If you mean are they individual realtime lightsources then no, i don't think they are, however the way they're done is quite effective and hardware friendly, i don't think i've ever seen an FPS drop with them. I like where this is going... still needs some improvement (the incandescent part of the explosion and the flames aren't nearly bright and luminous enough), but it's already a big improvement on the previous effects - the potential is obvious!
