Black Shark and HOTAS selection.

Recommended Posts

What is generally the preferred top of the line HOTAS setup for DCS: BS players?

The only ones I know of are the Saitek X52 and the Thrustmaster Cougar. What else is there? I know the Logitech G940 and Saitek X65 are on the horizon, but I need something soon ;).

GPU: RTX 4090 - 3,000 MHz core / 12,000 MHz VRAM.

CPU: 7950X3d - 5.2 GHz X3d, 5.8 GHz secondary / MB: ASUS Crosshair X670E Gene / RAM: G.Skill 48GB 6400 MHz

SSD: Intel Optane P5800X - 800GB

VR: Pimax Crystal

CONTROLS: VPC MongoosT-50CM3 Base / VPC Constellation ALPHA Prime Grip / VPC MongoosT-50CM3 Throttle / TM Pendular Rudders

The G940 offers a full package: Stick (with force feedback), throttle + Rudder pedals. All main sensors will be hall-sensors, so they won't wear down as easily as conventional sticks. It also has a split-throttle for games with 2 engines or simply if you want to map 2 functions (e.g. for DCS:BS: One for throttle, one for collective). It also has some additionally rotaries.

It will be available next month.

The X65F so far only exists in some shots, presumably just render-images and they have not been officially announced, yet. Rumors state it will be released before christmas, but considering there is still no official information, I rather doubt that. It will consist of Stick and Throttle, will be force-feedback, hall-sensors and it will probably have tons of buttons and rotaries.

And unlike the X52 it will look again, like it's suited to fly an airplane with it, not the Enterprise.

Another alternative to the hardware you mentioned is the setup from CH-Products. You can choose stick, throttle and rudders separately and (at least for the stick) can choose different variants. The HOTAS is expensive, but the software is very comfortable and supports plain and easy programming as well as complex scripts. The hardware has great longlivety, though it's mostly made from plastics. Support is also great, from the community as well as from the company itself.

The hardware is pretty expensive, though.

I'd wait for that upcoming Logitech, depending on how it seems to pan out. Take a look here:

I have a Cougar, and have replaced the original dodgy pots with Hall effect sensors. This cures the spiking that almost all Cougar owners will have to deal with one day. The other Cougar 'issue', is that it can seem very stiff to some people, and when moving the stick in the diagonal, one has to fight both X and Y springs, which some find reduces their ability to be precise. To this end, I've also added a home made extension (about 20cm), which makes it great. The stick now sits between my legs on a little platform. I also had old CH Pro Pedals, which connect to the Cougar for rudder input, the actual Cougar does not come with any rudder. So, if you're prepared to do some modding, and spend a little more, a Cougar is ok. I can't comment on other sticks. The new Logitech does seems to cover a lot of bases though, hence my earlier comment. Force feedback, two throttles, proper pedals....I'd give that a good look.

For the Black Shark, a stick with force feedback enhances the realism and playability immensely, because the trim will work like in the real thing. the stick will center to where you trim, which is extremely helpful. If the G940 is of good quality (which the first few reviews point to, but i'd w8 for some more), then it is thefinately THE hotas for flying helis, as well as multi-engined aircraft. The microsoft FFB2 is a very high quality sturdy stick as well, but unfortunately it lacks the buttons to be a hotas and it is no longer being sold.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

All main sensors will be hall-sensors,

I think this is only true for the X and Y axis of the stick, but these are the ones that usually have to take the most abuse.

I considered the stick-sensors as "main sensors", but AFAIK the throttles will also be equipped with hall-sensors, as an early preview stated. I don't know if this is true for the retail-version, though.

The plastic that CH uses is industrial grade, so it's not as if it's some sort of flimsy material. After all, CH also makes industrial joysticks and trackballs.

I'm very happy with the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X that I just got.Sticks I have used in the past have been Saitek AV8R,X52,X45.Thrustmaster is at least as good, maybe a bit better than any of the Saiteks,at about half the price of the X52(X52 was about $100 US,I just got the Thrustmater T.Flight for about $45 US.)

The Cougar works great for me and many in the 104th. Its problems are overstated in general. Try it you will like it. The logitech product looks nice and the split throttle and FF is really cool but the software is lacking in terms of the unavailability of any truly advanced programming like the Cougar or the CH is capable of.

IMHO the Cougar or CH is the best choice.
