Abkhaz War and other SP missions by uhoh7

Recommended Posts

I really enjoy comments, and am combining my missions into a single thread to keep things simple.

Abkhaz War series:

1) ABKHAZIA

We have been deployed to Abkhazia at the request of the separatist government. The command post in Sida has reported movements of Georgian forces on the other side of the river. These are likely just maneuvers, but nevertheless you will patrol fully armed from our FARP to Sida, which is 6km north of the river bordering Abkhazia and Georgia.

This show of force should quiet them down.

2) OCHAMCHIRA

The Georgian strike on Gali has devastated our forward line. We have regrouped at Ochamchira. Refugees are on the road from Gali and our reserve forces will take up positions to hold Ochamchira. We hope the Georgians will delay their attack till morning.

Your mission is to provide cover for our deployment and the Refugees on the road. The situation is fluid and we must be ready for anything. Scouting forces are expected to be active with SAM capacity.

Use extreme caution and stay low.

3) KOCHARA

As you know, Gali and Ochamchira fell yesterday in heavy fighting. Under cover of darkness, Georgian forces have advanced to the outskirts of our airfield near Dranda, west of Ochamchira. However the Georgian supply lines are stretched and they have not had time to secure their flanks.

Extreme weather moved in this morning, and we do not believe Georgians are risking their helicopters in these conditions. Our FARP and special forces units in Kochara have been overlooked. It is crucial we act before the Georgians can consolidate.

You will launch from Kochara and with our special forces, cut the Georgian supply lines at the crossroads to the west. The crossroads is defended by 1 T72 and assorted vehicles. You must clear this force so our BMPs can occupy the crossroads.

The Georgians will respond to this attack. There is a FARP just west of the crossroads, and we will have this ready for rearming when safe from counterattacks.

Expect further instructions...

Another note: the bridge, 3km east of crossroads is important to prevent counter attack on crossroads from Ochamchira. You are tasked to do this in comms, but if you are having trouble living, you can take this out first, then deal with forces at crossroads. It's wild to watch the wind working in this mission, it will flap your blades if they are stopped, and tonite I watched it take the smoke from a dying MI8--looked like 60 knots. Sometimes the lazer works and sometimes not in these conditions.

4) SUKHUMI

As you know, Georgian forces had reached the outskirts of our airfield at Dranda after taking Gali and Ochamchira. Yesterday in extreme weather, we cut their supply lines west of Ochamchira at the Kochara crossroads. However by evening they secured the airfield at Dranda and are resupplying by air and sea.

This morning they are attacking Sukhumi with warships, speedboats, and helicopter support---in part we believe to cover ongoing resupply at Dranda airfield.

We have a little surprise for them. You will launch from FARP1 armed with KH25 anti-ship missles and attack the Georgian Navy. Your mission is to first eliminate all threats to Sukhumi from the sea, and then be ready to support our two T55 tank columns, North, and South which will move in to secure the port when the coast is clear.

Be sure you are familiar with KH25 deployment.

1. Lock target

2. switch laser to designate mode (The switch under the HSI)

3. select the KH-25ML

4. hit the lock target again (the laser is now firing for 60 second 30 second cool down time) you will see in the hud that the Kh-25 locks onto the laser.

5. Fire weapon

(TY to Cat101 for KH25 instructions)

5) DRANDA

While we took on the Georgian Navy this morning at Sukhumi, resupply at Dranda airbase continued. Dranda is now heavily fortified with strong SAM defense. Georgians retain over 20 T-72s, while as you know, we lost all T-80s at Gali and must rely on our T-55 battalions.

We plan to hit Dranda moving, 1) southwest from your FARP at Ganakhieba, and 2) south with one column from Merkheuli and another directly from Sukhumi, both using the coast road for their final assault.

However we suspect Georgians are aware of our forces at Ganakhieba and may try to prempt our strike with air and ground forces.

Sweep the approaches to Ganakhieba and do what you can to reduce SAM threats at Dranda. Then move to support our Columns coming down from the north. FARP2 at Octomberi is available if FARP1 becomes unusable.

It's time to kick the Georgians out of Abkhazia!!!

Success in Dranda:

Are these for Russian or English version of Blackshark??

Hi Crazy,

I built them on the english (though I own both), but I would be very surprised if they did not play fine on the russian version.

My other two SP missions, not part of the Abkhaz war:

FOOTHOLD

Georgian fortification of Mestia, above the Inguri Dam, has been proceeding for several days, and now includes operational FARPS. Our leadership regards this act as a provocation to which we must respond.

Phase one: clear Mestia so MI-26s can land forces to establish a bridge head. One KA-27 will be watching for any forces on the pass.

Mestia is defended by 5 AA batteries, possibly a Mobile SAM, and a T-55 is reported near the upper bridge. We expect the initial counterattack to be fairly light Our landing forces will embark on BMPs carried by the MI26s to secure a hamlet below Mestia and establish a line of defense. Additional forces will be landing as conditions permit. If we gain control of Mestia you can refuel and rearm, then proceed to the hamlet down valley to protect the BMPs

Expect enemy gunships to be active, and a heavy counter attack is expected later.

If the initial BMP force is blocked in route to the hamlet, you must destroy the vehicles to clear the way for reinforcements.

CONTAIN UKRAINE

Ukrainian forces are advancing on the hilltop village of Verkhnebakskij, a crucial crossroads. Scramble to support our columns as they try to secure the village and control the northern approaches.

The Ukrainians have numerous advanced ground vehicles purchased in the wake of the western economic collapse. They are supported by MI-24v gunships which have been sighted enroute. You have three farps for rearm and repair. Expect wind and turbulence.

Good Luck

PS MI28s are standing by in case your wingmen are taken out.

SWITCHBACK SP mission.

Brief:

For the past seven days, Russian forces have been pouring into South Ossetia, according to local sources, though Russians deny this and bad weather prevents satellite surveillance. The Georgian defense pact with Turkey has been triggered, and allied Turkish and Georgian forces are fortifying the border with South Ossetia.

The main thrust is expected thorugh Gori as in August 2008, however this morning we lost all contact with observers in Oni, on the western border of South Ossetia. Gori is now heavily defended, so there is a chance the Russians will move through Oni, using the mining roads.

Since Oni has not been heard from, this possibility is increasingly likely, and we are moving to forces to the town above Lake Terjoli, Tkibuli, and sending artillery to the village on the lake itself in case the Russians decide to come over the pass from Shaori Lake.

Our units:

Wolfpack, our main battle group, equipped with leopard tanks is now in route to Lake Terjoli and will continue at least to Tkibuli.

Puppydog, our artillery units, are now nearing Lake Terjoli, ahead of Wolfpack.

Hounddog, a light attack force is now crossing the pass west of the lake and will proceed up the valley to Tkibuli.

Bulldog, consisting of two CH47s and special forces units is in route to reinforce the light defense forces already present in Tkibuli, and will be standing by in the unlikely event we need to evacuate Tkibuli.

Cobra is your support now fueling on the new FARPs at the south end of Lake Terjoli consisting of two AH1Ws. They will be standing by in case things take a turn for the worse.

Your mission: fly to waypoint 2, then proceed up the valley to Tkibuli and provide security for Hounddog and Wolfpack.

ScreenShot_075.jpg

ScreenShot_150.jpg

ScreenShot_170.jpg

WARNING: create an allied pilot, preferably Turkish, in your logbook, and use him, or you will accused of fratracide.

This is a good one.....

v3 Cobras take off and have a bit more fuel, comms shortened to 10sec, enemy heli AI changed to "average"--they are still plenty dangerous. If you want to tip the scales more in your favor, open up the mission and give your cobras ATGMs, but make sure they're not overloaded--you'll need to reduce fuel possibly.

uhoh, I just attemped your first scenario (Abkhazia), but was shot down before I got to do much. From what I saw, however, it was fairly impressive, a lot going on all around you. One critique, however:

***SPOILER***

I like how a pair of MiG-25's were scrambled for air support. I was confused, however, by why it was taking them so long to reach the battle. Then I saw that they were flying all the way at 500kmh (and at about 10 degrees AoA, struggling comically to maintain altitude at such low speed). Perhaps 1000kmh-1500kmh would be more appropriate?

ty slug, good point and apreciate the input. I will fix that and put up an abkhazia5.

don't feel bad if you get killed a bunch of times before you finnally fly and survive. In all those missions there are things coming AFTER you, hehe, in the air and on the ground. But in reality the threats are not huge, usually one strela SAM per column, moving with it.

With the Hinds, send your wingman after them when he sees them (try to be sure it's a hind not an SU 25), get him out ahead and then see if he attracts SAMS---take them out before they get him if possible. If you are not within 2.5 k of tanks and your laser goes off you better run and do some gentle zig zaging, the hinds are gonna fire, but they often miss.

When you want to get them, hit lock multiple times till you have them, be sure you are in AA and manual, then fire two missles, one right after the other. This is far more effective than single missles which only hit 30% of the time, with 2 you get about 80% kills.

The forward farp will last about 15-20 minutes before it gets taken out and you have to rearm further back where you took off.

all the best.

NEW SP MISSION: SEQUEL TO SWITCH BACK

ZHOETIBRIEF.jpg

Orkhvi

As we feared, Russian forces have poured out of South Ossetia via Oni. Yesterday they occupied the villages around Terjoli Lake. Based on the road system we believe this large force constitutes their Left flank. This force has crossed the pass west of the lake, and based on the shelling of villages on the outskirts of Kutasi, we believe the city itself is their goal today.

To make matters worse the Russian Right flank, is preparing to come down the valley west of Shaori Lake in heavy force. We are in the process of evacuating this valley, and have setup a rearguard in Orkhvi Village to try to hold the valley.

The only blessing is the heavy overcast which precludes fixed wing air support.

You will takeoff from Kutasi and 1) take out the bridge at Nabslevi, then 2) support the rear guard at Orkhvi.

Dingo will provide FAC below bridge, and the Leopard tank column Foxguard will brief you on the situation at Orkhvi.

Today, Blackshark, it all depends on you. Your wingman is down for repairs.

Next in the switchback series, this mission follows a victory in Switchback, while Orkhivi, above, follows a defeat.

Shaori

Yesterday we stopped the Russian onslaught at Tkibuli. As darkness fell, we consolidated at the hamlet halfway up Lake Shaori. During the night the Russians moved forward again and we believe they have scouts in the Villiage at the north end of the lake.

Wolfpack will advance on these positions shortly, with your support.

The skies have cleared and we will have two flights of F16s, one for ground attack and the other for CAP. We expect Russian air activity.

Wolfpack, primary attack column.

Lancer, MRLS fire support.

Viperone F16 ground attack.

Snakeoil F16 CAP.

Good Luck.

Cool, I've setup the Abkhaz War as a 5 phase campaign (very easy with the campaign editor! but I suppose I would need to put victory conditions to advance or repeat mission) and It's going the next thing I fly! Thanks!

Would you write a little "campaign description" to introduce the conflict to players? Also, a tactical map in the briefing screen for each mission would be nice!

Also you may want to put briefings text in the same "form" (homogeneity), and release it as a campaign (I suppose a .zip with all the .miz missions plus .cmp and maybe a picture for the campaign).

Sorry man, too many requests, but it's seems your missions and the conflict have potential to be a cool campaign.

Anyway, good work!

PD: Also, what about releasing multiplayer version of them?

I'm looking forward to hearing how you guys like the various missions.

Feel free to tweak them in anyway you like.

To really make a campaign that uses the campaign system in DCS I think I'd need another 10 missions in the Abkhaz scenerio but if you would like to set them up that way, go for it.

You can play them in MP with a few simple changes to the player flight--- I think some guys are using contain ukraine now.

They could use some maps, and of course many other small touches-- targets in the abris etc.

IF you manage to live through any of them, you are doing very well.

The emphasis is on flying in chaotic situations, not the carefully planned sort of thing a nato type scenario like Mbot's great missions present, but, hot-headed scenarios like the georgian war, where emotion trumps preperation, and the results are not pretty, hehe. You have the feeling of being overrun quite a bit, and in many of the missions if you don't stop the other side pretty fast, you will be. To acomplish that the work load is high. On top of that some have some real weather challanges. Foothold is challanging, and Kochara is out of hand weatherwise.

If you stick with them you get good at dealing with enemy helos and dodging those BMP missles--that's for sure.

One real eye-opener is the research i did on Google earth, where you can see thousands of local photos if you have panoramio enabled. The pictures from abkhazia today will drop your jaws. Sukhumi is a real mess--- you can see the war damage at the harbour and the photos of buildings shot to pieces and over grown public parks are wild. I wish ED had populated the map just a bit further east, to include South Oseetia and Gori and the Roki tunnel.

I realised a few days ago, that in Orkhvi, I have the russians shelling Gelati, a unesco historical site where David the builder is buried. Monte Casino all over again. And those little villages high in the mountains with their little thousand year old towers cowering under 16,000 ft peaks---well that place is gorgeous.

Next Switchback SP mission:

Meant to follow a victory (or extreme frustration) in Shaori

AMBROLAURI

This morning we took the hamlet on the north end of Shaori Lake in heavy fighting. This afternoon, we will seek to capitalize and catch the Russians before they can consolidate at Ambrolauri, the ancient village on the Rioni river just north and below us.

Wolfpack will approach on the narrow road down the valley and if we are caught there, it’s all over. Latest intel reports at least 3 T80s guarding the southern approach, with several BMPs. You need to get down there, find a firing position, and take them out before they can fire on Wolfpack.

If we can take Ambrolauri, all Russian forces to the east will be cutoff from the main bridgehead at Oni. Once we have the town we will be able to stage an assault on Oni and throw them back into South Ossetia.

Wolfpack will provide FAC and Straycat is now orbiting. Your wingman is down, so do not waste your missles.

Once again your role is crucial.

STRAYCAT SU25T standing by.

My first night mission! Follows victory (or tearing your hair out) at Ambrolauri

Achara

Late this afternoon our combined Georgian and Turkish forces followed the bloody victory at Lake Sharoi and took Ambrolauri, the ancient village on the Rioni river below Oni, where the Russians entered Georgia from South Ossetia two days ago.

As night fell, intel reports at least one tank Battalion of the 205th Russian MRB is now cutoff in the valleys between Ambrolauri and the city of Kutasi. Our fortification of Ambrolauri continues, but we need time to prepare for the Russian efforts to restore their link with Oni.

Local reports indicate the tank columns have turned around and are headed back from the valleys below. If we cannot stop them it is unlikely that Ambrolauri can hold against simultaneous attacks from Oni and the lower Valleys.

Every minute we delay the advance of the battalion below they grow weaker, and our bridgehead grows stronger. Intel has just identified two key bridges below. If we can destroy them, the Russians will be delayed 6 hours at least, possibly an entire day.

Your mission is to take out these bridges, targets 1 & 2 on your PVI-800. Your key waypoints are 4 and 7. You must hit these waypoints exactly. Both are protected firing positions on the bridges, and we have FAC in place, Dingo on bridge one and Popeye on bridge two. Use the valleys and ridges to hide your presence in route. Lynx one will provide illumination at bridge 1 and Lynx two will do the same at bridge 2. In addition Wildcat and Ripsaw will attack any sighted Russian forces during each attack, and attempt to draw fire.

The firing postions are about 3km from the bridges and we advise you shoot from that distance, but if you can’t hit them, you will have to run in. Be sure to wait for the flares.

Wolfpack, our tank battalion at Ambrolauri, where your farp is located.

Dingo and Popeye, FAC

Lynx one and two, SU25s to provide illumination.

Wildcat and Ripsaw, F16s for CAS.

v3 a number of small tweaks. You should see less studder at waypoint four and seven---flares may come a bit sooner. It's quite something to see the stars and the windows in the mountain cabins twinkling in the NVG, and the tight valleys will keep you wide awake.

If you get both bridges and return alive, you've won.

Next SWITCHBACK SP mission, designed to follow the ACHARA night mission.

TSESI

Our night attacks on the Russian Forces cutoff in the western valleys have delayed their efforts to reestablish supply lines with Oni for several hours. Intel reports that sometime around 2am MI26 helicopters managed to supply these forces with bridging materials, fuel and ammunition. In the meantime we have brought in additional forces for our bridgehead at Ambrolauri.

It is now 7am and the moment of truth is at hand. Spotters report Russian scouts with BMPs have been seen only a few kilometers to the east, probing from Oni. Our perimeters east and west are now in place and we expect a simultaneous attack shortly.

Your FARP in Ambrolauri is highly exposed, but we have another just below Shaori Lake up and running. MI24 gunships were sighted refueling at Oni 30 minutes ago.

There is one crucial bridge 7KM towards Oni which, if blocked, could prevent the Russians from hitting us from both sides at once, but it is protected by manpads and possibly soon by approaching Hinds as well. Your waypoint 2 on the ABRIS, is a position from which you may be able to fire on the bridge, but you may be able to find a better one once you are up. The eastern perimeter is guarded by a chokepoint where the canyon narrows.

To the west, the valley is wider and we expect the Russians to throw everything they have from the forces which have been cutoff at our perimeter. You can expect comms when the attack begins.

The fixed-wing air enviorment is extremely dangerous and there has been heavy attrition on boths sides in the past 24 hours. Roughshod, one brave Georgian SU25T is standing by for CAS. The western Russian forces have had their Strelas rearmed, and of course their BMPs will fire ATGMs at any helicopter they spot.

Our goal is simple: HOLD AMBROLAURI!

2 new SP missions in the Switchback series. These are meant to follow Orkhivi, which presumes a defeat in the initial "Switchback" mission.

Argveta

Yesterday, in Orkhivi, we held the Russians west of Lake Terjoli by blocking the direct routes to Kutasi.

The Russians resupplied their forces at Lake Terjoli during the night, and this morning they moved south down the pass road in overwhelming strength. Below Lake Terjoli this route branches into 4 roads, all heading south to the main highway from Kutasi to Tiblisi, which runs east-west in a huge valley.

At this moment, Wolfpack and Hounddog have left their defensive positions below Lake Terjoli, and are retreating south toward the main highway. Their route is not yet clear. For reference we have designated the roads as 1 through 4, with road one on the west, closest to Kutasi.

Whether the Russians intend to consolidate below the lake or move immediately to the main highway is also not clear, but we can expect the latter.

Gazelle, our Leopard reserves in Kutasi are in route to the intersection of road 1 and the main highway, in order to hold the Russians in the event they plan to move directly on the city.

Farp 2 is located near the base of road 3 and is ready for rearming.

Your mission is to 1) support Gazelle and be sure the approaches to Kutasi are secure, and 2) to support the retreat and regrouping of Wolfpack and Hounddog.

Weather is clear and calm, we expect intense air activity.

Wolfpack, our Leopard tank battalion

Hounddog, Georgian MRB, with American equipment.

Hippo, artillery.

Croc, MI24 CAS

Harvest, F5E CAS

Overlord, SU17 CAS

ARGVETA.jpg

While I'm not using more units than other missions in argveta, FPS may be an issue. I think it has to do with the map in this location--I have set the mission at high noon in clear weather to help, but you may need to turn down some settings. v2: One russian ka50 was empty, added a few comms.

ZESTAFONI

The Russian advance into Georgia, via Oni and Lake Terjoli, continues, and the situation is now desperate. Yesterday the Russian came down to the south from Lake Terjoli in heavy force (Argveta). While we have so far held the approach to Kutasi, to the west, our forces have been routed from the approaches to the lake and have now regrouped at the town of Zestafoni. Our front is concentrated to the south of the river running through the town. The road to Tiblisi will be wide open if we cannot hold here.

A major weather front has moved in, with high winds and heavy overcast, complicating intelligence.

Your mission is CAS for our front line. Proceed from your FARP to FARP2 just south of Zestafoni, and hold for an update from control.

Wolfpack, our Leopard tank battalion reinforced with Georgian units.

Hippo, artillery above Zestafoni.

Roughshod, SU25T air support.

Croc, Gerogian MI24 air support.

If you can hold the Russians north of the river at Zestafoni, you have won the mission.

ZESTAFONI.jpg

You may have slow FPS at takeoff, but this should improve as you move into position, below the cloud layer.

Both of these missions are quite "winable", though it may take you a few tries.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi,

thank's a lot for this great series.

One big wish:

I found out that helos are very hardware-demanding.

can you perhaps tune down the hardware-demands (and also the demands for the player) somehow or can you tell me, how i can easily do it myself: making a light version of the series with less (enemy) helos and/or ground vehicles.

Open the mission up with the Mission Editor and edit it that way. Just be careful that you don't edit out the story line if you know what I mean.

@uhoh: is that possible without editing the story line?

Is there a list where I can delete the enemy helos somewhere?

Hi Oho. Which mission is giving you problems?

The first thing to look at is the weather. If you move to clear weather it will help. You also want to be sure your water is normal and distance is medium.

Besides that, just open the mission like dusty says, hit "Units list" and find the enemy helos. Click show on map, then delete.

It won't really hurt the story line--you might win easier and won't recieve some comms, but the fundamentals should be the same.

One other note about the weather: the closer you are to the overcast the worse it gets, drop down and the frames should get alot better.

I hope some of you guys will recount your adventures in these missions--I'd love to hear some detailed impressions of various missions (don't worry, you'll never hurt my feelings).

all the best

thanks again for your great series uhoh. They are very well made - better than the stock IMO. I still have a problem with ORKHVI. Last message I get is contact from group NN in the village and that in about 5 km there is the enemy but there is none when I follow the valley. I fly along the valley, but the enemy collumn only shows up after I return from the lake or the enemy FARP with the mi-helicopter

Hi Oho,

In Orkivi: first take out the bridge AND the BMPS next to it, then follow waypoints up the bigger valley. If you can do that I think all triggers will fire.

all the best,

Firstly great missions UHOH7, they are much appreciated :)

I have a question regarding re-arming with KH25ML in the mission Sukhumi2. At the start of the mission I am already armed with the KH25, but I have no option in the payloads screen to re-arm with this weapon should I miss first time out.

How do you add the KH25ML to the payloads availlable via the ingame ground support re-arm menu?
