Jocman's Cockpit (will be a long, long work....)

Jocman

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I'm going on with my cockpit plans.

Hopefuly, I'll post here all the work's phases.....

I got the seat (not a real one, a sport car seat, but the feel isn't bad).

Currently I'm building a "demo" version with carton, to realize the effective dimentions (before cutting the steels ones).

So, 'cause I'm getting some difficulties to find the right positions, I wish to ask if someone can suggest me the measures (possibly the real ones) so to place the components as better is possible.

Explanations:

A: Front panel - pilot

B: Top of panel - ground (it's basic to me to understand the pilot's visual range)

C: Seat - rudder pedals

D: Seat's height from ground

Thanks all

I think it's very individual on how you prefer to sit.

Some people want to sit low like in a F1 racer, and some (like me)

a bit more upright. Might be the age that gets me from sitting low :megalol:

For my last project I did try to find a good seating position, but also had the need to fit it a a tight space.

First I was planning for a really dedicated pit, but I had to lower my visions a bit.

One suggestion is to do an quick and easy cad drawing to estimate what you feel as your best individual position. Use googles SketchUp, sketchup.google.com

as it is free and you can download a lot of ready made things like joysticks, seats, monitors which makes it much fatest to work with.

This is some of my initial ideas.

Let me know If you want the cad files and you can work from those.

Genericcockpit3.jpg

Then use some wood to build a rough version that you can alter, or just put your seat on something that can give you an idea of what you want.

One tip is that,

If you increase B and D, then you can decrease A and C.

Well, CoNa, thanks for the suggestions.

I think my "way" is the "F1 style" (by the way, the seat shown in your draws is exactly what I got).

I pop the question, because, after build the front panel (carton) based on real measures (or I hope so), I've realized that:

- if I put the panel vertical on my legs (there are the legs...tunnels), contacting the seat (it means I can easily touch the panel), the top of the panel is right in center of my eyes. It means I don't see nothing (hopefully I'll place my LCD on the top of panel). Moreover, the central sections (where to place the cloche) is in the middle of my legs (not really confortable...)

- I tried to tilt the panel to get a good visual (the top now is on my nose level, fine for the LCD - and nice to see- and reasonable distance to touch it, but still keeping the cloche problem)

Both cases, I realized I don't have place for my legs (the panel is contacting my legs and the seat, so I'm trying to figure out how enter the cockpit)

That reason I asked about some measures: I don't know if my idea is right o wrong: have to possibility to touch the panel. I suppose I must have this possibility (a real pilot has seat bealt, well secured so no big freedom of movement), but in this case no place for legs. If I get place for legs, I can't reach the panel without moving my back from the seat.....

What a mess.......

Thanks guys.

I got all the suggestions you gave me.

Finally, I decided to make maybe the easiest thing: I got the measure of my AUDI. I love this car cockpit: user friendly and confortable.....

Then I'll try to place the front panel and the seat related to those measures.

I'll try....Has to see if I'll get it....

BTW, the Duckling's links rock......

Well, short update...

Designing phase is almost done (99.9 % I suppose, but everytime I check it, I found some little details to fix, or new ideas growing in my brain...)

Seat is done (just the seat belts missing - still don't know how make them - but it will be the last issue).

Hardware is on the way to my home (IO cards and electro components), in few days I should get them...

Next days I hope to start building the panels.

By now I just built a carton preview, to check the measures and plan the structure.

Real ACES II seat belt? it would be great.

But I live in the "old" Europe". By the way can you tell me some details more? Who knows, maybe a solution can be found.

Sorry there are restrictions on selling military surplus out side of the USA. I don't need the hassles

No problem.

Maybe I'll manage to get them next time I'll work with US soldiers (if I knew before, I've spent about 7 months in Camp Bondsteel - a lot of Black hawks, but I never tought about asking for spare parts).....

BTW, there's some website dealing with those stuffs?

Ok guys.

Today I got my OC cards. Just waiting for the electronic components.

I can also officially declare the end of the design phase (but I'm sure I forgot something, but no matter....)

Now I can start with the "making of" phase, hopefully in the next 15 days, just the time to provide the material.

Stay tuned (if you're interesting in my tales....) :pilotfly:

Of course, I'll inform the forum about the making of.

Well, maybe not very daily, but I'll post the news evry time I'll make some relevant step (I think not many people are interesting in: "Well, today I cut the radio panel...." or "today I soldered 50 LEDs").

In my sick mind, I wish to publish a detailed description of the build (pics and docs) on my website; but for that I think I'll wait to full finish the cockpit.

BTW, tomorrow I'll go buying some build material, so hopefully I should have at least the 80% of the build material I need.

Stay tuned, as I think for the middle of april I should start officially the build.

Scud, don't think I'm so far from you: I'm closer than you can think (Südtirol)...

PS: Breacking news: just this early morning, while I was shaving, I realized I forgot to design a panel. Well, it's funny to design with all the shave foam on your face (inspiration is inspiration....), dont'you?

Easter update.

Well, as I have to work this Easter, I decided to begin assemblying some electronics components....

Waiting for the electronics components, I bought a soldering station. Now, as I must wait bout 2 weeks to begin building the panels, and I got the electronics parts, I decided to start with the electronics.

I got my I/O cards, wires, displays, PCBs, LEDs, tin wire ond so on, and, of course, my soldering station. Plugged in the station's plung and...... FXXK, IT DOESN'T WORK AT ALL!!!!!!! And it's Easter time!!! Shops closed !!!!.

Ok....So, at least, let me starting with the modification of some switches. Let disassembly the switch, put a LED inside, now weld..... Weld???? But this freacking soldering station DOESN'T WORK!!!!

Good start, isn't it?

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL, GUYS !!!!

hehe, that is no real fun..but anyway, as you told, meanwhile you have all the needs to start the building, maybee you have a friend with a soldering station,..ask him if he ll share it to you!)

sometimes it is better to have some latencies, cause you can find some new inspirations on the whole process..

i try to prevent this real bad situation by synchronizing my projects USB stick with data from Laptop and Dektop computer @ home.

anyway, you have to wait for your new adapter. maybe they can deliever it some earlier then 15 days. i think 2-3 days should be possible actually!)

best wishes for you

Well, no wife, girlfriend neither (I'm an happy (?) single). Someone else hates me....but who???

About getting the plans, is not a problem (today i disassembled my laptop and connected the HD to my desktop monster. The problem is the softwares I use to work on the plans.

I'll wait...I ordered the adapter from UK, as my laptop use a not convencional plug to work (HP pavillion Z8000 series).

I'll take some rest..

If you use your Laptop as a main PC the adapter sometimes just burns out from being over used, same for batteries. I've had that happen to me on a couple occasions.

Rest isn't bad anyways!

YEP, that's right. I'm currently using my laptop as "dayly" PC, as th desktop is JUST to run my sims.

I was thinking that use the adapter so long time could be "dangerous", but I don't understand why: desktop PCs use also an adapter. Ok maybe bigger, but always an adapter.

BTW, I'm thinking about build (or buy) a standing alone stabilized adapter, so to use it firstly with my laptop (this one, or the next one); hopefully, I should bypass the "too much use" problem.

Actually, I'm using my netbook to kepp in touch with the world, but it's not so powerfull to let me work....

Taking some rest (anyway, I've been eye lasered 3 days ago - both eyes, so I cannot really see anything - well, I DON'T see anything, at least for the next 2 days - It's very hard to write on the net....)
