for you HARDWARE GURU's I offer a challenge....

at some point in the future, DCS (digital combat simulator) will release a flight simulator based on the A-10C aircraft.

currently, i play lockon modern aircombat and DCS Black shark with 2 montiros @ 1680x1050, one monitor on top and one at the bottom, thus making a resolution of 1680x2100.

when DCS does release the A-10C, and with black shark, i want to utilize TWO small 7" LCD VGA displays in a configuration as follows....

[ -----1680 x 1050----- ] (top monitor) 22" LCD

[ -----1680 x 1050----- ] (middle monitor) 22" LCD

[-800x600-][-800x600-] (bottom left) 7" (bottom right) 7"

MY goal, is to have a set up where in Black shark,

[ camera 1 view* ]

[.........................]

[ shkval ][ ABRIS ]

and in the future, if and when the A-10C comes out, monitor setup as follows..

[ camera 1 view* ]

[.........................]

[ MFD #1 ][ MFD #2 ]

* two screens vertically stacked @ 1680x2100 resolution

NOTE: the 7" LCDs will only have VGA inputs.

i hear that the HD5000 series DOES NOT LIKE VGA inputs.

worst case scenario, i can hook up the matrox th2g to operate as dualhead adapter for the two 7" LCDs...

IF SOME ONE CAN TELL ME IF THIS IS POSSIBLE (all on the one HD5850/70), please let me know if i can achieve IT ! (i am opened to hearing options via 2 video cards, though one HD5850/70 is prefered)

thanks ...

Hannibal, keeping in mind that we don 't know yet what DCS:A10C will be able to output, video-wise...

It has been reported that the currently available ATI HD5870 cards (which have 1 Display Port, 2 DVI ports and 1 HDMI port) can only provide output to a 3rd DVI monitor by utilizing an *active* Display Port-to-DVI converter.

I do not know how reliable all of those DVI outputs are for being adapted or VGA. I would think that it would function OK, but I wouldn't make that assumption at this time.

Since you mention the Matrox TH2Go... that would certainly seem to be a means to get those 7" LCDs connected, fed by the Display Port converted to DVI. However, it remains to be seen if DCS:A10C will have the capability to use them that way...

Eventually, the HD5870 Eyefinity6 edition will be available (I'd guess in time for Christmas), which will have 6 mini-Display Port connectors. I have not read anything yet about whether that version will require active adapters to get converted to DVI or VGA.

Since it seems unlikely that all 4 of the video signals you are looking at will be all part of a single view/desktop, a second video card may be a route worth consideration. Assuming the MFD displays would be using separate images from the camera view, they may not need to be using eyefinity. You may be able to use a lesser ATI card to feed the 7" displays.

I'd say at this point that we really need more infomation to get nailed down before you can make informed plans.

Basically, i just would like to know if some one can run the HD5850/70 with

one DVI monitor, one Displayport monitor (or DVI with DP activae adapter) AND a triplehead2go (with 2 or 3 monitors) connected to the second DVI port....

THANK YOU FOR READING..and posting.. and those who can test.. i would appreicate!

I haven't read enough about the HD5850 to comment on it yet. For what you are describing in this question, it looks like the HD5870 should be able to do that if the TH2Go is the digital version. If the TH2Go is the analog version, then you still need to find out if the DVI to VGA converters work OK with the HD5870. I would expect it to work, but I haven't seen anything authoritative about that yet.

If someone can test it, I'd also like to know how it turns out. I'm not that far along yet, but the wealth of information in these forums has certainly helped me avoid some mistakes already.

Hannibal, are you locked in on those 7" monitors being VGA inputs? (As in, you already have them?). If not, have you ruled out using USB monitors for the MFD displays (and if you have ruled them out, I'm curious about why)?

Good luck with it... you're doing some very cool stuff!

i dont know what display bandwidth will be via USB...

i mean, if its feasible, i would consider it using USB 7" LCDs

i just dont have info on how it works with Windows, let alone black shark....LET Alone EYEFINITY....

i prefer a ONE PC with one GPU solution....

at the moment, i am on windows XP x64..

in black shark and lomac,

i am very content with the vertical span of two monitors setup top and bottom.

i can zoom out as far back, with good performance.

best part of it is that i can zoom in the HUD and see my guages...

maybe i will revisit triplehead (3x) 1440x900 if the next gen gfx (HD5800 and GT300) can handle DCS apps zoomed out with out it becoming a slide show...

and also if LO:FC patch 1.13 if this patch can address the rendering issues on triple head. (things like labels werent getting rendered)

we will see
