Several new questions about the Hog`s systems:

1. Compared to the A-10A what`s the improvement in A-10C in terms of increased targeting and attacking range? AFAIK the Maverick missile is A-10`s longest range weapon. A-10A is using the missile`s seeker to find/lock the target, is there any change in A-10C? The latter is using more sufisticated sensors - FLIR and a charged coupled divice (CCD-TV) which I guess will increase the range a target is found but will it increase it enough to allow firing the missile at max range?

2. What`s the zoom of the targeting systems in A-10C compared to the A-10A?

3. This one is related to 1: what`s the role of the FLIR and CCD-TV in locking the target and receiving LA? I mean do you still need the missile seeker to lock the target to be able to fire it or we can lock it with the more powerful FLIR and fire the missile before its seeker has a lock (presuming for instance the target is too small for the seeker to lock it but is in max range of the missile)?

I'm not sure on the specifics, however I know the A-10 C is a glass cockpit modernized version of the A-10...

Current Sims:

DCS Black Shark, Falcon 4.0, X-Plane 9, Steel Beasts Pro PE, IL-2 1946, ArmA 2, FSX, Rise of Flight, EECH, Harpoon 3 ANW, CSP

The A-10C can attack from maximum seeker lock range now, because it can find targets easier thanks to the targeting pod and datalink. While it is easy to find targets visually in LOMAC, this is not the case in reality - so the difference between LO's A-10A and A-10C in attack range with maverick will probably be negligible.

On the other hand the A-10C can also easily employ LGBs from high altitude.

You still cannot launch maverick at max missile range because that would require a weapon datalink, IIRC.

The A-10A has no zoom. ;)

Yes, you still need the missile seeker to lock first - unless you have a DL-capable maverick and a DL pod, which I don't think the A-10C can carry right now.

Thanks for the info.

I meaned what`s the FLIR zoom compared to the zoom of the image from the Maverick seeker we have in A-10A.

find out what pod the A-10C uses and you'll know...

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

A2A is only for self defence... It has sidewinders for a reason....

He might be refering to the Mavericks zoom, I think the targetting pod will be a big help as you'll have TI and should have the HOC switch to help locate targets.

A-10C sensors will include the Litening II AT TGP with both CCD and IIR video and AGM/TGM Maverick (CCD and IIR) in both Sensor and Weapon modes.

Great. I was just going to ask which targeting pod will be modelled: Litening or Sniper XR.

Sorry to bring that thread back from the dead but the precise zoom, that the targeting systems of A-10C provide, hasn`t been specified. What`s the zoom compared to Ka-50 and AH-64D?

I know that similar pods give 30x, but I forget what the exact number is for the LITENING.

For FLIR you are looking at 28m/km and 8m/km for DTV.

How much zoom that is, I don't really know. It means at 10km distance, in the DTV you are viewing an 80x80m (assuming a square view) patch of land.

I don't know what sort of magnification that all translates to. It can probably be calculated :P

That`s interesting. The pods (Litening, Sniper) must be much more powerful I guess given their size. I wonder all these video clips from apaches in Iraq, are they from TADS/PNVS or Arrowhead http://www.lockheedmartin.com/products/Arrowhead/index.html?

This A-10C sounds like it is going to be even more realistic than Falcon, in terms of avionics anyways. Can't wait for this to come out. Thank God for companies like ED and Flying Legends.

yeah, and much better looking

Sniper pod best field of view is 1 degree. TADS DTV best field of view is 0.45 degrees, so you get just over twice the zoom power on an AH-64 versus a Sniper pod. LITENING pod also has a max FOV of 1 degree.

The TADS/PNVS and the M-TADS/M-PNVS (Arrowhead) have the same fields of view, just better resolutions on the Arrowhead.

EDIT: Not quite fair comparing Apache DTV to Sniper FLIR... Apache TADS FLIR max FOV is 1.6 degrees, so not as good as Sniper's 1 degree. :)

Interesting read relating to the Sniper Pod and attendant capabilities:

"...In IR black-hot, 2X zoom, area track mode, aircraft 86 naut. mi. away were visible as white spots taking off from LAX runways...."

Kind of don`t quite get those degrees things but 86 miles sounds impressive :lookaround:

Well, if they departed from LAX, one can assume that they were bomber sized, but impressive nonetheless.

Will you be modelling all the systems?
