When I was waiting for DCS:BS to come out, I would watch, and re-watch the Producer Notes and the SimHQ movies over and over. One thing I noted that I was really excited about was the little details in the airfields such as the taxiway markers. But I have not seen anything like that at any of the airfields so I thought perhaps you had to put them in using the editor, but I could not find the objects there either.... anyone know how they got the details in the airfields like that?

The additional detail of the airfields was being done by a 3rd party, but unfortunately, he was unable to complete the work to the point we could include it in the shipped product. I have been in contact with him recently and very much hope he can complete his work at some point and release it as a mod. Both he, and with Eagle's direct support, spent a lot of time on it; it would be a shame to see it go to waste.

I assume this mod would be one that would have to be purchased?

I doubt it would be a pay for addon. Good to hear its still in the pipes, such details would really add to the sim's immersion given how close to the ground you are in a helo. I think improved textures where also part of this? They impressed me as much as the extra airfield detail.

If it was to be just part of DCS, why not delivering it as a DCS upgrade (patch) instead of a mod? mod's are cool but as time passes and some of them get to be de facto standard, installing the game or fixing problems is a usually a long and complicated process.

^^ because then there is the issue of ownership rights and support.

If a 3rd party develop's and releases something, a 3rd party addon in this case, even if ED encourage and support it fully, it would be a lot more complicated to "take ownership" .. if it was released in an official patch or even as part of the full game release, then they are selling a 3rd party addon, which breaches their own licensing.

...much easier for everyone if it was to remain a seperate 3rd party addon I believe...that way the boundry's of what is free, and what is a commercial product are not confused.

..my thoughts anyway

I don't think that addon being released by ED makes it "theirs", hence no copyright problems. It should be no problem as long as the addon maker agrees with ED to distribute his work in a patch(considering he's not willing to sell it). Many companies distribute user generated content(maps, vehicles, textures) in their patches, heck even one of my maps integrated into a Red Orchestra patch without any fuzz :)

The maker of the mod would have to sign papers giving unlimited license without compensation to ED - since it's an international product, Matt and crew may not want to spring for the lawyer to come up with the script that will cover all bases.

Also, as a mod ED will not be responsible for you breaking your system with it. :P While it would be very unlikely to break stuff, there can still be a pretty subtantial cost to be found in testing it for an official release. I can see why some producers would feel it's worth the risk and why others would not.
