Hey Simmers,

My squad, 16th ACCW Flying Tigers, is having some great success with night attacks. We were flying the Dogs of War, Anapa Overrun mission. I did modify it by adding some A-10s just so the fix winged guys can have some fun. I also added some AH-1Ws so I could fly it alone. They do minimal damage.

There were four of us in there last night and we are starting to really advance in our crew coordination tactics. We are tracking each others remaining weapons inventories, planning flare deployment, and rearming, staggered, at the FARP so we are not left Winchester at the same time. So far it is working well. Last night we set up in a pincer formation and attacked targets from two sides. I experimented with locating targets, launching illumination flares, getting the airplane steady, getting a valid laser lock and destroying targets. I was surprised at how smooth this works. I am gaining more confidence that the Ka-50 can be a great night attack platform.

Just wanted to share this. I have read some negative things on the lack of night capabilities concerning the Ka-50. It does require some work and serious coordination but it can be done.

another great tip is to take in your flight bag a big bag of carrots.

Either that or break into a US airbase and steal there NVG glasses instead, just remember to put spare batteries in your pocket :)

During ww2 a pilot by the name of John "Cats eyes" Cunningham was made famous by his telling people that he could find the enemy in the dark by eating carrots by the bag.

It later transpired that the Mosquito NF11 he flew was equiped with the first top secret radar set. The story stuck and several bomber crews where instructed to tell the Germans upon capture that they where force fed carrots. :D

wow,great

i prefer just simply use NVG if alone

of course better with flares+smoke if i have teammates

but...KA50 is not originally designed for night missions....

its pretty hard to find hostiles without pre-op brief in daytime, not to say at night...

really want a millimeter-wave radar onboard lol........

Great point. I would like to think that no night sortie would go out without a good brief and good intel. On my missions I turn on all the icons. I know that it is "cheating" but if we had a AF style AWACS there would be no need to. I compare it to having JSTARS. JSTARS can give a strike group good SA. With that it isn't so much the F10 view but the info on the ABRIS. It just makes the sim much more fun to have somewhat of an idea of where the bad guys are for coordination attacks. We will, however, send out a pilot for a recon if we can't locate targets. They usually end up hauling a$$ back trying to dodge a missile or two. All you hear on comms is, Oh, $hit, missiles inbound. Can anyone see them? Stay low guys!", etc. If they get hit they will receive some good banter.

In our Squad we concentrate on the coordinated missions rather than red vs. blue. We will fly and design force on force but we prefer coordinated tactics.

Since you are using illumination flares, do you take the helmet mounted sight with you instead of the night vision helmet?

I find I'm so used to using HMS that I can't target very well at night without it, but it's hard to see without night vision..

I adjust my NVG so it is darker. If I am in a target area I can secure my NVGs and adjust my shkval so it basically looks like shadows. Once the flare candle is ignited I can see just fine. It is way too bright with NVGs when a flare goes off. I don't think there is a perfect way to adjust all the lighting but when you find the combination that works for you get ready for some intense tactical flying.
