<51>Dedicated GCI Weekend!

Thanks Case! If I understand correctly, it gives contact information to the operator based on a ground based radar? Thats fantastic. I had assumed that it was showing everything and an element of "playing along" was required on the part of the operator. Either way, flying on the server last night was absolutely amazing! Would recommend anyone who gets a chance jump on and try it.

Unfortunately we had some serious issues with the GCI software today. The GCI interface had trouble reading one of the missions and after trying to address the issue once, the server still had issues. We decided to put up an older mission instead.

Apologize to all who took their time to show up, but at least we got 2.5 days of problem-free GCI :)

This should have been explained in the mission description, I saw it in the mission name, but it wasn't mentioned anywhere else. I was on too early. If I had known what it was, I would have postponed flying until later.

I guess I might try tonight though. Good job guys, the 51st server is really great. And I fixed my issue with the clouds too so I'll be on a lot more when I have time.

this GCI weekend shows that there is soo much fun and real environment possible with our FC2.0, that the flyts without GCI and advanced comms with the ATC/GCI (what I really like) on the daily server is just boring now lol...

sadly not all players join on comms (maybe scared to talk I dont know), and some "gamers" fly around block runways etc...but I guess we have to live with that...

overall, friday and saturday (I had no time on sunday), worked out well little FPS issues when the arty shoots constantly, and I guess some map settings are on "high scene" I guess, maybe it is better to turn the server setting to "low" if you guys expect soo many players and there are been 40+ players, plus the GCI tool in the background too.

anyway, I look forward for the next GCI weekend, and thx Breakshot again for the control on BLUE, I am sure we can have a 104th as a ATC/GCI controller next time, that you can fly too hehe!

cheers

Actually we are considering to have it at least once a month, just as we do with our 80s week. We will announce in advance as usual of course.

The only possible issue would be the need for a minimum of 2 GCI controllers present, so that we can provide constant coverage for both BLUE and RED, especially since 51st is already stretched thin with many ongoing duties/projects, and we do want to fly too :)

So, I strongly advice squads to consider bringing their GCI/ATC controllers for this event if they can! They can always ask me how to get all the necessary software installed and configured, just PM me or drop in on forum.51st.org for any questions. Remember, we will not be limited to 1 controller per side, so even if there is a language barrier or heavy traffic we can have more controllers assigned for each side and so forth. Also this type of duty can be very demanding and ideally a controller would need to be relieved by another shift after 2 or so hours not to loose his voice... hehe

@104th - I do hope you guys get a GCI controller in for the next one, especially since Georgian Incident will use the GCI as we did in CI, which would mean invaluable practice for BLUEFOR and also to get all the software issues ironed out before hand. PM me if you got any questions/ideas etc.

I must say of the whole weekend I found the short-lived heavy overcast 80's mission to be the most fun with GCI. I hope that setup gets ran again in the future

Me too! We will have to test it again for stability issues however. I noticed some pilots had frequent CTDs in overcast, while my game and some others for example ran perfectly with no issues... so there could be some system related problems there... But I do agree, overcast with GCI is really neat! :)

The software is LotATC V3.0.0

The attachment shows what the GCI can see. Yellow contacts are on his coalition, red contacts are enemy.

I see no helicopters on the picture. Normaly in this mission (Bridge over the river Inguri) there are always 2 or more ka-50-helicopters flying.

I asked because i saw a ka-50-guy at the GCI-weekend that killed 12 fixed-wing players (3 A-10A, 5 MIG-29G, 3 F-15C) in one(!) session.

The poor guys which were shot down were /his Air-to-Air kills ..

(;

Logdetails from the session here:

http://www.51st.org/stats/eventlog.php?pilot=Wildman%205-1&starttime=2011-02-20%2020:17:05&endtime=2011-02-20%2023:23:38 )

He infiltrated the airport Sochi-Adler with his ka-50 and had a field day.

He has extraordinary flying skills thats for sure (i saw him also yesterday with an fantastic auto-rotation maneuver). But later i found that he is cheating.

He is cheating with a different tree-layout than the original one or a normal one. For him trees are not present (or the tree-population is thinned out or whatever). He dont need to pop up when engaging targets through trees, he can see and shoot targets through trees.

But back to GCI-weekend: can the GCI-Controller also recognizes helicopters on his traffic-controll-screen or only fast-flying fixed-wing-aircrafts?

Choppers do show up on the GCI screen, however usually they are hard to track consistently because of radar coverage limitations and ground clutter, etc etc. Remember that the GCI only sees what his side's ground radars can see, so he has limits on his coverage and of course terrain plays a big part too...

But once the choppers show up, they cant go far so its fairly easy to vector fighters in to take them out.... :joystick: Ive done that a number of times while on GCI station for BLUEFOR. Must have caused close to 5-10 kills on REDFOR choppers as a result of guiding fighters and even bombers on top of them. Poor buggers didnt even know what hit them...:megalol:

I also loved the GCI weekend. Flying the Su-25t all the time, and the added GCI makes you so much aware off all the things going on around you.

Also makes it feel more "real".

A flight of me looked about like this:

- Taking off

- Get an anchor location assigned around friendly SAM units until your escort is arriving

-Fly to the tatget area with the escort in the neighborhood

-Anchor again while escort is is clearing a path

-ingress further and attack ground units.

-Getting constant updates of enemy and friendly fighters.

-Being assigned a task to take out some choppers (didn't succeed)

-Get the hell out of combat area because enemey fighters are breaking through.

- RTB with fighter coverage.

- Land for fuel weapons and clean underwear :)

Reminded me of a story written in F-16.net, dont know if its true.

It was about a pilot flying over turkey in a long range flight, who had eventually received the appeal from nature.

So he fetched the urine tube, to strap it on but it got around the stick and was short of reaching the suit, so the pilot pulled it and the plane rolled over several times before he decided to eject.

what a nice fresh sensation that must have been. :D
