FC 2 Smoke

Recommended Posts

For some coming movie projects, im trying to change some settings in FC2, to make the smoke look smoother and the smoke trail longer. Taking a look into countless files, that include the name 'smoke' or 'dym'(smoke in russia), didnt help much. Deleting all those files hadnt even a slight effect on the smoke.

What i want to change:

I think, the smoke thickness is dependent on your fps per second. The more fps you have, the thicker will the smoke be. Imagen the smoke as little objects. One object will spawn every on new frame. The more frames, the more objects.

For movie making, to have a smoother recording with more FPS, i slow down the game speed to 0.5 (1/2 speed). So if i record with 25 FPS and speed up the video, i get twice as FPS(50 FPS).

As example, i shot these screenshots, showing very clearly the change(and problem) in the smoke:

Game speed is 1.0, FPS are locked to 25, that means in real time, i watched this loop with 25 FPS.

Game speed is 0.5, FPS are locked to 25, that means in real time, i watched this loop with 50 FPS.

To put that into one sentense,

the more fps in a certain timezone, the more smoke particles will spawn.

Here, very clearly visible. The smoke is getting thicker, because with 1/2 speed you have a lot fps on a certain timezone. All these smoke particles spawn twice as fast as normal out of the generator, that srews up the smoke.

The aircrafts speed also is fault of the smoke thickness. At a stable fps rate, the you have more space between the smoke particles, if you fly fast. Compared, if you fly slow, the smoke particles are a lot closer to eachother.

That makes the smoke trail shorther and thicker. Shorter, because there is only a certain number of smoke particles per smoke generator aviable.

To make the smoke look better, i want to change(if that is anyhow possible) the number of smoke particles, that spawn on every new frame.

Im out of ideas, how to manipulate the smoke in FC2. If someone can help me out, im looking forward to every reply. :)

Maybe have a look at the smoke trail mod

http://files.lockon.ru/en/128/?sphrase_id=19412

Maybe there are files in the CDDS that will give you some hints.

Will take a look into it. Thanks for the info.

EDIT: Just checked the mod. There are only 3 .TGA files. No possible to change something, that for my use.

Thanks anyway.

But why during VFAT nobody has problem with lenght of the smoke? kind of well known complicated ED mechanism.

Livestream is working fine, because its running real time with 25 fps. :music_whistling:

Though, thats not enough for movie making.

try to ask Blaze, Patriots have their smoke changed from basement so maybe he can help you (help us, all aerobatic fans)

We're as clueless when it comes to this as any other aerobatic teams. For us, this is just another one of those potentially nifty modding features that has been abandoned and assumed to be another hard-coded feature.

If you want to know the truth, it's probably just as simple as modifying a shader file, but I don't know the first thing about shader language, especially when it comes to animated particles.

...and unfortunately, that toilet tissue smoke effect still resides in DCS A-10C, check latest video

at 01:23 with the AGM-65H smoke, and with some smokestack at 02:30.

Fortunately though, everything else in DCS A-10C rocks :D

Check out at 5:50 the smoke from burning vehicles is white and check out at 6:00 the same smoke is blackish.

Hi all,

I have that darn toilet paper bug as well...in my old Lockon there it works fine. Anyone any idea how to work around that? or do we just have to live with it? Thanks for any advice. If you zoome-in or out the 2D-Smoke becomes volumeric. Any way to change the LOD Level of the smoke?

Thanks for any replys :)

have fun and fly save
