It's a general DCS thing. If "Easy comms" is disabled in gameplay options, you can use comms command (default "\") only on the ground and with canopy open, because it kind-of "simulates" pilot shouting rather than using his radio.

In order to communicate in air, you need to use "Push to Talk" command ("Alt+\" by default). Assuming you previosly turned on your radio in the first place and set channel/frequency correctly.

Nothing to it. Main thing is you need to assign a radio push to talk. Many careers do not require setting up radio other specifying what channel to use

How do you work this then if im only in an instant action or just in missions?
Which module? And do yourself a favour, get VoiceAttack and then the free VAICOM community plugin for VA. Now you can talk to AI and ATC in DCS.

No questions are stupid, answers on the other hand...
VoiceAttack can be purchased through Steam or VoiceAttack.com, VAICOM can be downloaded from Github, and both has Discord channels. IF you decide to give them a try, feel free to ask for help. And I'd suggest you actually read through the VAICOM manual, which is very good, to see what to expect, and gives pretty good step by step instructions. In both Discords there are always people willing to help!
Cheers!

EDIT: Which module?!

Interesting. But how do you do that without looking like a moron by the rest of the household?
Voice attack for setting and VAICOM for the ai talk?  Sorry I did not know this. Just wondering how this work.

Well, depends of the household!
I use ordinary VoiceAttack commands for the cockpit, map, other DCS things, like bringing up the controls indicator, mission briefing, message history (with Taz1004's "No Pause" mod. And VAICOM for ATC, tanker, AWACS, JTAC and flight/wingman commands. VAICOM uses VoiceAttack as a gateway to Microsoft Speech Recognition for the speech-to-text, that are translated to commands and passed back to VAICOM, which then sends the commands to DCS. VAICOM does not use keystrokes nor the radio menu, and you can hide the menu all together, with the text on screen and disable your own pilots voice for immersion.
Ask away!
Cheers!

Sorry, module wise do you mean which aircraft? If so i have the f18c and the F15e. It was for both. Ive since setup the comms1 and comms2 to the hotas throttle

For a beginner that sounds way over my head haha

Right! Yeah, I was referring to your OP. You've fixed your issues? Like written above, you need to use the PTTs for transmitting on the correct frequencies. Better get used to not using the default comms menu key, "\" for all modules. And I suggest you turn off "Easy comms" under the general settings, as it only seems to invoke confusion and issues, and is probably soon to be deprecated.
