I am building a new computer, and am looking for a good graphics card for these two games.

I was going to get the build with a 5850 off newegg, but the combo deal is out of stock and any other 5850 cards would put it over budget, which is $1000 (U.S. Dollars)

Here's the build:

Phenom ii x4 955 BE

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808

650 watt Power supply and HAF 922 case

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.422458

DVD Drive

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135211

HDD

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181&cm_re=Samsung_500_gb-_-22-152-181-_-Product

TrackIR 5 (included in price)

http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/products/trackir5/

Mobo and memory

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.424747

all in all, $759.92, leaving $240.08 for the graphics card

So, i was looking at either a HD 5830 or a pair of 9800 GTX+ cards.

I was looking at this 9800 card:

Thanks, any help appreciated! Feel free to comment on the build, its my first one.

A 4870 provides almost the same bandwidth as a 5850. It is enough for me. Find a 4870 1 gb ram Dark Knight new or used if you want to save big money!

I like the dx11 support of the 5830 though. Three Questions:

1. Will the 4870 or 4890 run DCS:BS and LOMAC on max settings with a decent frame rate

2. Will the 5830 outperform the 4870 or 4890 and will that also run both games on max settings smoothly

3. And what about the 9800 card(s)? Will those run the games on max settings?

keep in mind i call smooth gameplay 30+ fps

From what I've read so far Lockon is CPU dependant.

I recommend you to get higher CPU with higher clock.

As for VGA, I think 250 GT or any ATI equivalent should be enough

I went from 3850 to 5770.

I was considering 5850, 5830 and 4890 too.

4890 cost some 20% more but was bigger energy consumer. Since I have 450VX it could be an issue for me (bcs of OC).

5830 was too much inferior in regard to 5850. It cost almost same as 5850 at that time. Latter, 5850 got on price bcs Fermi showed nothing. I didn't like their price/performance ratio.

I bought 5770 and could say it worths as much as 3850 worthed to me. I payed 3850 mcuh less than I had to pay for 3870 and OCed it to 3870 clocks easily. Later I did Vmod and it worked some 2-3 years @ 920.

Now, I've got MSI Hawk and it is software vmoded and OCed to 1000/1350 @ 1.275V for 24/7. I think it has stock 4890 performance with this clocks.

So, you could consider 5770 if you want to upgrade your GC bcs it has ok price/performance ratio and it draws little current.

Off course, you could consult some review site's such as techpowerup or xbit for more info :)

those greed goblin 460's are blistering fast and are $200 so I'd snatch one of those up before their price shoot's through the roof.

Okay, i put together a new build cos the old combo deals got scrapped. Also, i managed to save $100 more, making my budget $1100. So, i decided to go with the sapphire vapor x hd 5850 1 gb. Anyone have experience with the 5850 cards? Will they run the game smoothly? Thanks in advance.

Hehe, will they run game smoothly? what a funny question, may i ask you of what game are you thinking?

I have a 280GTX from EVGA and extremely happy with it. I get great frame rates and never see any stuttering until I start recording video in real time with FRAPS.

I used to have a 9800GX2 from EVGA which is essentially two 9800 GTX cards in one package SLI'd internally. My single 280GTX out performs the 9800GX2. So instead of getting two 9800GTX's, I recommened stepping up a line to the 200 series GTX cards. They are pretty cheap these days.

I also recommend buying directly from EVGA. My 9800GX2 died on me (small possibility that it was my fault...) and when I contacted EVGA, they said they would replace it even though my warantee had expired a month before. Since they didn't have any 9800GX2's, they upgraded me to the 280GTX for free. I was very happy with their customer service and will buy my stuff from them until that changes.

my 5770 is running verry good, both sims, dcs and fc2 with minimum 30 fps(after readjust cpu freq to 3999 mhz!)

easily overclocking capabilitie to 900+mhz.. for me it was a good buy..same for FSX, resulting in better image quality and frames in every situation..

Another thing to think about when buying a video card is what mother board and CPU you have. Some hardware just runs better together. I was an ATI fan for many years. The last few computers I've built I went with NVidia though. At the time I switched NVidia had much better cards. Then ATI balanced it back out. I haven't paid much attention since I got the 9800GX2 a few years ago to know which one is on top now.
