GuntiNDDS Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 hi, today i discovered a weired graphical glitch. its hard to see from the attached screenshot, but very apparent when moving the view around. the water is floating guessed 10 meters below the ground and bridge. in other words, between the water and the ground there is a 10m high gap of nothing. updated the graphics card drive, but didnt solve the issue. i have a 8800gts. any ideas ??
sohei Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Perhaps ED modelled global warming as well? A small pie is soon eaten
Boberro Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 It is issue, same in LO. Simple we have to deal wit it. I never seen any fix for this. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
GuntiNDDS Posted March 10, 2009 Author Posted March 10, 2009 well, thats quite a downer then, and very huge bug in my oppinion. ruins immersion when flying over water and eliminates the visual feedback when trying to fly under a bridge or something. i hope they will fix this in a patch. is there really nothing i can do about it ? :(
Frakin Toasters Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Yeah actually i noticed this, but i wouldn't have described it as you have. Not sure if it's even the same problem. But when you're flying along over water, it's like the water is stationary below you, but everything else is moving. So when you fly from water to land, the water seems to fly 'under' the shore. It's quite odd and makes flying over water really hard at times, as you have no reference for speed or altitude
EtherealN Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 What detail settings do you have on the water? I've never noticed anything that seems like this but I haven't been looking either. Nate--IRL-- Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Basically the water is rendered as one polygon at sea level throughout the game world, this leads to problems where you have large open expanses of water inland at higher levels above sea level. What you are seeing is a hole in the terrain down to the sea texture on the polygon at sea level. Ideally these holes should have their own sea textures and polygons, but ED for whatever reason decided not to do this. Evilducky Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Sorry to dig this up, but this problem has not bothered me until last night when came to land on a FARP that was next to the lake. This water problem makes it very hard to come to a landing when this is what you see. =P Hopefully ED will do something about this :(
Mustang Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 As Bobbero said, this is a legacy issue thats been brought over from the LockOn engine, don't think this will ever be fixed.
Evilducky Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 I dont ever remember seeing this with lockon. Im gonna have to go re-install it and see now.
joey45 Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 .....Ideally these holes should have their own sea textures and polygons, but ED for whatever reason decided not to do this. Nate you would of needed a better pc if they did. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Evilducky Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Well Ill be damned.. i guess I never noticed it because I don't fly that close to the lakes. The airports are always away from them, or near the ocean which isn't affected. I really think they should look into this as you can place FARPS any were you want and if placed near a lake, it makes it tough to judge alt.

Also for laughs, in LockOn check the lake near the Krasnodar airfields, the height/surface perception over that lake has killed me many times in the past :D
CAT_101st Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 I am hoping it is fixed in the next game engin that ED is working on for A-10 Home built PC Win 10 Pro 64bit, MB ASUS Z170 WS, 6700K, EVGA 1080Ti Hybrid, 32GB DDR4 3200, Thermaltake 120x360 RAD, Custom built A-10C sim pit, TM WARTHOG HOTAS, Cougar MFD's, 3D printed UFC and Saitek rudders. EtherealN Posted May 12, 2009 Posted May 12, 2009 Cat, the engine is being incrementally updated as part of the regular development process, afaik. A-10C's engine will not be "new". I think I have heard mentions of a new engine being under development or prototyping, but I am unsure of whether that came from anyone official or if it was just wishful thinking from a fellow user that has somehow morphed in my memory. A final note on that though: a new flight engine does not mean a new graphics engine, necessarily. I am unsure of the exact structure between the two in LockOn and DCS so I am not authoritative, but it would (as an example) be theoretically possible for A10C to have a brand new flight engine (or "flight model") without that necessarily touching the graphics. Many payware Flight Simulator X 3rd party aircraft include separately developed flight engines that get plugged in for that aircraft specifically. But as for what holds true for DCS, I don't know since I don't have source code access and, well, to be quite honest I probably wouldn't understand the source code either. (My programming skills don't go further than me making some simple command-line calculator applications for UNIX :P ) Just wanted to highlight that "the engine" can refer to several things in a product like DCS, and that making a brand new one of either is a big job.
