early 2008, IBM embarked on a project to digitally simulate the cerebral cortex of such a small mammal at the Thomas J Watson Research Center. The test used 8,192 processors and 2.8TB of memory on the Blue Gene-L supercomputer to simulate the 22 million neurons and 11 billion synapses found in the16cm2 cortical surface of a rabbit’s brain. So I'm talking about "fake AI" here. The goal of this kind of AI is to make NPCs a little bit human like. In DCS it mean things like using terrain for cover instead of just stay there and waiting to be shot. And NOT to land on top of another heli! (I saw this somewhere in this forum)
