bumfire Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 (edited) Sadly, I doubt that it would ever stand as a record, even if it was timed in an official capacity, simply because it has a pusher prop at the back of it, thus isnt a true helicopter. I think it fits into the Hybrid Class of Aircraft, thus cannot call its self a true helicopter or plane, all due to the pusher prop at the back of it, so the media claims of X2 breaks the Helicopter speed Record is like saying a P-51 breaks the Helicopter speed record, its still impressive though. Now, I could be wrong and no doubt if I am someone here will point it out to me, but any records it does set will not be official records and will not hold any merit in the pure helicopter arena. Take off the prop at the end and its a totally different story, but even then, it still gets beat by another hybrid helo or two, I think the fastest Hybrid helo ever was this one, and man does it look mean, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-72 or was it this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-69 Edited August 4, 2010 by bumfire
Heli Shed Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 The fastest helicopter in the world is a variant of the AH7 Lynx. The specific variant was designed specifically to set the record. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynx_AH7 IMHO I'd like to see a Merlin (EH101 variant) go head to head with a Lynx, although the new 'Wildcat' coming out soon to support us in afghanistan, is one mean, quick MOFO! Fly safe all 'T' Come pay us a visit on YouTube - search for HELI SHED
KungFuCharlie Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 A helicopter is defined as any aircraft that derives its lift from blades that rotate about an approximately vertical central axis. Pusher prop or not, it's a helicopter. Which begs the question... if someone sticks a jet engine out the back of a Huey and lights that sucker up... :D
bumfire Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 (edited) Its a hybrid helicopter, since it has the pusher prop. Hybrid types are types that combine features of helicopters and fixed wing designs, V22 Osprey being one, any record they set will not be pure Helicopter records and will not break the existing world helicopter speed record set by G-LYNX many many years ago. This Sikorsky X2 flew 249 mph, that's roughly 400 kmh. You say you were flying at more than that in Shark ? You mean like 80-100 kmh more than the Shark's comfort zone ? ...well someone has to move the mud!!!
bumfire Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 (edited) I cant recall exactly, but I think someone posted a youtube video of the KA50 in dcs hitting near enough 500KPH. Probably with "Immortal" enabled. Edited August 13, 2010 by bumfire
davek1979 Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Just watched the video. Yes it seems damage model has been slightly adjusted :-) As a part-time flyer, I've tried very weird things in the past with the Shark with disastrous consequences so now I'm pretty prone to slow down when the beeper starts convincing me. So those numbers above don't seem to be too real to me. ...well someone has to move the mud!!!
bumfire Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Yea, I personally think Immortal was enabled, but the video said it wasnt and the reason the helo didnt crash and burn was because it had hardly any fuel and no weapons, but even that wouldnt stop the blades from colliding I dont think ? I havent tried to copy the video, but I have did power dives in the shark and normally it ends badly once I get above 360kph.

The X2 is classified as a co-axial helicopter and not a hybrid helicopter. The term hybrid helicopter is not "official" as of yet. But it is very well possible that the X2 will end up in that category... it just isn't right now.
EtherealN Posted August 13, 2010 Posted August 13, 2010 Regarding the fast dives with the Ka-50 in DCS:BS, I believe it was made possible by exploiting a hole in modeling of the blades entering transonic and supersonic regimes at the tips. Obviously, a real-life Ka-50 won't fare as well. Regarding the question about strapping a jet engine to the back á la Airwolf, this doesn't really work since you'll still have to tackle the issue of blades entering the supersonic. It can help to bump up your speeds slightly, but not enough to be practical. It can help to bump up your speeds slightly, but not enough to be practical. You're absolutely correct but I was speaking more from a classification standpoint. To answer it from a classification standpoint, with a jet engine on a helo to get any real speed youd have to fold back the blades and let the helo body become the lift mechanism (wing) thus making it a "hybrid helo" as bumfire brought up.
davek1979 Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Yes and let's go completely mad and fold the rotor to the front and let it be a propeller like Osprey! Maaan! And maybe the side wings could extend and maybe even change geometry. And there could be extendable ailerons and man, what to add on top of that ? Sky's the limit when you're building a Transformer! ...well someone has to move the mud!!!
Weta43 Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 Someone at Sikorsky's been trolling through old Russian documents (or the DCS manual:-) Looks like a mix of the V-80 and V-100 Kamov concepts put forward in the 80's Cheers.
