Got the sim and I'm loving it. One problem though - navigation. In the navigation training, the instructor tells me to set the HSI course to 270 because the flight plan calls for a heading of 270 for the waypoint. The question I have is - where does this figure of 270 come from? It's not on the hud, it's not displayed on the CDU, and the HSI has no reference to this direction.

I've watched a youtube video that was made with a different version. Within the video, the instructor tells the pilot to enter the CDU Flight Plan and get the waypoint attributes. In the training for the version I've got (1.1.0.7), he doesn't do this.

I believe the steerpoint page gives you course information, you can access this page easily on the UFC by pressing the FUNC key and then the 0 key. I nearly always fly with the CDU repeater on this page.

So it does. Thanks for that Sinky, it's been driving me nuts for most of the afternoon. Just had another go and I can navigate extactly down the route for waypoint 4 - easy when you know how!! In my defence, I'm following the instructions to not start mashing buttons and throwing switches. I'm sure I'll start to experiment a little once I've got the basics nailed down. Talking of which, it's time to try my luck at landing.

Also, I wouldn't bother dialing in the course on the HSI. You can do it by eye with practice.

Say the needle pointing to the steerpoint is pointing at 240 and the course you need is 270, just fly left of the needle till it's pointing at the course you want. If you want to push the needle clock wise you fly left of it and if you want to push it anti-clockwise you fly to the right of it.

If any of that didn't make sense I can try and explain in pictures if you like. It's extremely handy for lining up attack bearings, saves you messing around with the HSI.

To further your defense, there was originally instruction on accessing this information, but the system still had some bugs at release, so it was removed at the time. We will try to add it in the next patch.

That's good to hear.

No need for pictures, I understand what it is your describing. I'll give it a go and see how I get on. I've tried the landing training. Not going too bad, I only got wet twice, only tried three times, last attempt was punctured tyres and all sorts of aerobatics on the airfield. Fun init!!

Good luck with the landings, never stops being challenging in the A-10C. Should have seen mine and Cibit's dodgy landings in multiplayer yesterday, moderate crosswind across the runway but that wasn't the challenging part. The severe turbulence when on final was, suddenly loosing 50 feet and gaining it again. Popped tires all round I think it was.

When I was learning to fly my instructor told me to "push the head, pull the tail" Its exactly what you've described but in a handy little ditty to remember. Flying towards the needle tracking point puts the head of the needle near the top of the instrument. To move it left, fly right of it and "push the head (of the needle)" onto the desired course. Flying away from the needle tracking point puts the tail near the top of the instrument. To move it left, fly left of it and "pull the tail" onto the desired course. Handy if you need to track out from a target on a specific radial or course from it.

"Push the head, Pull the tail" - Also works in the bedroom... wish my girlfriend would take my advice though. :director:

I thought there might be a name for it, I never got that far into my flight training. Welcome to the forum btw.
