lets say it like this, if you hear the enemy plane and its not in front of you then you are very close and i would suggest you run... ;-)

sound travel at around 340m a secound if i remember correctly, while your airplane fly faster than that quite often, so lets say it this way sound will always be far behind you, so you can nott hear the other airplane if its not very very close to you. One other reason is that wind and noice from your own aircraft would be louder making it impossible to hear the other plane.

But ofcourse if you were standing on the ground looking at the airplane yes then you could use your ears.... but when the airplane come towards you from behind you will not hear it before its on top of you, but when it past you and are flying away you can hear it for a long time.

Its the same princip when you see an ambulance when it come towards you you will only hear the sound maybe 20 secounds before it pass you... but once it have past you, then you can hear it for maybe 40 - 60 - 80 seconds.

But good questions... 5.1 surround sound ??

Somewhat agreed - 5.1 would be nice for the positional sound thing, but simply overkill for a sim like this. Clicking switches in the cockpit, on the other hand... Bullets ruining your paintjob...

I think you can tweak one of the .cfgs manually to make more events use 3D sound - nearly everything is intentionally SET as 2D, you know.

I do not agree, sounds, as visual is most important for immersion. If you are satisfied with “stereo” then so be it. I’m not…Think of Seven & vista users. Thanks ED, FC2 sound engine upgrade is welcome…

By FC2 sound engine upgrade I believe they will bring it to the same level as DCS. And DCS doesn't have any good sound engine unfortunately. I wished for OpenAL,

There is no need or place for 5.1 sound in flight sims. Have any of you guys ever been in a real running fighter jet, if so speak up and tell us your thoughts. I have had the privilege of being in one and we don't need 5.1 in this sim, it's not a big deal.

I would agree...

It is not FPS shooter where walking sound is important. When you are in cockpit you hear only sounds in cockpit. When you hear another planes (example in formation) 2.0 is enough.

But the sound engine in LO\DCS is bad. Really crap. Even stereo doesn't work good LOL.

I think 5.1 would be excellent. A absolute necessity no, but a great feature that most modern games support. One that increases immersion and that is always a good thing.

There is still some surround sound I believe in Lock On currently, but not all sounds I believe. For example if I drop a bomb, I hear it in front of me and as I pass over it, behind me. If however a friendly flies off to your right 5 o'clock, the sound from his engine is just stereo.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Besides 5.1 is there any surround sound in LO or am I not right about the explosions?

Acording to sound.cfg there are many "sourround" sounds. But generally quality is bad.

If you hear an enemy fighter before you detect it visually or with your sensors, don't worry, it's just the sound of your fighter escort to the elysian fields, because you're already dead. :smilewink:

But seriously, the sound in lockon isn't so much surround sound, as much as it is a fixed set of sounds for a given camera position. Try panning around your aircraft in an external view while you're flying and you'll see what I mean. You'll hear no engine noise in one position, and then you'll move the camera a few inches in another direction and hear the full roar.

Black Shark has the same sound engine as Lockon. FC 2.0 will have a completely new sound engine, which will be implented in to Black Shark later on.

When you flew very low,an enemy Mig-29 passed over you ,the sound would be very important ,it would help you to find the Mig-29 quickly !
