CopyConstructor Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 On my system, all screens outside the simulation have just white backgrounds! ( See attachment ). I have reinstalled the whole game, but that changed noting. I guess think it's a LUA related bug, but could not figure what's going wrong in detail. Temporarily, I've renamed the background images, at least, I can see the text now. on a black background. This must be concerned with any previous installation. I have no Problems with other games or apps. Any suggestions?
splashman Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Most probably you have an ATI graphics card and you installed CAT 9.1 or later. This is a known issue. Disable Catalyst AI in the 3D settings of the Catalyst Control Center or, if nothing else helps, revert back to 8.12. i7 2600K - 8GB - Win7/64 - Radeon R9 280 / 3GB
Savva Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 (edited) 1. Disable Catalyst AI - don't help 2. Install NEW 9.2 Cat - don't help 3. Try to find and download 8.12 - eeeeee hard job... ^) upd. ^) Cat 8.12 don't install. ^))) lol Edited March 17, 2009 by Savva
hyperfighter Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 1. 3. Try to find and download 8.12 - eeeeee hard job... ^) upd. ^) Cat 8.12 don't install. ^))) lol 3 isnt hard at all go to the ati site, and do your thing (assuming u know how to get the latest drivers from that site) in the screen where u download the new drivers there should be a link to previous catalyst versions.... try clicking that link > for radeon hd4800 series use link below http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista32.aspx
CopyConstructor Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 known "issue"? If this is "known", - why is it neither printed on on the game package in system requirements? - why does no other game have this issue? If you ask me, If I had the source code of the starter app, I would program a workaround in less then 1 day! So, for this game a older driver version is "required", and if I want to play another game, I have to reinstall the newer one, because it's more optimized and has less other bugs??? NOT AT ALL!
JaBoG32_Prinzartus Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Any update on this? I have a similar issue, although my screen does not even show the buttons. It is completely blank. EtherealN Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 CopyConstructor, I've seen many Radeon owners mention that the newer drivers cause problems for quite a lot of games, so it would not appear to be DCS-centric. Dusty Rhodes Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 I used the 8.12's on my 1900 XTX (Prior to the new rig) and they were rock solid in Black Shark and performance was pretty decent. As I understand it, the new drivers that are causing problems after the 8.12's aren't just causing problems with Black Shark but with other games also. Go with what works. GD Mast Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 I have a ATI card with the latest drivers and I get the white main screen too. This is the first time that there's a problem. All other games and programs work fine. I hope there's a fix for this. GD Mast
EtherealN Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 For now, the fix would appear to be the 8.12 drivers, if you have had no success in disabling Catalyst AI. (Do that first.) I do not know if the upcoming patch fixes the issues for newer ATI drivers, but the problem is known. Dusty Rhodes Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 (edited) From the sounds it sounds to be on the driver/ATI end and maybe not ED since it isn't just germain to Black Shark. GD Mast Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I don't know...? I just went to the multiplayer main screen and that is fine. Then I go back to the other main screen and it's white like before. GD Mast
EtherealN Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 GD Mast, they are different because they are in different executables. Multiplayer moves directly into dcs.exe, whereas singleplayer first loads launcher.exe, which after you have done all your selections and setups terminates and calls dcs.exe with the parameters you have set (like the mission to load and so on). This problem is within launcher.exe so it'll only appear in the singleplayer screen. So once again, the workaround at this time is to first disable Catalyst AI, and if that does not work you can change to the 8.12 driver package, which is older but has solved the problem for almost everyone that has had it. Please remember, when asking for assistance, it is a lot easier to give it to you if we have as full an understanding of your system as possible; processor, RAM amount, graphics card, driver versions, operating system and so on and so forth. Dusty Rhodes Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Sorry I don't subscribe to disabling something to get something to work becuase to disable something means your missing something that you could use. Roll back to the 8.12, stable drivers and have it all. EtherealN Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 (edited) Well, there would seem to be reasons to chuck it off anyhow, since it by design appears to have a CPU overhead which might be non-fun for such a CPU-intensive application as DCS. It basically analyses textures and such - on the CPU - and attempts to optimize them. I am very doubtful that there is any real gain in doing so in DCS, since it would seem smarter to just let the GPU (which isn't exactly under a massive workload anyhow) run the textures and not bother the CPU where it isn't needed. Would be interested to see some proper performance tests for those who have AI actually working with DCS. So far I haven't heard of any, but that might well be a case of a silent majority as is common to a board like this. The other aspect of Catalyst AI is application-specific optimizations done over at ATI's end. Basically, the driver can notice that you're playing Far Cry 2 and tweak itself to settings that ATI have decided works better for that specific game. As far as I know they have not done any such optimizations for Black Shark - if they have they should start with helping out to make the thing work at all... So between offloading the CPU and not getting any driver-level optimizations anyhow, I don't really se a reason to leave it on anyhow for DCS. BUT on the other hand, if a newer driver works as long as you have the Catalyst AI off, the general improvements introduced with the newer driver might lead to better overall performance than an older driver where you are able to have it on.
