Blown Away by Realism

Teriander

Recommended Posts

I never heard of this game till this passed weekend when I saw it on Steam. Bought it because I haven't played a flight sim in a LONG time. This game was WAY better than I expected.

I must have spent 10 hrs alone on Training Missions and Free Flying Missions just to learn how everything works and I just now feel comfortable blowing things up. This game brings realism to another level and I haven't even learned everything it can do yet. On top of that the graphics are awesome! I look forward to my wife giving birth next month so I can stay home and take care of her, while at the same time dropping Guided Bombs from 20k feet. Thanks Eagle Dynamics!

Welcome Teriander,

You will find a very helpfull and knowledgeable community here that are always forthcoming if you have any questions.

Congrats on the child coming soon. You will experience a huge loss of time for anything but diapers and comforting a very dissatisfied child.

I have a son that is now 1½ years old, he means the world to me and he loves to sit with me at my pc and play with my HOTAS Warthog or see me flying.

1st child? If so, just a teeny little heads up - you will not have nearly as much free time as you think you will :) Nothing kills hobbies like children, darlings though they are....congrats and welcome though!

Hey Thanks everyone!

MTFDarkEagle, yes. I've already found that searching the forums has answered a lot of questions I had, thanks for the heads up!

jeffyd123, I think my wife would throw my computer out the window if I told her we need to give our child up for adoption so I can spend time flying. :)

QFT! I used to be into sims big time. Can't even tell you total hours logged in between Longbow / Longbow 2, F-15, F/A-18, Falcon 4, IL-2, defintely hundreds and hundreds, maybe even over a thousand. Now I have two little guys and I play mainly FPS and RTS games because I can get in and out in a heartbeat.

That being said, I am going to find time for this sim since it's been so long since I've delved into this world. I've found that you make time for things that keep you sane, and enjoy most. :D

Although I play mainly on my laptop, and don't have room for my full CH Products HOTAS setup, so am going to have to settle for a throttle stick. :joystick: :doh:

Either way won't miss the chance to fly my favorite bird!

OP,

Welcome to The Addiction.

I haven't been able to play anything else since picking up DCS:A-10C.

RigorMortis,

Longbow / Longbow 2 was the shiite back in the day, especially MP where you could buddy up with a friend and play pilot or weapons officer. I really miss that.

Intel Core I7 2600K, DP67BG Motherboard, 12GB Ram, MSI GTX460, Saitek PRO Flight X-65F, Dual 1080P Monitors

Flight Sims:

* DCS: Ka-50 Blackshark

* Lock On Platinum

* Rise of Flight

* Enemy Engaged - RAH66 Comanche Vs KA-52 Hokum

I do too. That was awesome, nothing ever like it that I can recall. Would be marvelous for DCS to do their own "sequel" to Longbow. :D. Matt Wagner was part of that wasn't he?

Anyhow, I look forward to getting my hands and feet dirty again. It'll be like it's new all over again since it's been a solid three years at least since I touched Falcon 4.

X-52 can be mapped for every HOTAS function that the A-10C has, plus some more, and costs $100 last I checked (edit: Wait! Amazon supposedly has them for like $83: http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-Control-System/dp/B00030GSJY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303754246&sr=8-1 )

I second that, you'll soon find you're staying up late just to catch a couple of hours flight time, then knackered the following morning when your little'un wakes you up at 6.30. :bye_3:

Sorry to spoil your day

Thanks for that. I was actually considering the Thrustmaster T-flight for about $50.

But maybe I'll look at the X-52 as well.

I just have to consider cheap in case my kids get ahold of it and break it. But if it won't be sufficient for A-10 then not worth buying.

I second the remark about the X-52. I have the entire A-10C HOTAS on my X-52 in a single mode, no switching required.

Still had enough buttons left over to have every view I wanted, pause, time acceleration/deceleration, and toggling labels all in mode 1. Pretty snazzy for the price if you ask me!

I do use mode 2 for communications just so I never have to use the keyboard for a thing. I can actually use the mic switch in mode 1 if I want to, and even a handful of the function buttons, but fitting the full F1-F12 keys in there took its own mode.

Hmmm, maybe I'll spring for the X-52 then. I wanted to go cheap, but maybe not a good idea. I have heard of those Saitek's losing center calibration over time and becoming quite sloppy. But it seems to get favorable reviews.

Mine still works after 5 years. Only issues are that one of the rotaries (which I don't really use anyway) goes quirky, and sometimes if the connector between the stick and the throttle gets loose it will blue-screen the computer (this is rare since I hold the connections firmly in place with duck tape).

That other thing you linked, that T flight or whatever, looks to be wholey inadequate due to the lack of buttons and hats. You need hats, hats, and more hats with any modern combat flight sim. The X-52 actually four of them if you convert the mouse-slew thingy into a hat using bands. I use that for my boat switch and mic switch. Considering the pinky shift function, then those four hats become eight hats.
