This is Spinal Tap’s F-15 Tachometer

Recommended Posts

It goes all the way up to 11! (110%). But, even with afterburner on full, mine is at 100%. What is the extra 10% for? (apologies for low rez pic)

I assumed that either my throttle wasn’t set up with the full range or that it is a margin for over-RPM, for instance if diving steeply with full afterburners, making the fans turn even more quickly with the sheer volume of air.

Or it is actually a McDonnell Douglas / Spinal Tap joke.

In RL, jet engines have a range of RPM and they depend on several ambient factors. Air pressure, temperature, etc will affect RPM. The PW-220 maximum RPM is 110, but on Hot days and high altitude airports it might be as height as 104 or more at mil power. The same goes for many other engine parameters like Fuel Flow and nozzle position. You don't have a set number at idle for example, you have a range were RPM should be at idle. that is why you have the extra 10% and the red border around that part of the gauge.

Douh!

I'm getting confused. GE is the one that have 110% gauge PW uses the 100% gauge. AT least on F-16, GE are so much better

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Well, remember that the afterburner is an after-burner. It's not strictly about making your fan blades spin faster (though my meter does go to roughly 104% with full AB). What's your mod situation? Have any curve or saturation changes to your throttle axis?

That one thing I never liked about sims. AB will not change your RPM

Why should AB change your RPM ? In most installations (that I am aware of) all you will see is maybe a minor RPM fluctuation on AB light off.... Unless you are in Jaguar which has has a pilot selectable feature called "Part Throttle Reheat". With this turned on you get AB and RPM modulation.

I think he meant that the thing he dislikes with sims is that IRL the AB won't change fan RPM and the simulators get this wrong.

Anyway, I'm trying to understand the original post. Is he having problems with his throttle or is he wondering why the RPM goes to 110%?

I'm rather confuse myself. In the F16 RPM gauges for PW only go to 100%, all photos of the F-15 I can find the RPM gauge goes to 110% I wonder if this is related to the engine intake and how air flow thru them or maybe is the RPM of older engine like the F100-PW-200

I am running a couple of mods, (new f-15 cockpit and 6dof), but it looks like it's not supposed to go up to 110% from what you guys are saying, (I was thinking of the WEP in IL2 there).

I have watched tutorial vids on various F-15 / LOMAC topics and they all go to 100% when at full throttle IIRC.

My Cougar throttle shows full range as far as I can make out.

Yes, just confused as to why it goes to 110% if all i can get out of it is 100%. My thoughts being, "i want that extra 10% if it’s somehow available"

Although, that again, is confusing fan RPM with POWER. The first is simple a measurement normalised into a % value.

I do not think it is available in the game. Gauge is probably imitating Real cockpit, so it show 110%, completely guessing tho

[iNNER MATHS NERD MODE]

If a normal gauge went up to ten then, when at full, as a percentage it would be 100%, therefore if it went "up to 11”, then that would be 110%, (of the original "10" maximum), or what you see on the F-15 Tachometer.

:smartass:

[/iNNER MATHS NERD MODE]

ps. Or something.

pps. Now you have got me attempting to justify a correlation between Spinal Tap logic and Flight simulation! Mind you,"THRUSTMASTER HOTAS". Nudge nudge :smilewink::smilewink:
